Big BIG thank you to @sailorsoapbox I borrowed the very high resolution screencaps from their website - sailorsoapbox.com - a wonderful independently run fansite by another long time fan of Sailor Moon. Romantic Winter Collection
Brand new collection of handmade jewelry now aviable
I’ve been patiently waiting for a nice second-hand wood dresser to appear on fb marketplace or at Goodwill for months. Finally, I grabbed this one yesterday for $50.
My inspiration for this project are some dressers I saw at Anthropology that have gorgeous carved details. But I want my dresser to cost $200 or less rather than $2,000.
Of course I can’t add actual hand-carved wood, but I’ve got clay and some silicon molds + epoxy and a potential overconfidence in my DIY abilities.
First up, I removed the existing hardware and sanded this pretty lady down. She is now looking MUCH better without all those terrible stains (and the drawer pulls weren’t doing it for her, tbh).
Up next, I’ll give her a paint wash or three and start trying my hand at faking some carvings!
She’s paint-washed and looking dandy. I’ll give her a light sand tomorrow and get to work on some fake carvings!
So I actually ended up glazing her first to bring the wood grain back out a bit and add some depth to the color. The glaze was very finicky to work with, but did exactly what I wanted it to (a comparison of glazed vs unglazed drawers in the first pic). I have several silicon molds filled with drying resin and I will begin experimenting with “carvings” tomorrow!
Oh yeah. This is gunna work just fine. BRB. Making and then painting c. 100 flowers and vines.
She's coming along great! I’m going to wrap the foliage around the side up top and then start working on the bottom right bit.
Alas, I ran out of flowers/vines so I will need to get more epoxy this weekend to finish the bottom corner. Shes so close to being done, though! The next update will be the last once I seal her and get the new hardware added. :)
She’s DONE. Cost breakdown: $50 dresser, $30 molds, $35 epoxy, $6 paint, $8 glaze, and $4 drawer pulls. Total: $133.
I surprised even myself with this one and am so delighted by the outcome. I’ve been using her for a week and dusted her once (with the amount of seal I used, a fluffy swifter duster glides along all the finicky crevices just fine) and she seems sturdy. Time will tell! Thanks for all the kind words on this fun little journey.
good god theyre giving the weevils adderall
We are still going through The Horrors. We're now on month three of my husband being unemployed. He is doing everything in his power to find a job, but...no luck thus far. I'm disabled and can't work. My beloved cat SpyBoy has been very ill. He has diabetes that we are still trying to get under control. We finally have all of the vet bills up to date, but Spy Guy is going to have to have another overnight visit next month for monitoring, to see if his insulin needs to be adjusted. The mortgage is due on the first, along with some other bills. I have no idea how to pay for any of this. We have a gofundme: https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-spy-boy-urgent-medical-funds-needed SpyBoy has a wishlist for food and needed supplies: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/BK56PZUL2A76?ref_=wl_share I'm selling my signed, rare, and collectible books: https://www.ebay.com/usr/gwynpins I am a published poet. We really need help, my friends. Please reblog, and spread the word!
I've added a lot more wonderful books to my ebay store! Uncorrected proofs, rare and out of print editions, signed books...Mostly fantasy/sci fi. I can’t draw very well and hated that I couldn’t draw my DnD character, a tabaxi cleric named Merry Thing, but then I remembered I’m pretty good with a needle and thread so I made her
All made by hand, hand embroidered details, and I even crocheted the lace trim on her shift!
Update: I made Thing’s twin brother, Cheeky Night! Cheeky is my favorite npc in the campaign and I couldn’t have a Thing without him. He’s an absolute bastard of a man but I love him so much. The belt he’s wearing I wove by hand with embroidery floss, and the designs on his vest are symbolic to the campaign and his character.
Anyway I love him, I love my tabaxi twins, and I never want to use metallic embroidery floss ever again.
These guys have been getting notes again so I thought I’d mention that they got me a full time job at my favorite locally owned fabric and yarn store.
I had taken an informal short video showing how I do "The Rapunzel Curls" on ponies
(ugh, tinsel...)
but never properly posted it and lost it.
People have said to me this looks just like factory curl, but if you look, I tend to reverse the direction of the factory curl when doing this. That's just how my hands want to do it, if you can do the twist in the opposite direction, you'll be closer replicating the factory curl.
The twist at the beginning is the key.
I don't do videos so it's rough, but here is another attempt.
Do you like my pajamas?
What you need:
+ Plastic straws - These are milkshake straws which are larger and thicker than regular drinking straws. I use boba straws for larger curls. I don't worry about plastic waste in this case because I will reuse the same straws for decades.
You want to cut the straws to an appropriate length (orange in the video - this one is a little too long for the hair I'm working on, but it's fine), then cut shorter segments and slice those long way once to make a little cap (purple).
+ Pipe cleaners (green), small hair clips, bobby pins, etc.
+ A source of heat (will elaborate later), or time.
I will add extra spaces to make it easier to read.
Comb the hair. It should be as smooth as you can get it. I'm using a flea comb, here.
Lay the ends across the long straw a little way up the hair.
Snap the cap straw on top.
Holding the sides of the hair so it doesn't spread out in the cap straw, slide both straws to the ends of the hair until the ends are completely under the cap straw.
Roll the straw a little bit, making sure the ends are secured.
Give the whole straw set up a little twist around the hair.
Roll to the scalp firmly.
Put one end of the pipe cleaner into the straw, and wrap it around as shown.
After that you can either leave the hair alone for a couple weeks and if it's nylon, it will take that shape.
Or you can apply heat.
I usually put the whole pony/doll head into a plastic baggie (I taught Froggy about that!) put the baggie into a large cup or bowl, and fill the cup/bowl with boiling hot water right off the electric kettle. MAKE SURE the open end of the bag doesn't get down into the water so the doll/pony doesn't get wet. I lay it over the lip of the cup/bowl. Throw a towel over top to help trap the heat and then don't touch it until the water has cooled on it's own.
You absolutely can apply boiling water directly to the hair, but I don't do that for a couple reasons.
You have to wait for the hair to dry all the way through before you can do anything with it which can take a few days depending on the weather and I'm not that patient.
Pipe cleaners and bobby pins can rust.
Then you can unroll the curlers immediately or leave them in the hair for a few days and get an even more defined curl. The longer you leave the curlers in, the better the hair takes their shape.
thank you
antipurpose flour this shit will actively kill you if you use it for anything
I SHOT THE HEAD OFF THE CPR MANNEQUIN WHAT THE HELL
IM GONNA PISS MYSELF JFC
ok so the last time i got cpr certified was when i was a tiny lil thing in high school to be a lifeguard for the kiddie swim lessons we taught. so its been a minute, yeah?
i am required to be cpr certified in my position at my job, smth that has not been brought up at ALL in the last 3 years ive been here, so i went to retake the course and all that. I went with a coworker, we partnered up and named our dummy Charles because we're cool like that. ended up having to use the table instead of the floor because of my bad knee and recently healed ankle, so we're above everyone else. We get charles ready, and i end up going first as the first responder, so i'm going over the process in my brain. 30 compressions at 100-120BPM, two respirations, AED, etc. etc. I was also remembering how hard it was to do proper compressions in my tiny little body at 14, so I knew it took more force than i thought to get the compressions deep enough, so i prepared to have to use my body weight and fucking send it. But! it turns out, since im not 4'11" anymore it was in fact Not Very Difficult to get past 2 inches, so it was fine and the instructor actually told me to ease up. I did awesome, compressions were deep and at proper rate, gold star for me.
however, my brain did not connect the dots that if the compressions would take less force, so would the respirations. Me at 14 had to use my full lung capacity to get the chest to rise at all, so I, with my full adult lung capacity and 10+ years of competitive swim, vocal training with breath support, and occasional dabble into brass instruments as I make my way around an orchestra, decide that I need to still full blast for the thing to work. i have to save charles, after all, so fucking send it ig. two very fast, very HARD breaths.
charles's chest plate lifts off and resettles incorrectly, i am none the wiser because i am (wrongly) focusing on the fucking little LEDs on the dummy being green instead of actually registering the movement of the chest like youre supposed to. My coworker, however, has noticed that charles might be A Little Fucked Right Now, and tries to get my attention, but i am FOCUSED because you gotta do the full two minutes and all that. so i switch back to the compression.
the chest plate, no longer in proper position to hold the head in place, clicks weirdly, and next thing i know the charles's head fucking LAUNCHES off into the fucking wall, nearly missing another person's head. his chest flipped up off his body and his head is gone and trailing that little plastic bag that the air you breathe into, completely deflated.
i fucking OVERINFLATED the bag to the point where when i did a compression it fucking POPPED and sent the head flying. the class had to stop for a full fucking 15 minutes to get itself together while i melted into my chair in embarassment i wanted to DIE
the instructor was fucking dying she was all like, 'ok you remember when i was giving the list of instances when you can stop cpr? you can stop now because he's dead' AND EVERYONE WAS LAUGHING AT ME AND MY COWORKER WAS FUCKING HEAVING AND WHEEZING HARD ENOUGH TO FALL OUT OF HIS CHAIR AND IM SO FUCKING MORTIFIED
I DECAPITATED CHARLES IN A CLASS ON HOW TO SAVE SOMEONES LIFE SOMEONE FUCKING KILL ME
