For Everything A Reason -- Ben | Vivien | Violet
From the moment Vivien told him that the three of them were going to sit down and try and work through everything, he was ecstatic. He felt for the first time in 7 years, that he would be able to really talk to them. Not use his psychological bullshit, as Violet always called it, to manipulate them - mostly Vivien, into doing what he wanted her to do. The truth was, he was very handsome, and he loved Vivien dearly, but he knew he hurt them both. As he stood in the hallway, looking out into the backyard, he spotted the gazebo. The same gazebo he built to please Vivien, and to hide his past indiscretion. That’s where everything went wrong, he looked longingly, diving into the past. He knew he couldn’t take anything back, he could only remember and move on. Move on with his family, the only thing that ever mattered to him.
Ben pushed his body off the wall under the big window, and walked towards what used to be his office. He walked to the desk that now occupied the spot where his used to. He slid his left index finger along the slick wood, waiting for them. The chime of the old grandfather clock began to chime and startled him out of his daze. He turned to looked toward the door. “Vivien!?”, “Violet!?”
Vivien wasn’t entirely certain what was going to unfold at this family meeting that she had arranged for herself, her husband and their daughter. She was hoping that a fair amount of their issues could be aired out and talked about in a civil manner. Something the Harmon family was no where near being good at doing. Vivien held grudges, a lot of them - Violet was no different. Through this all, Vivien knew that ultimately this was going to be more less, Violet screaming at Ben and Vivien about their poor choices in parenting, not to mention their inability to make a choice about being together. Violet’s lack of wanting her parents back together was something that had always been unclear to the strawberry blonde. Were Ben and Vivien that miserable to be around? Did they truly fight that much and show that much hatred towards one another that it was unclear if there was any love there at all? Vivien loved Ben, she loved him with all that she had. She had loved him for 17 years before her death and even now, 7 years after their death - her heart still belonged to the man who knew exactly how to tear her apart in ways that no one else could.
Hearing Ben call out her name, Vivien knew that she could no longer hide and prolong the meeting, the sooner she showed up, the sooner Violet would appear and the sooner they could all start the healing process of their family. “I’m here.” Vivien replied standing in the doorway of what used to be Ben’s office, when they owned the house - a lot had changed in the seven years following their deaths. The room was now used as what Vivien could only assume was a conference room. Looking around the room, her eyes fell on her husband. “I’ll call for Violet. I have a better chance of getting her to appear than you do.” She commented, frowning faintly. The relationship or lack thereof between Violet and Ben was something that Vivien had never expected to happen. Sure, they had always had their issues while they were living, but the blonde never imagined that it would be anything like it was today. “Violet. Sweetheart, it’s time to have that chat - we talked about.” Vivien called out - hoping her daughter was in a good mood, and praying that she could learn to forgive Ben, just as she was trying.
How the fuck was it that no matter how loud she blasted the iPod she had somehow managed to keep of hers even as all of her others things were tossed out in large plastic bags as if she had never existed at all, she could still hear her mother's voice over it all. It was ironic, about her things being hauled off like that, she always thought her life was a dump and now what had remained of it was dropped off at an actual dump. There was nothing left of the Harmon family in this house, no more stupid pasta arm in the kitchen, no more psychology books in the study, no more band posters in the upstairs bedroom that had once been a gnarly green but was now a sterile white. All of the character had practically been stripped from this once hauntingly beautiful home. Hospitals were freaky enough let alone a house like this being turned into one.
Rolling her eyes as she skulked into the room, feet feeling heavier with each step until she mockingly raised her hands and bent her fingers like some sort of cheesy zombie in a bad horror flick. "Boo..." The word deadpanned from her before she dropped her hands back to her sides. "We didn't talk about shit, you did. You babbled on about second chances like you always do and I'm supposed to, what? Just go along with it like some sort of dim-witted puppet? No, thanks. Can I go now? The sight of you both is kinda making me sick to my stomach. So, you know, good on you for somehow being able to make a ghost sick." Mockingly giving a bright smile and a thumbs up before her face retreated back to it's usual flat expression of a proverbial deer caught in a bear trap, wide-eyed and haunted by the undeniable end.
They Say It's Haunted || Alec & Violet
His hands motioned mockingly with a dip of his head just as she told him to calm down. He probably wouldn’t have been so caught off guard by her presence had he not been so fixated on the silence and room alike, so if anything, this was definitely his own fault. With a slightly exasperated sigh, he settled the iPod down to his side figuring it’d be rude to listen to it now. The house had a tendency of putting his nerves on edge. He tried to conceal the fear, mostly by going off to one of the less busy rooms but this girl had managed to catch him off guard. He licked his lips before returning his gaze to her — a nervous quirk he had allowed to become a habit. He’d been visiting for quite some time now, and had never seen her before. Maybe she was new or something, who knew? “Yeah, I know, but it’s the only room I’m allowed in where the nurses don’t linger. A few pass by, but that’s about it.” He shrugged. “— and I’m waiting for visitation rights, if I ever get them, that is. I have a uh, a friend in here, and the nurses give me a hard time considering I’m not exactly family. Thing is, her parents are locked up and she has no siblings, so that leaves me, and now we’re back to square one.” He chuckled wryly as a thumb brushed over his lips — yet another nervous tick. He was full of them of course. He only had so many years of discomfort and worrying to build them up.
"Sounds like a rough gig, man." Violet wanted to care, she used to care once upon a midnight dreary but now it seemed all she had was regrets and wasted time in her own personal purgatory locked within Los Angeles suburbia -- this really must be hell. Listening to him, more or less lingering on his every word and chosen tone as he spilled pieces of his wayward story to her and she wondered if he was just very open or if he just didn't have anyone else to talk to so when he got the chance it all just sort of came spilling out, she sure as hell knew that feeling. "Knowing this fucked up place, you're going to be waiting until her funeral before they let you see her." Sure, that sounded harsh but Violet was never the sort who laced anything with sugar for the sake of sparing someone the truth. The world was so full of bullshit that no one was ever honest with someone, too afraid of being politically incorrect or some shit, to just say how they felt or tell the truth -- she sure as fuck knew what it felt like to be surrounded by liars. "Sorry, it's true. The staff here is fucked. They try to keep anyone who can do anything out so they can conduct their 'treatments' or whatever on the people here, it's way shitty." A light shrug of her small shoulders was given before her expression and her tones softened in a rare show of actual sympathy. "I'm sorry..." The words almost perished on her lips before they could fall between them.

There was always a strange air about in that small foyer that seemed to set off Alec. It forced a sense of discomfort to crawl up his spine, though for some reason it was the room he spent the most time in. There he sat right at the bottom of the staircase, as per usual — arms crossed, resting casually over his knees. He spent the majority of his visitations at the hospital waiting. At first it bothered him, but now it came naturally. His eyes would study every inch of the small room, and at this point he memorized the chips in the wooden panels of the doorways, the faint scratch marks on the floor, and even figured out which of the floorboards creaked more than others. There were moments when he thought he was losing it — that maybe the madness was rubbing off on him, but given some thought, it always concluded to boredom. He began to lazily pull his iPod from his backpack, but stopped once he noticed a shadow a few steps higher. “Jesus!” He spoke, nearly jumping from his spot. “You scared the shit out of me. How long have you been there?”
"Jeeze, you need to relax." The dearly departed teenager quipped in her usual acerbic tones which were sprinkled with mild amusement that she had scared him -- perhaps she wasn't so lousy at this whole ghost things as much as she thought. Or perhaps this place, oh and didn't she know it, radiated with a foreboding sense of darkness and mental instability that would make just about anyone uneasy. So many damned stepped through those stained glass-graced doors and so many more never wandered haplessly back out again. She would never fucking understand how people could be so stupid. It was the reason the world was filled with warning labels instead of common sense. Even those who were very well aware of this place's blood-soaked reputation still came here and even worse, made it into a hospital which were already terrible and creepy within themselves. Daring to walk a bit closer to him as she quirked one of her brows and rested a hand on the intricately-carved banister once she was close enough. Idly picking at the lacquer there as she studied him, deduced him as if she were Sherlock-fucking-Holmes or something because what more could the dead do than watch the living? "This isn't a waiting room, you know." She continued. "Who or what're you waiting for anyway, hm?" Still such a haplessly curious little kitten even though she should have learned her lesson long ago -- whatever, it's not like anything could hurt her anymore, she did that all on her own. Just another stupid teenage cliche.
The pulsing presence of something tarnished and trapped made itself known on the bottom few steps of the main staircase. Violet could have occupied herself with the wiles of being dead like tormenting the living but she felt there was already enough torment in this house turned hospital. Instead she just observed -- this must have been what it felt like when people used that stupid metaphor 'on the outside looking in'.
What's in my hearts been rearranged. Vivien ll Violet
Vivien wasn’t shocked by Violet’s outburst. Her angry towards the entire situation was completely warranted. Vivien and Ben did deserve each other in some fucked up way-they were both unbelievably selfish and rather than just parting ways and ending this ridiculous cycle of back and fourth bullshit; they were continiously breaking up and making up, over and over again - so much that it was like a bad movie on replay. They were stuck, stuck on repeat, stuck in this house, stuck in this hell. How could anyone get over their issues in a place like this..especially if you lacked a heartbeat. For once..everything that Violet was saying made sense to her. Ben and Vivien’s inability to make a decision and to keep this up was too much for any of them to take, it sure as hell wasn’t healthy. Vivien allowing Ben to break her heart just to come crawling back with some pathetic excuse and empty promises to change - made the strawberry blonde weak. It made her one of those women that she vowed to never be like, you know the kind that no matter how fucked up the situation always took the son of a bitch that made them angry, bitter and broken back. She wasn’t the person she once was, her miscarriage and Ben’s affair and lies had destroyed her. She was broken.
"Violet!" Vivien called out turning on her own heals as Violet stormed past her. "Violet, stop! I’m not done talking to you about this." She added as she walked down the hall in an attempt to catch up to the girl. "I know you’re angry. You’re angry, I get that. You have every right to be angry at both of us for all of the shit we have dragged you through before this house happened and after it happened. I’m sorry - I’m sorry that you are hurting. I’m sorry that dad and I both made mistakes that we can’t take back." Vivien paused and looked up at her.."I don’t expect you to fully understand how I feel about your father despite all of the shitty things that he has done. His affair and his mistakes don’t change how I feel. I don’t regret being with him because, baby he’s troubled and flawed and no where near perfect - but I fell in love with him. I fell in love with his flaws and the way he made me feel. I will never be able to let that go, because he gave me you, and you are the most precious thing in the entire world to me." She paused once more, and took a long deep breath. "I want my family back just as much as he does. If he’s willing to try and prove his loyalty - I think it would be a good idea for us to at least try and listen to what he has to offer."
Violet knew that her mother wasn't going to just take those words and stew in them and for that the girl was almost thankful because it meant that at least she had some fight left in her that hadn't been choked out by bullshit. Stopped when she was shouted at, beneath all of the anger and the constant stream of heartache, this woman was still her mother and she still loved and perhaps even respected her although the latter was fading alarmingly quick. Scoffing as she turned back towards the source of the current disdain she was feeling. "Of course he's willing to prove his loyalty, he's like a lovesick puppy, it's pathetic just like you are." The words soaked in the same irritation and anger she was currently radiating. "He doesn't have any other choice just like everyone else in this shithole. Do you really think if he could leave that he would still be loyal? How do you know he's not going to or already has fucked Hayden again? She's in here too, you know. I bet if he had the chance he'd be gone like," Snapping her fingers for reiteration, "... that."
Violet was a teenage girl, she was lost and drowning in her own sadness like so many others who had fallen victim to this house, she shouldn't be expected to function on the level her parents were currently stuck on constant replay in. "Do whatever you want, you're going to anyway. This house sucks, man, I get that. I get that you're lonely or whatever but you know what -- join the fucking club." Shaking her head as her amber eyes smoldered at the woman. "Just don't ask me to go along with the charade because I won't. You and dad dragged me here in the first place, took me away from all my friends and now look at us. Good job, Mom, giving him chances has really worked out well for us all in the past." Sarcasm and hatred dripping from her chosen tones. "Are we done now?" Or would you like to hear more? I could go all damn day since time doesn't really fucking matter anymore anyway!
What's in my hearts been rearranged. Vivien ll Violet
The sarcasm that escaped Violet’s lips every time she opened her mouth was something the girl indefinitely had inherited from her father. The two were more alike than Violet would have liked to admit, Vivien assumed…but she saw it. She saw Ben every time she looked into Violet’s eyes, she was smart, witty and so many more things that Ben was. Lucky for Vivien, Violet was far more loyal than her father was. She never made promises that she couldn’t keep and she always meant everything that she said with her daddy’s tongue and temper. “Violet…there’s no need for sarcasm. I need to have a serious conversation with you. No fooling around.”
Vivien’s arms folded across her chest and she took a few deep breaths unsure of how to start the conversation - knowing that she needed to ease into the matter at hand out of fear that Violet would fly off the handles and disappear before they could properly discuss the situation and her own input on it. Clearing her throat, Vivien looked up from the stairs beneath her feet and up to meet Violet’s caramel eyes. “I saw your dad today, and we talked.” She paused, “We talked about everything and I know he’s said a lot of the same things before, but he seems to want to really change and make things right this time around. I want to know how you feel about that.” Vivien felt that straight to the point was better than beating around the bush with a topic as sensitive as this. What more could she say about the situation and the conversation with Ben — he had just sent her into a gunfight without any ammo.
When Violet was scolded by her mother she almost forgot that she was dead, that they were both dead and the reason behind that being the fact of things. For just a stolen moment she allowed herself to almost feel like a normal teenage girl having a less than welcomed conversation with her mother like every other person her age but she wasn't even, not technically enough, that particular age anymore. It had been seven years since Violet Harmon had a birthday and seven years since she could technically claim she was sixteen. Not so sweet sixteen. "How are we supposed to have a serious conversation about something so fucking ridiculous?!" The girl exclaimed as venom dripped from her chosen tones.
"I'm sorry, Mom," No, she wasn't. "I'm sorry but you can't be serious. You saw Dad today and you talked, no shit, that's what people do when they see each other. What really happened is you saw him and he spun some of his pretty words at you because he knows how to push people, he knows what to say and how to say it. I guess they teach that in psychology or asshole school or whatever the hell it's called." Oh, she was angry and she had every right to be. "He cheated on you! He cheated and he lied and he's part of the reason we're stuck here in the first place!" Streaming a hand through her hair as she shook her head. "I used to think you were such a strong woman, you know? I used to admire how strong you were but now it seems like I'm the only person in this pathetic excuse of a family who has a backbone anymore." The themes beneath those words? Violet missed Tate, every second of every single goddamn day almost but she knew she couldn't cave, she wouldn't cave and yet here was her mother and her father doing exactly that. "You two fucking deserve each other." Storming past the woman in a huff and a flurry of emotion burning almost hot enough to make the cheap wallpaper weep from the walls.
What's in my hearts been rearranged. Vivien ll Violet
Vivien wasn’t entirely sure how she was going to tell Violet the current situation with Ben, and more accurately what he was planning on doing until he succeeded and ultimately got what he wanted. Violet was strong, independent and willful. Everything that Vivien had always hoped that her daughter would be. There was no need to sugar coat anything when it came to the troubled marriage between Vivien and Ben Harmon, they were complicated and just as fast as they came together - it all fell apart just as fast as it started. She didn’t blame Violet for feeling the way that she did towards Ben, and although Vivien couldn’t even explain why she kept allowing him to come crawling back as often as she did to herself, she definitely couldn’t explain her reasons to her daughter. The mistakes the strawberry blonde and the dark haired man had made over the years weren’t something that she was proud of. It was never an example that she wanted to set for Violet on how marriage was or even how a family was supposed to be.
When Violet appeared on the staircase and stopped halfway down, Vivien stopped at the bottom of the stairs and looked up at her, half smiling. “Can you come down here please, I would very much like to not have to shout it for everyone to hear.” Deep down Vivien knew how Violet was going to react and she knew that her daughter was smart enough to know what this talk was going to involve. “Please?” As much as Vivien loved Ben and loved the idea of the three of them being a family again, the blonde knew that she couldn’t keep doing this - it wasn’t fair to Violet, and Violet was all that mattered anymore.
A roll of caramel hues and a slight flip of her long dark cornsilk tresses before she skulked down the remainder of the stairs towards where her mother was standing. "Why not? Shouting is sorta what people do here. It's a hospital, lots of screaming and crying." Violet deadpanned with her usual tart sarcasm and disdain towards the world around her. People were such bullshit, dead people weren't any different which was not only a disappointing cliche but also a reminder that everything anyone ever told her about death being about piece was just another lie which seemed to be the foundation her entire life was based on. Weren't parents supposed to be an example to follow on how to be and what not to do? Seems her family was more the latter than anything else and it was becoming almost a laughable sideshow at this point.
Violet knew that no one was perfect but she could never quite understand how one family could be so entirely fucked up on such a vast array of spectrums. One hand still resting on the polished wood of the banister, thumb nail idly picking at the lacquer as if she needed something to focus on other than the way her mother was currently looking at her. The teenager could already sense what was coming, another stupid fucking heartfelt conversation about family and forgiveness that Violet became less interested in each time it came up. The doe-eyed girl's faith in love was all but diminished and she told herself that she was contented with that fact at this point, being dead will do that to you, gives you nothing but time to think about shit.
What's in my hearts been rearranged. Vivien ll Violet
In light of Ben making a reappearance and attempting to get Vivien back for what felt like the millionth time in the last 7 years, the strawberry blonde knew that she needed to talk to Violet about it. Since their deaths Vivien’s husband and their daughter had not been on the best of terms. Hell, Vivien herself hadn’t even been on great terms with the man she once called the love of her life, but here he was once again - begging to have his family back..for Vivien to forgive him, to give him another chance. As much as she wanted to believe that they had something that would last and that somehow in this fucked up eternal hell they could work through all of the issues within their marriage and their family and actually be the loving family they had been before the miscarriage, before the affair, before this house. Learning to trust him once again would take time, believing him would take just as long, but telling Violet that Ben is making it his new goal to win them back was going to be no easy task. “Violet…we need to talk.” Vivien called out wandering threw the halls and peering into rooms.
Violet was a teenage girl, not exactly a cakewalk, that was what she always said. She was a bundle of music lyrics, macabre interests that seemed almost ironic now and a victim of her own mind at more times than she was willing to admit. She made mistakes, rather big ones before the end snuffed her out and locked her away like a grounded child in this house but she was allowed to make those sorts of mistakes but she felt her parents weren't. They were supposed to be these fucking beacons of hope, light and guidance but all they cared about was themselves and avoiding everything as if it wasn't happening. She sometimes believed that their deaths was a way of, I don't fucking know, karma or some shit forcing them to deal with their issues like a dearly departed counseling session you could never leave. How were they supposed to help her if they were so fucked up themselves?
The girl didn't pretend to understand a damn thing about marriage or even relationships, shit -- her first and only one hadn't exactly been the epitome of happily ever after but that was a whole different source of pain for the young ghost. Hearing her mother's voice like a child being called for dinner she trudged haplessly down a few of the stairs of the grand staircase before stopping about halfway down. "So talk..." Somehow she could already tell what the topic of today's conversation was going to be, the same as it always was -- her father. What could her mother possibly have to say this time that she hadn't heard before? Sure, she loved the woman, biologically engineered and naturally so but she felt like a bad series of songs were on a constant loop with them now. Mom, change the song, this one sucks!
