Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune interpretations of John Schoenherr’s original artwork. Dune’s writer, Frank Herbert, said John Schoenherr was “the only man who has ever visited Dune.”

“I fell in love. Or, more accurately, I realized, and accepted for the first time that love was not merely a general, human possibility, nor merely the disaster it had so often, by then, been for me—according to me—nor was it something that happened to other people, like death, nor was it merely a mortal danger: it was among my possibility, for here it was, breathing and belching beside me, and it was the key to life. Not merely the key to my life, but to life itself.”

Ray thinks he should write his Mom and tell her how far he’s made it. Tell her that he’s alive, and eating okay, and drinking enough water when he can, and getting some sleep, and that he has a very good friend with him, someone she would like very much, if she got to meet him; and that he’s happy, underneath it all, maybe even as happy as he was when Dad was alive, when they were a family, because even if the world was a piece of shit, he had the sense, then, that everything would turn out alright in the end. But he doesn’t know if that would be wise. If they could trace him, somehow, even from a dropped-off postcard. Dust for prints. He doesn’t know, actually, if he’ll ever talk to his Mom again. “What will we do if we make it to Mexico?” He can’t bring himself to say when. When has a sort of confidence that borders on arrogance. He’s not superstitious, but he doesn’t want to be accused of stupidity, either. “I dunno,” Pete shrugs. It sounds as though he doesn’t mind not knowing. “Live? We can find a room to rent somewhere, get jobs. Always need ranch hands in Mexico, I hear. Cattle farming’s still big business.” Ray can’t help making a face at himself. “You really think I could cut it?” “I think you can do anything you put your mind to, Ray.”
