It must be very fun, then! Watching what you have written coming to live with such diverse people. It’s all fun to do your own acting, I am sure, but then to see how other people interpret what you have done in their own ways? It makes me feel happy and I am not even the one doing it!
It is! I’m very lucky. I get to do what I love. And, you know, it sounds all well and good, and I’m the first one to support the actor’s interpretation. But sometimes they do it wrong.
That’s wonderful! Do you usually play the lead roles? Aah, I am sorry if I ask too many questions, this is all just new and interesting to me.
Nah, I’m not really an actor. I just did a few things in college. I’m a much better writer and director.

Oh no, please, forgive me! I shall have to visit sometime! I would really love to go, even if I don’t understand everything. I like Shakespeare and seeing it in such a different format sounds like an amazing experience. A play, but also a dance, but also art.
Really. No worries. And you really should. Most of the actors speak along too, so, I’m sure you can follow. I got my start adapting Shakespeare into ASL. I even got to play Deaf Hamlet.

[She grins.]

Ah, well, it’s the ‘salad’ and ‘talent’ thing, you know? Lots of words just look similar, so forgive me if I ever stumble. They happen all the time. We generally only have a few weeks between shows. We’re doing Shakespeare in ASL soon. We do it every year. Our theater is uptown.
[Georgia smiles.] Oh, it’s okay. I’m just sitting here complaining to myself.

Also you missed a good opportunity to work something in with fart and farce and stuff.
You do not hate me. No one hates me. It wouldn’t be politically correct. And we always need help. We can’t afford to pay enough people.
Farts are less funny to me. I understand they make noise.

That sounds so interesting! It must be a very difficult thing, da? Conveying everything in the plays just with sign language and body language? I mean, surely it must seem normal to you, but perhaps to someone who is not so well versed in it…I am not making much sense, am I? I apologize.
Da? Oh! I got it. I’m sorry. Sometimes words look similar, and I think I missed something. But it’s all very expressive. It’s like dance. But you’re on the right track. It’s just different sometimes, you know? I experience the world differently. And it’s okay. Some people are rude about it.
[Georgia sits tiredly on the bench at the bus stop, leaning forward to rest her head in her hands.]
Wake me up when the bus is here. There’s no money in my wallet, so don’t bother.

I am sure that he did, if he went! What kind of plays do you do? Are they funny ones? Or dramas?
I do both. They’re in American Sign Language, though, so I don’t know how a good a time he would have had. I mean, most of my actors speak aloud, but some don’t.
Sloths are not lazy! They’re are big and sweet and sometimes a little slow, which ya’ are when you’re sleepy, don’t lie.
[She laughs and then her face falls and she groans.]
They eat their own poop. Gross, you know how to flatter a gal.
They sleep all day! That’s their whole thing. And I’m never sleepy. My blood is coffee now. [He bursts out laughing.] That is gross. I’ll have to use that line.
But did he come to see one of your plays? That seems to be the most important part!
I don’t know. That’s a good question. I hope he liked it.
I guess if I did have to compare you to anything, it would be something close to a teddybear? Maybe a sloth?
A sloth? Excuse me. I am not lazy. I’m a very hard worker. Maybe you’re a koala. Feel the need to climb all over things.
