Bicuspid Aortic Valve - Congenital Heart Diseases

Also known as congenital heart defects, congenital heart diseases are a group of heart defects that are present since birth. While some of these diseases pose little danger to health and may result in no significant problem, many other congenital heart diseases can cause serious complications that can begin after birth or occur later in life. Some of the other common symptoms of congenital heart diseases include dyspnea (shortness of breath), weakness, edema, and abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). There are over 20 different types of congenital heart diseases, including pulmonary atresia, bicuspid aortic valve, Ebstein anomaly, tricuspid atresia, and long QT syndrome. The bicuspid aortic valve is a condition where the aortic valve contains two cusps (triangular structures that make opening and closing of valves possible) instead of 3 cusps as in normal aortic valve (tricuspid aortic valve). The aortic valve is situated between the lower left chamber of the heart and the aorta, which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When a bicuspid aortic valve occurs, the aortic valve may narrow, thus, blocking or reducing blood flow to the aorta. A bicuspid aortic valve may not be able to close tightly, causing some blood volumes to reverse from the aorta to the heart (a condition called aortic valve regurgitation). In most cases, bicuspid aortic valves don't present serious complications until adulthood or old age.
