In 6th grade, while under the influence (my mom incepted that a nice easy, stable, medical-oriented job was nice) I wrote down that I wanted to become an Optometrist. My 12 year old self would be amazed that I ended up being a street performer – everyday carrying my amp and salt-stained guitar as I walked down to the end of the Santa Monica pier to sing for people, with the Pacific Ocean as my stage. There were the harsh, cold winter days – where I'd walk out after the rain drizzled out, or just play through the skin-piercing wind on those January nights to a crowd of 1. And there were the vibrating summer days where the sun smiled, the seagulls soared – and the music swept hundreds of people into a moment. No more me, no more you, just together. An ode to one of my favorite places in the world - Santa Monica. Link in bio. I wrote this song with producer extraordinaire @dionleonmusic - we were inspired by how we'd both moved to LA as music-lovers looking for more. For me, I found that as a street performer in Santa Monica. Those two years of singing everyday for the people on the pier was a beautiful time in my life that I'll always remember - full of hope, joy, and a strange type of human connection you can only feel when you're singing directly to someone just a few feet away from you. It was this little book called Lyrics as Poetry, and I still can't believe my words are in it. More than that, I hope you guys enjoy this polyamorous love letter to self-expression and songwriting.
