In his first interview since finishing Star Wars and that unguarded address from a Hyde Park stage, he explains how both platforms inspired
... Kelly Marie Tran?
thanks for admitting you didnât read past the headline, idiot.
But he is also talking about other people of colour in the cast â Naomi Ackie and Kelly Marie Tran and even Oscar Isaac (âa brother from Guatemalaâ) â who he feels suffered the same treatment; he is acknowledging that some people will say heâs âcrazyâ or âmaking it upâ, but the reordered character hierarchy of The Last Jedi was particularly hard to take.
âLike, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,â he says. âYou knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all. So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, âI enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience...â Nah, nah, nah. Iâll take that deal when itâs a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Letâs be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. Iâm not exposing anything.â
but what he was SPECIFICALLY talking about that was unique to him and his being Black was the threats of boycotts just because he was Black and in the film:
âIâm the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race,â he says, holding my gaze. âLetâs just leave it like that. It makes you angry with a process like that. It makes you much more militant; it changes you. Because you realise, âI got given this opportunity but Iâm in an industry that wasnât even ready for me.â Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, âBlack this and black that and you shouldnât be a Stormtrooper.â Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that Iâm this way. Thatâs my frustration.â

RIP Chadwick Boseman. A video of him speaking about communicating with kids who had cancer. Unknown to the public, he was already battling his fight with cancer.

Jacob Blakeâs sister: âIâm not sad. Iâm not sorry. Iâm angry. And Iâm tired. I havenât cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years.â
Required watching.
[I am my brotherâs keeper, and when you say the name Jacob Blake, make sure you say âfather,â make sure you say âcousin,â make sure you say âson,â make sure you say âuncle,â but most importantly, make sure you say âhuman.â Human life. Let it marinateâin your mouth, in your mind. A human life, just like every single one of yâall⊠Weâre human. His life matters. So many people have reached out to me telling me theyâre sorry that this happened to my family. Well donât be sorry, because this has been happening to my family for a long time. Longer than I can account for. It happened to Emmett Till. Emmett Till is my family. Philando. Mike Brown. Sandra. This has been happening to my family. And Iâve shed tears for every single one that itâs happened to. This is nothing new. Iâm not sad. Iâm not sorry. Iâm angry. And Iâm tired. I havenât cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years. Iâm also a Black history minor. So, not only have I been watching it in the thirty years Iâve been on this planet, but Iâve been watching it for years before we were even alive. Iâm not sad. I donât want your pity. I want change.]
i love back
