David Niven was an actor from England, although I think he's mostly Scottish. He was in the army before becoming an actor, and when WWII started, he left his career and joined the army, the same as Dino. He had a small role in an actual event where another actor posed as a British General to mislead the Nazis about the location of D-Day! He also was a part of Phantom, a British military division that located and reported enemy positions. He's about as close to a real life Howler as there is!
After the war, he was in a bunch of movies, including tons I've seen, like My Man Godfrey, The Pink Panther, Casino Royale, Murder By Death, and Death on the Nile!
Mickey Rooney was also an actor, who joined the Army for WWII, but he entertained the troops, less Howling Commando and more Stan Lee. Rooney was in a lot of movies, but I only recognized Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town where he played Santa.
