The Bakery Blonde ✦ Petre & Leigha (Tuesday Nov. 4th afternoon)

Leigha was happy to get back into the swing of things. She hadn’t had a full day with every activity in a while. Two jobs, dance and magic practice all in one day was just the distraction she needed at the moment so she was in a fairly good mood when Maeve left her at Bakehouse to deal with some supplier issues. They were pretty much stocked up on everything so she was just catering to the occasional customer and doodling on the chalk boards. When the bell rang signaling a new customer, Leigha turned around with her usual smile but it quickly fell from her face when she saw who had come in. “Nope. She had to run some errands. It’s just me,” she answered his question flatly. “Is there something I can get for you?” She wanted him to just turn around and leave so she wouldn’t have to deal with him, but he was technically a customer so she would try to be polite and do her job as politely as she could muster.

He kept the smile, but couldn’t stop the sigh. “Damn, I was hoping to catch her, it’s been awhile. Do you know when she’ll be back?” Maybe if he just stuck around for a little bit Maeve would show up and his conversation with Leigha would be brief. He could always leave now, but he didn’t want to be rude, he still wanted a chocolate scone, and he really was hoping to see Maeve. Either way he was going to have to order and Leigha clearly wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible. “Can I get a chocolate scone please?” While the other grabbed his pastry, he rocked back and forth on his feet awkwardly before attempting to engage in small talk. “So, um…how’ve you been? We never really have much time to talk,” he chuckled slightly trying to ease the tension. It was true, they both kept the chatter to a minimum, although, that was because of Leigha, not Petre. He kept his distance, not wanting to add to the friction, but the Human wanted to be on good terms with her, even get to know her if possible. However, Leigha had never given him the opportunity to do so.

After they continued on the sidewalk several yards Edmund turned to the young man holding a cigarette between his lips. Believe it or not he didn’t care for smoking, and his face flashed a micro expression of loathing before he quickly corrected it. Instead he flattened his features, and let humans question hang in the air a tad too long, purposely making it uncomfortable. “Petre Dalca,” he let out the man’s namely slowly before he added. “Romanian, is it not? Veteran, drug addict, and barista.” He paused and sighed before continued. “You’ve lived a very interesting life in such a short amount of time.” Edmund had spent the afternoon reading over the file Killian had delivered earlier on the man. “I thought you and I shall have a chat. Ah…forgive me. I’m Edmund Jernigan, and given that you’ve been claimed by one of my Witches you and I need to discuss exactly what that means for you.” From the file he gathered Petre had a history with fae before Kate. There was an engagement to a faerie that had passed away years ago, and a connection to Corbin Harlow a caster Witch. Finally for the first time Edmund flashed a smile albeit it a chastising one. “Tell me what your new status means to you?” He quickly cut the smile and looked the human straight in the eye very seriously.

While the man’s behavior and mere presence made him nervous, he didn’t show it, and refused to give in to the man’s obvious air of intimidation. His stone façade slipped when the Witch began to rattle off various labels that could apply to him, but only surprise shown through. However, that surprise turned to indignation as Edmund continued. He waited until the other was finished, casually inhaling his cigarette, allowing the smoke to calm him as much as possible. The fake smiles and proper etiquette didn’t fool him. There was nothing pleasant about this man. Anyone with eyes could see that and he wondered how Kate had fallen under her spell. Then again, the girl was young and the Fae world was new to her. This Witch had obviously been able take advantage of her naivety. The smoke billowed around him as he exhaled deeply before answering in a level voice. “Yes. I was born in Romania, I served in Afghanistan, I haven’t touched drugs in years (he was choosing to ignore the weekend in Vegas where he made several mistakes), and I work here.” He paused for a moment considering the questions about claiming. “Also, as far as I know Kate is not your Witch. She’s in Willow’s coven, but I appreciate you checking up on her. I’m sure she would be happy to know you’re looking out for her.” The Human had no idea what his new status meant, but he wasn’t going to admit that and he was sure Kate would be anything but pleased to know Edmund had come to interrogate him.

“Sure, come along,” said looking back over her shoulder. He was right, Leigha really didn’t need to be here when he cleaned himself up. She also knew that Leigha wasn’t exactly a fan of Petre although she wasn’t quite sure why and she would actually think it was better he left as soon as she came home. She had been really careful after that first incident where Leigha had seen the bruises Petre had caused, per her asking of course. After that she had made sure to get rid of all bruises and scratches before anyone saw her. But the damage had been done and apparently nothing could convince Leigha that Petre wasn’t some asshole who was abusing her.

“She doesn’t hate you. She doesn’t know you. And she’s as protective as you are. What would you do if you saw me covered in bruises and you had not put them there?” she asked trying to assure him while she cleaned up quickly. She was just done when Petre pressed her against the sink to kiss her a low groan escaping her when he asked her to come with him and offered to do what she had just talked about.

It was a highly tempting offer; the worst urge was gone but that didn’t mean she was completely satisfied. And apparently neither was Petre. His hands roaming her body, his body pressed into hers, it made her pulse quicken again. But then he talked about keeping her safe and she came back to reality. “I doubt I would be saver at your place. It would be the third place someone would look for me. Here, Black Cat, your place. I appreciate the sentiment but Leigha and I can take care of ourselves. And I really need to stay home tonight, I would love to … make true on what I said earlier and spend the night with you, but Leigha is my friend and she’s worried about me, just like you. And I’m worried about her too. We need to talk tonight, so much has happened today.”

She freed herself from him to no give in to temptation once again and put a little distance between them. “I’m sorry this day didn’t go as planned. We will do this some other time. I promise.”

“Yeah, but she attacked me at work even after I showed her your damage,” he teased. “And yes, if anyone hurt you I’d kill them,” he voice was still playfully, but there was a serious note to it as well. He didn’t want to seem overbearing or scare Kate by his admission, so he added, “I’m pretty sure Leigha would too and definitely Oz.” Petre hadn’t told Kate about his conversation with Oz and the Wolf’s threat before. He didn’t want her to feel like she needed to say something to him about it; he wasn’t some bitch that needed her protection. “Still she just doesn’t get it, and I think she’s just written me off as a dick.”

He didn’t care about Leigha or Oz though, he had Kate right now and that’s all that mattered. When she groaned, he ground into her, nowhere near ready to be done with her and she had already planted a delicious set of images in his mind. He tried to keep his face from hiding his disappointment, wanting to be understanding of her needs and in all honesty, she was probably right. If people had been following Kate, they knew where he lived, although he still felt like she’d be safer there. “Alright,” he nodded stepping back to give her some space, but kept his hands on her hips. When she pulled away completely, he let her go, accepting defeat.

After a moment he reached out for her hand. “It’s okay, really. I’m just glad you’re alright that’s all that matters to me.” He stepped towards her, but didn’t want to bring them together if that’s not what she wanted. “I understand, but promise me if anything happens you’ll let me know,” he paused watching her for a minute before placing a gentle kiss to her lips once more and tucking some hair behind her ear. His hand lingered on her face before withdrawing it. “I’m not leaving ‘til Leigha gets here. I don’t care what you say I’m not leaving you alone. Now come on, let’s go watch some TV ‘til mommy gets here,” he ticked his head to the side and plastered on a cheesy smile.

Petre tugged Kate out of the bathroom and into the living room. He plopped himself on the couch and pulled her into his side before passing over the remote so she could pick something. “I’m gonna hold you to that ya know?” He gave her a quick peck on the cheek and squeezed her sides.

It had been far too long since Petre had seen Maeve. Life had been beyond insane, and the extra bit of time he used to use to pop in and see her before work was now spent sleeping until the last possible minute, with Kate from time to time, although that was normally only on his days off, or talking to Corbin about everything so he didn’t lose his mind. Today, however, he was craving a chocolate scone and so he headed into Bakehouse hoping to spend some time with the fiery redhead. Instead, he was met with a tiny blonde, Leigha. How had he forgotten that she worked there? Apparently he was more out of it than he had even realized. He still put on a smile not wanting to seem rude. “Uh, hey Leigha, Maeve’s not here is she?” He asked hoping to avoid a conversation with Kate’s roommate. The last thing he needed was more shit, especially after his confrontation with Edmund the night before.

The pungent smell of espresso struck him the minute he opened the door. Kindly he held it as a mother and her small child walked through and passed. Not wanting to waste any more time then he already had, his eyes sought for Kate’s claimed human. After the Ball he assigned Killian to pull together a complete dossier on the man. While Edmund was familiar that he was a local barista he wasn’t prepared for the dark narrative he read. The man was easily what he would deem as both unstable and undesirable for the young impressionable Witch, and now she was tethered to him. He doubted Kate had even known the significance of it all. Standing in line he waited patiently for his turn. Finally at the counter he looked across to the man who stood behind it. He thought he saw a flicker of recognition in the human’s eyes.“Mr. Dalca I think it is in your best interest to take a break, and come speak with me.” His tone was taught with seriousness.

The weekend had gone horribly. To say it had gone poorly would be the understatement of the century and horribly couldn’t possibly begin to describe it. He knew the Halloween party would be awkward, but between the claiming, seeing Liliya, and the Human sacrifice, he was nothing short of traumatized and Kate seemed like she wasn’t fazed in the slightest. Monday was supposed to be his day off, but he didn’t need any extra time alone to think about things so he picked up an extra shift. Of course he wasn’t expecting that terrifying Witch man to show up, Edward? Edmund. “Oh, yes of course.” The last thing he wanted was to talk to this man, but he knew there was no choice in the matter. He hoped it wouldn’t be so bad, but he knew that it would probably be worse than he could imagine. Maybe he’d come out of it alive. He stepped out from behind the bar and headed outside, lighting a cigarette immediately upon feeling the air on his skin. After taking a long drag, he turned towards the man once more. “How can I help you?” There was a slight smile on his face and his manner was professional.

His words did not make her feel any better. “Oh great,” she voiced. “No way to tell who probably wants to kill you and who doesn’t. Awesome.” As for ‘the other stuff’, Robyn had been dealing with her nightmares almost her whole life. At this point she had had them for a much longer amount of time than she didn’t have them. Now she saw them in a totally different light however. They were not just nightmares from an overactive imagination. There was something bigger happening to her, and she had no idea as to what that was; and that was just as unsettling. “I guess the only thing to do is to keep on keepin’ on,” Robyn quoted her father. “Thanks for the talk and everything, but I really should get going. I left my dog outside and I’m honestly worried that little girl will want to take her home if I don’t go get her soon.” Robyn stood up and gave him a small wave goodbye as she left the coffee shop to collect Maisey.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to lie to you about it. The only thing I know is that a lot of them seem to hang out here, Black Cat is full of Witches and Solly’s has the Werewolves or Shifters I guess they’re called, but I’ve only met and heard of Wolves.” Remembering the conversation he had with the one earlier he decided he really should tell Robyn about Lu. “Actually, there’s this one Wolf, Lu Gott, who came in here earlier asking about you. He said you could find him there. Just be careful about that okay? I don’t really know what he wants.” It wasn’t really the best way to go about telling her, but how was he supposed to tell her that? She was already dealing with enough, the last thing the poor girl needed was someone else looking for her. “Alright, I understand. Just know that you can talk to me I guess, like I know how you feel ya know?” He hoped at least his offer would help her feel better, but he honestly couldn’t imagine how Robyn felt right now. He didn’t really have time to dwell on it though; he had to get back to work.

“I never said you didn’t,” he looked at the man with an upturned brow. Oz was a little taken aback at the human’s almost abrasive answer. Maybe Oz hadn’t come across as even toned as he had intended; but if the human wanted to play the game of who could be more intimidating, Oz could surely beat him at it. “I simply ask that you continue to treat her with kindness and respect, because I know that she has those things towards you,” he said plainly before he finished off his coffee. “However,” he started as he set the empty cup down on the table and his eyes turned serious. “If that changes and you find you can no longer do those things; don’t be a dick about it. She deserves better and I will find out; and it would be all too easy for me to throw you in a cell for as long as I felt necessary.” After a moment of glaring at the poor guy, Oz flashed him a smile, “okay?” Oz got up from the table but left his empty cup for the human to bus and subtly remind him of the social order of things. “See you around Dalca,” he said over his shoulder as he exited the shop.

Oz’s confusion at his response lead him to believe that perhaps he was being more defensive than he needed to be, but he felt like everyone was trying to make him out to be this bad guy Kate needed to be protected from and he was getting sick of it. He was about to explain that of course he would treat Kate right, but then came the however and another threat. Apparently he was right to be defensive after all. He wondered if Kate had any idea that all her friends were threatening him and how she would feel about it. With Oz he suspected there was more to it, perhaps an ounce of jealous, at least he hoped. “That won’t be a problem,” he stated firmly. There was no need to say more and it seemed Oz wouldn’t have given him opportunity to defend himself anyways as he trounced off with a holier than thou attitude. “Yeah, you will Oz.” He wasn’t going anywhere, the Wolf could bet on that, whether he liked it or not. Petre had no intention of becoming the man everyone already assumed he was.

The only thing I care about is you proving that you aren’t a total asshole and are actually worth her time,” Leigha said sternly. “And no, hurting people I care about it not my thing.” Not that it was any of his business; but she knew if she said that out loud he would throw it back in her face because she was making the situation they found themselves in her business. She honestly just wanted to tell him to the leave Kate the fuck alone, but she doubted he would listen; and if Kate found out she would probably see it as Leigha over-stepping. “I don’t want your number because I shouldn’t need it. As for your job, I would have no problem coming down and causing another scene if you pull this shit again. So if you want to keep yourself from truly having nothing then I suggest you heed my warning.” Leigha eyes were like piercing daggers. She had given him his chance to explain but that wasn’t the reason she had come down to the shop; and she didn’t care about his explanation. She had made her position known and she was over listening to his side of things. Leigha turned to head back to the girls’ apartment. It was times like these, when she was truly angry, that she wished her magic was far enough along the she could do real damage with it. Luckily for Petre, it wasn’t.

He interrupted her knowing at any minute she would storm off thinking she was somehow in the right about all of this. She was being closed-minded and unreasonable because of her own preconceived notions of how things were supposed to be and nothing pissed him off more than ignorance and arrogance on full display directed towards him. He still kept his voice as even as possible not wanting to fight with Kate’s friend anymore than necessary. “I haven’t done anything to show otherwise and I don’t intend to. I didn’t hurt Kate, we had sex, I’m sorry if your preferences are different, but that’s Kate’s decision.” It was if Leigha wasn’t considering Kate in this at all and only his part.

When she continued to threaten him and his job as if it was nothing, he nearly lost it. What was this girl’s problem? She was the one calling him indecent and yet she refused to show him an ounce of respect. “I didn’t pull any shit Leigha,” he continued as she glared at him. “I didn’t do anything wrong and threatening my job and warning me against doing nothing but having sex with your friend is ridiculous.” When she finally turned away, dismissing him, he called after her, “I’m sure Kate wouldn’t like this.” There was no point in having a conversation with her anymore, she was being completely unreasonable and he had to get back to work. Petre rolled his eyes and sighed heading back inside to do some damage control.

Despite the run in with Petre being totally coincidental he was glad it had occurred. The man seemed for all intents and purposes of high character. While he’d had very little actual interaction beforehand the only exception was here at Busboy’s, but through the year he’s seen him quite a bit around town here and there with Corbin. Given the Witch’s anti-social personality quirks Lu had attributed similar characteristics, but he can see he was wrong. He could appreciate the sincerity and protectiveness the human felt for Kate. Lu smiled and added, “I don’t have the pleasure of knowing Kate all that well. We only met once in passing at the Black Cat. I’m better acquainted with her roommate Leigha.” Amazingly a lightning bolt didn’t strike him as he comparatively described his relationship as an ‘acquaintance.’ The closer he became to Leigha the more he managed to worry about her connection to the Seer. Looking over at the door as it swung open he noticed another fae walk in, and gave him a nod. Directing his attention back to Petre as he spoke of Robyn he smiled. “Well if she happens to show up feel free to let her know I asked about her, and if she wishes to contact me I can be found at Solly’s. I might be of some use to her.” Given the hysterics she displayed last time he’d imagine it would be the last thing she would want, but he’s lived long enough to expect the unexpected. Either way he needed to make it understood that he wasn’t a threat if he hoped to learn more about her ‘gift.’ Standing up from the comfy chair he stretched. “Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. I don’t want to cause you any grief with your coworkers. I meant what I said earlier feel free to come to me with any concern.”

When Lu mentioned Leigha, he kept his expression neutral, not wanting to involve an outsider in his issues with Kate’s roommate. He couldn’t know how well the other knew Leigha, or his opinion of her, or Kate, on a personal level for that matter, so he kept his information limited. “Yeah I’ve met Leigha a few times, I don’t really know her like Kate though.” He doubted that would ever change. The blonde seemed determined to slot him into the asshole category without even giving him a chance. He knew there were those who frowned upon his sexual tastes, but Kate shared them and that’s all that should matter to her friend. However, Leigha appeared to think it was somehow his fault that that had come about. There was no point in trying to convince her otherwise either, he had tried that and all he received in return was threats. He respected her protective nature towards Kate, especially given her special circumstances, but Kate was a grown woman and could make her own decisions. “Yeah, I’ll, uh, let her know if I see her,” Petre wasn’t sure if he would follow through with that. Although, he would mention the man to Robyn for sure, just so she knew the Wolf was keen on finding her. He decided he would rely the message, but a warning with it as well. “Oh yeah, of course,” he’d almost forgotten that he was working and that having a seated chat with the customers was frowned upon. Thankfully, it wasn’t busy and his actions would most likely go unnoticed. “Thanks again, I’ll see ya around,” with that, he returned to his rounds thinking over their conversation.

The guilt he felt in being with her? The feelings he was beginning to develop that he had a feeling she didn’t return? It was probably a lot like him. He wanted to know about her, but the more he found out, the less he wanted to get involved, especially when it came to the Fae. She wouldn’t want to know the truth about his past, the things he’d been through, the wars, and the death, and the violence. Starving, and drugging, and loving Liliya the way he did, how she was his savior from it all. Besides, for all he knew, she knew about it all already. She could have read his mind, or his thoughts, or seen his dreams. He didn’t know how it worked and he knew some of it couldn’t be helped, but it didn’t mean that it didn’t feel intrusive. Those were things he kept private for a reason and she just slipped right it without any effort at all. The day they met it had been an accident, but what if it wasn’t always? What if she had been spying on him? He didn’t want to think about it. He didn’t want to think about anything anymore.

He was surprised the ride was free, but grateful. He’d already spent money he didn’t have on the ridiculous costume, which was removed the moment he walked through the door. The next stop was the kitchen, straight to the hard stuff. Beer was a waist of time at this point and if Liliya hadn’t have been lingering in his mind he might have chosen something stupid. Vegas had already proved to him that drugs weren’t an option anymore, but they sure worked well in the moment. He’d give anything to erase this moment, this night from his memory and start all over again. He should have told her no. He had a chance from the beginning, but he couldn’t do that to her. She made him feel like he didn’t have a choice in the matter, that only an asshole would say no because she needed him, but she didn’t need him. Not really. Well, she needed his dick. That seemed to matter.

The rest of the whiskey was shortly gone, and then came the rum. The first wasn’t enough to drown out the voices. Tears, smashed glass, blood, and more alcohol, apparently tonight required emptying his stash until he puked and passed out. Even that didn’t last long as his subconscious was still aware of his reality. Every time he saw the crash, it still felt real. Seeing her face that evening staring back at him like it was just yesterday didn’t help either. Kate was there, Kate saw her, but she’d already known anyway. He wished she hadn’t been there. He wished he didn’t have to see her and that she didn’t have to see him with Kate. Now that image was seared into his mind with all the rest of them and there would never be a way to erase it. If there were, he would have figured out how to get rid of all the ones that haunted him now, but there was only forgetting them for a few hours here and there before they came back to plague him in his dreams, in his nightmares, even when he was awake. Now Kate was a part of those memories, forever engrained, and for all he knew he’d be out of the picture tomorrow, or killed. Maybe that was for the best.
