Why do Dogs find Christmas Stressful?
Woof!! My name is Madigan and I am the Petswag UK resident Labrador and guest writer for the 2015 Pet Blogger of the Year Awards.
My owner and house mate Elisa has just popped to the shops and left her laptop on. She doesn’t know I’ve been peering over her shoulder as she browses, learning about this internet thing.. I am pretty sure she also does not know I can read.. This surfing thing is so much fun!!
Throughout the year when Elisa is away from her laptop I have been logging on and seeing what the internet has to offer for pets, and I have read tons of Pet Blogs all of them good in their own way, but I decided to share my absolute favourites with you today.. These five you could call the dogs.. ahem !!.
The best of the best are chosen for 1) Quality of content, 2) How routinely are they updated, 3) The amount of reader engagement (comments and social media shares etc) and 4) how long the blogs kept my paws glued to the keyboard.
Without further ado and in no particular order, the winners of the 2015 Pet Blogger of the Year Awards go to:
www.petethevet.com
Just like every other dog, I hate going to the vet. But if Pete was my vet, I would bound in every day! Pete’s mission in life is to communicate high quality, accurate information about animal health and welfare to as many people as possible, via newspapers (such as his weekly column in the Daily Telegraph),TV and radio and off course online. A must read for anyone interested in Pet Health.

I absolutely love this blog. Its written by two people - sorry, make that one person and one dog - in what must be one of first creative collaboration’s of its kind . A Spaniels Tail, written by Amanda and inspired by her lovable English cocker spaniel Lottie, princess and champion bog snorkeler. She covers all things doggy including articles, top tips, product and service reviews , and lots of photos! I really love this site.
www.phileasdogg.com
This website really opened my eyes to all the travel possibilities for dogs. The world, apparently is bigger than my local park! Here, I found out about Ted the surfing terrier, Monty the alpinist spaniel and Hope, a supervixen who likes to flaunt her curves on the beach despite living in Birmingham. Phileas Dogg is the leading authority on dog days out and dog friendly holiday accommodation. Now i have discovered that I am not the only pooch that can write, maybe I will send them a story of my own. If you are looking for holiday ideas which include your pet, Phileas Dogg should be your first stop.

Elisa often looks at Buzzfeed, which I find inane and too human focused. Enter the Bow Wow Times which offers all the Buzzfeed fun but for dogs! The articles posted here reveal the weird and wonderful canine world, with epic photos, quirky stories and definitive lists. Bow Wow Times is now also part of Holidog. Holidog is a leading platform for petsitting services and they also post packages to dogs called the monthly Happy Box, full of tasty treats and toys. (now I just need to figure out how I can get hold of Elisa’s purse to order a Happy Box of my very own ).

Never have I come across a dog with so many interesting things to say, Alfie is an Entlebucher Mountain Dog and regular diarist who first started posting in 2006. - Thats almost a decade of daily doggie opinion. Alfie tells it how it is from a dogs point of view. As self styled leader of the Pets Democratic Party Alfie has a view on most things and is happy to follow Petswag.co.uk in sniffing out a good deal. Alfiedog is a must read for the intellectual dog.

Special thanks to Paul for taking Elisa out of the house whilst I write and to Elisa, because without you I would have to get my own food, and take myself for walks and collect my own deposits in the park
Protecting your Dog at Christmas
Some tips from petswag.co.uk to ensure your and your pet have a wonderful safe Christmas.
FOOD
Chocolate, onions, nuts, blue cheese, fruit cakes, puddings and mince pies can all be toxic to dogs. Safe you and your pet a trip to the vet and keep your dog away from the type of foods we like to eat over the holidays.
DECORATIONS
Christmas decorations are designed to look attractive and beautiful, unfortunately this usually means they are also tempting to your furry friends. - often consuming an entire ribbon of tinsel in one go! We suggest keeping all tinsel, baubles and trees completely out of harms way.
PRESENTS
We put a lot of effort in hiding away potential problems but then wrap up a big box of chocolates to place under the tree. Although we can no longer tell what it is... our dogs can! Keep presents high enough and out of reach, and avoid having to make a trip to the vet on Xmas day.
Please note: Petswag.co.uk assumes no liability for the content of this page. This advice is not a substitute for a proper consultation with a vet and is only intended as a guide. Please contact your local veterinary practice for advice or treatment immediately if you are worried about your pet’s health - even if they are closed, they will always have an out of hours service available
