WHY SANSA WAS A BITCH

Re-watching Petyr die hurts. The more I watch the scene the more I’m shocked that this was the way he was dispatched. The following things continue to bother me…

Accusing Petyr of murder. Petyr already stood trial for the murder of Lysa Arryn and was acquitted. And it was Sansa’s testimony that secured his acquittal. Lord Royce, a judge at Petyr’s trial in the Vale, was present for his execution at Winterfell. How could he stand by and allow Sansa to claim Petyr did something she swore under oath didn’t happen? Sansa may feel untouchable but she shouldn’t be. If Petyr had to pay for his crime, she should have to pay for hers. And did Petyr really conspire with Lysa to kill Jon Arryn? Just because Lysa implicated Petyr in a moment of emotional hysteria doesn’t mean her words were true. As Sansa said herself, Lysa was a troubled woman who loved Petyr to an irrational extent. Her words to Petyr in front of Sansa were “I killed for you,” not “You killed for me.” But say, for argument’s sake, that Petyr did conspire to have Lysa kill Jon Arryn. Could it not be argued that Petyr was simply acting as a friend to Lysa, helping her with her own nefarious goals? He and Lysa had been life-long friends and if she begged him to get her poison then he probably would have. I’m just saying that there’s a ton of defensible behavior that Petyr never got a chance to explain.

Accusing Petyr of treason. Did Bran’s vision of Petyr holding a knife to Ned’s neck and saying “I warned you not to trust me,” really qualify as proof he was the one who caused Ned to be executed? And if the King kills his own hand, how can treason be committed by another? Didn’t Bran see Ned throttling Petyr as well? Taken out of context, both interactions between Ned and Petyr were suggestively aggressive. Couldn’t Petyr’s action be considered self-defense? And was it really treason to help her father find the information he was looking for? Was it really treason to try and ensure Robert’s true heir received the crown, not the evil and unworthy Joffrey? How was that fair and reasonable defense of the Realm treasonous? And regarding the Cat’s Paw dagger, no lie was told regarding its origins. Petyr told the truth that he lost the knife to Tyrion in a bet. It seems that if Bran wanted justice for his assassination attempt, he should be executing Jamie and Cersei without a trial, not Petyr. Cersei sent the assassin after Jamie disabled Bran. And honestly, why are Bran’s visions accepted as reasonable proof for a decision as important as an execution? He’s not been vetted out yet. Sure, he can say creepy things like “you looked beautiful that night” regarding Sansa’s wedding to Ramsay, but if his visions were really about bringing justice to the Starks, why didn’t he tell Sansa “I’m so sorry for what happened to you with Ramsay, but I’m glad you accepted Littlefinger’s apology considering the crucial role the Knights of the Vale played in reclaiming Winterfell and exacting justice upon the entire Bolton house”? Bran is shady and even though he is Sansa’s brother, the information he chooses to share with her hasn’t been stellar.

Accusing Petyr of betraying her. Really Sansa? If you felt he’d betrayed you that badly with the Boltons and you weren’t accepting his apologies, why not kill him at Mole’s Town? Who’s really the snake in the grass here? She begged for his help at the Battle of the Bastards and then kept him as a close advisor at Winterfell afterwards. Petyr did nothing but stick by her side and have her back at every turn. He didn’t pit sister against sister – he gave exceptionally neutral advice to Sansa regarding the potential threat of Arya. And Arya presented herself as a threat without any coaching from Petyr. Petyr played on Arya’s already shady and threatening attitude towards him and Sansa by setting her up to find information that was readily available already. He didn’t force Sansa to defend herself weakly to Arya’s accusations. Arya chose to disbelieve her sister because Sansa had an ineffective argument in her defense and that’s not Petyr’s fault. Sansa chose to alienate Arya and that’s not Petyr’s fault. He also had no involvement in her distrust of Jon upon being reunited. Sansa refused to trust either sibling and that’s on her. Petyr simply warned her to stay vigilant at all times to ANY enemy that could be undermining her. If anything, Petyr demonstrated more loyalty to her than she demonstrated to either of her siblings.

Do the accused in Westeros have a right to a defense? What about trial by combat? How incredibly unfair was it to consider that farce of a scene a trial? He had no chance because Sansa had already made her mind up. It seems that had she been fair about it and allowed him a defense, she would have been put to task herself for her own culpability in the crimes she accused Petyr of committing. It seems to me that she used Petyr and then bullied him with the help of her not-so-stable siblings. In fact, it seems that killing Petyr did nothing but remove the only witness to her own potentially treasonous actions. Not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vale could be considered as treasonous as anything because Jon almost died. If he had died, would Bran and Arya have made her stand trial for treason? Just because he didn’t die, does that make her refusal to assist him when he needed help the most righteous?

Was Petyr her ally or enemy? It seems to me like Petyr getting the letter Sansa sent from King’s Landing was more a demonstration of loyalty to Sansa than proof he was trying to pit sister against sister. He was trying to remove anything that would’ve casted doubt on her. Knowing it existed and making sure it was removed so no one could find it helped Sansa. The fact that Arya broke into his room and found the hidden scroll could be argued wasn’t part of any plan and was Arya’s manipulative act alone. Petyr did nothing but give solid advice to Sansa the entire time he knew her (excepting the Bolton advice). Sansa had her opportunity to kill him at Mole’s Town and didn’t. That suggested she truly accepted his apology, believing that he didn’t try to set her up for the abuse she endured. He was willing to die for her then because he felt such deep remorse for his mistake, but not at the time of his execution because he’d already been atoning for his sins.

Petyr deserved so much more from Sansa before he died. He saved her from Cersei and Lysa and he saved her siblings, Arya from Tywin Lannister and Jon at the Battle of the Bastards, and even saved Winterfell. He didn’t pit sister against sister with her mother and aunt, or with herself and Arya. He may have initiated chaos in the realm that brought about the War of the Five Kings, but since that inception he’d fallen in love with Sansa and redirected his focus onto her. If nothing else, his S7E3 admission to her that he wanted to see her safe and happy was the purest truth of his character. How could she hear him say that and dismiss him as such? All he wanted to know is what it is that she wanted that she did not have. He gave her neutral advice right up to the advice about Brienne (who I think she sent away because Brienne would not have stood by and allowed the murder of Petyr, even though she distrusted and disliked him). Sansa was a bitch for allowing the paranoid and unvetted gossip of her siblings to sway her conscience and convince her that killing Petyr was her wisest recourse. Honor did not demand his death. I hope guilt and remorse haunt her always.

It’s been a minute but I just found this so I thought I’d reply. You did read my assertion that Petyr didn’t pit sister against sister and that he “played on” his suspicions about Arya. He exposed Arya, Doing so didn’t pit sister against sister - it exposed that one sister had already pitted herself firmly in position. Petyr didn’t pit them against each other, he just figured out the truth and exposed it. Can’t blame him for Arya’s bullshit, so don’t kill the messenger. 

Look at it this way: Sansa coulda been doing something shady behind Arya’s back, but she wasn’t. Unlike Arya, who was exposed as doing something shady.

I stumbled (or Tumbld) across this list of prompts and for no reason other than being bored, decided to answer all of them and quite honestly too. That was probably dumb of me, but whatever. Here ya go, if you’re so inclined...

1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk? More milk (vanilla soy or almond milk though).

2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day? Yes.

3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? The corner of the page, usually.

4: how do you take your coffee/tea? Mostly I prefer a good dark roast just plain by itself, but somedays I enjoy a bit of flavored creamer, like Oreo.

6: do you keep plants? I try but they usually die, both inside and outside my house.

7: do you name your plants? Never have, but maybe if I did, they wouldn’t die on me like they do. Thanks for the idea!

I was WAY too into some of the guys I liked when I was a teenager. Like WAY too into them. I feel bad for them now, in retrospect.

21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces. My favorite bag is a highly functional wallet-on-a-string type bag with enough room for my cigarettes, lighter and keys.

48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? Being called a boy. And no, I’d give my left leg to be mistaken for a man today. I think its laughable how badly I wanted to be “girly” and “feminine” when I was young. But to credit myself, I didn’t really know how bad of a choice I was making.

49: do you like buying CDs and records? what was the last one you bought? Yep, I do, but I worked in the music industry and didn’t have to buy CDs or records for a minute - they all were free as a perk of the biz. The last CD I can remember buying I think was George Winston’s Thanksgiving, for a Christmas party a few years back. Worth every penny.

50: what’s an odd thing you collect? NSync figurines/bobbleheads/action figures. Or books. In this day and age, collecting books seems odd. 

51: think of a person. what song do you associate with them? Umbrella, by Rhianna. 

52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far? Not big into memes. But I’m old - like REALLY old - so forgive me. PASS.

53: have you ever watched the rocky horror picture show? heathers? beetlejuice? pulp fiction? what do you think of them? RHPS: No, not in its entirety. Looks like fun though. Heathers: No, but Christian Slater is the best (love Mr. Robot). Beetlejuice: Yes, but I wasn’t super-impressed. Michael Keaton can be annoying a lot of the time. Pulp Fiction: Yes, one of the best movies of all time. Endlessly quotable with stand-out performances by many awesome actors. Tarantino’s best, by far.

54: who’s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? Me, after the final episode of GoT aired (vs the hysterical look after the episode when they killed off Littlefinger).

55: what’s the most dramatic thing you’ve ever done to prove a point? Wrote a letter to the editor of my local newspaper calling out local law enforcement. That decision haunted me for probably 10 years and still occasionally gets brought up. I’ll never do that again.

56: what are some things you find endearing in people? Phobias and OCD. I know that may seem patronizing but I find those quirks adorable.

58: who’s the wine mom and who’s the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why? I’m the vodka aunt - my girlfriends and I were coined the Bottle Girls due to our propensity to bring our own bottles to parties (them Bacardi, me 100 proof Smirnoff). I don’t know anyone who drinks wine.

59: what’s your favorite myth? The bible’s packed full of them. I find people’s adherence to that book fascinating. So perhaps it’s the ludicrous origin story about an all-powerful being FIRST making man and woman equal and alike but then actually giving in to the whiny whimpering of the power-deprived man and banishing the equally powerful woman from his life to create a new woman from his rib, to be subservient and subordinate to him always. Ugh, really? But no, it gets worse... Then, this all-powerful deity puts ALL KNOWLEDGE into the delicious fruit of a common tree and then warns their newly created humans away from ever eating that fruit. When the woman finally does eat the fruit and gain knowledge (apparently giving her a distinct advantage over the less-educated man), the deity banishes them both from paradise and afflicts the woman with painful childbirth as a punishment. Maybe before then, the all-powerful being was considering men for the incubators of our species and changed then their mind and gave women the burden in a fit of irritation? Oh it all sounds so petty, like pissy five-year-olds rule the universe.

60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves? Unless song lyrics are considered modern poetry, no, not so much.

61: what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever given? the stupidest one you’ve ever received? Given? Maybe a bottle of vodka to someone in recovery (I didn’t know - I swear.) Received? Maybe a pair of skiing gloves. I haven’t skied in over 30 years.

62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind? Nope, but if I did, it would be white-cranberry/peach. That stuff is amazing.

63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? I am fussy, but in a very untidy way. All my books are grouped by subject and all my CDs are alphabetized and grouped by genre, but storage of them both is sloppy at best.

64: what color is the sky where you are right now? Sorta greyish-white (it’s overcast today in my part of California). 

65: is there anyone you haven’t seen in a long time who you’d love to hang out with? Yeah, my mom. But she’s dead so I don’t know if that counts.

66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? All white roses with babys-breath accents.

67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? Fine. I like gloomy days.

68: what’s winter like where you live? Cool and sometimes wet. It rarely freezes and never snows. But I can be in snow in about two hours if I want.

69: what are your favorite board games? Oh wow. There’s so many. Probably Parcheesi/Sorry is #1. Then maybe Life or Clue. I love the new Cards Against Humanity and will always love Balderdash. But I almost forgot Sequence! That game’s the best. This is a tough question to answer.

70: have you ever used a ouija board? Yes, and it didn’t use me.

71: what’s your favorite kind of tea? Diet peach tea from Snapple.

72: are you a person who needs to note everything down or else you’ll forget it? Usually, it helps to have a written reminder.

73: what are some of your worst habits? Well, eating excessively and smoking cigarettes rank up there pretty high. I also correct people’s grammar and spelling obsessively. That can get annoying.

74: describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns. Quite attractive but too convinced about it, they bank on their looks and are sometimes overly confident regarding the perks their looks provide them. Looks fade, personality evolves.

75: tell us about your pets! Oh I have many... My golden retriever is a cancer survivor. I tumbled one of my cats in the dryer, accidentally. Another of my cats has pica (is addicted to eating paper). My chicken is lonely because her two buddies recently died. 79: what’s one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? Agreed to play the card game Euchre with me, even though they hate card games and pretty much people (the game requires four players). 

80: what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why? I think the color is called Sage Green but my boyfriend insists it’s Institutional Green. And yes, I picked the color because I thought it was neutral and matched a lot of my bedding and accessories. Now, I think it makes my white skin look sickly. Bad choice. Need to repaint soon.

81: describe one of your friend’s eyes using the most abstract imagery you can think of. Your eyes are like two limpid pools of 10W40... (I stole that from the song Kisses in the Sunset by the Meatmen).

82: are/were you good in school? When I put an effort in, yes.

83: what’s some of your favorite album art? Bronski Beat’s Age of Consent, New Order’s 12″ single for Blue Monday, Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, Nirvana’s Nevermind and Bad Company’s Dangerous Age. 

84: are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones? I’ve been planning on getting a tattoo for 30 years... Dunno if it’ll ever happen though.

86: do you like concept albums? which ones? Yes! Pink Floyd’s The Wall is my all-time favorite but Negativland’s Escape From Noise is phenomenal too and shouldn’t be missed. 

87: what are some movies you think everyone should watch at least once in their lives? Well, The Wall (Pink Floyd), and Kalifornia (Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis and David Duchovny). And probably Wall-E and Up too. Oh and Pixar’s short Piper, for obvious reasons.

88: are there any artistic movements you particularly enjoy? Like social movements or physical movements? Uhm, PASS.

89: are you close to your parents? Nope. Their both dead and I have no idea where (or even if) either of them are buried.

94: who was the last person you know to have a birthday? My ex-best friend and roommate’s birthday was three days ago. I sent her a happy day text and she ignored me. Sounds about right...

95: what are your plans for this weekend? Weekend is almost over but I plan to hang Xmas lights today when I’m done with this pointless exercise.

96: do you install your computer updates really quickly or do you procrastinate on them a lot? I install them. Why procrastinate? Seems dumb.

98: when’s the last time you went hiking? did you enjoy it? It’s been too long, honestly. I love hiking and need to do it more often.

And going back five years would give me the chance to do-over some of my more dumb decisions - like answering this incredibly long prompt without being asked to do so!

I’ll never stop. 

I ‘ship Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark, GoT) and Aidan Gillen (Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, GoT) and even post an RPF story about them here on Tumblr and AO3. Before them, I ‘shipped all of N’Sync with all of N’Sync. 

And guess why I love RPF? Cuz it’s LEGAL and fanfiction is NOT. 

In the US, at least, our First Amendment assures us the right to parody any publicly known figure, even in a sexual manner (thanks to the awesome Larry Flynt for re-affirming that in his famous Supreme Court case). But US copyright laws make it very clear that writing fanfiction about someone else’s characters - without their consent - is ILLEGAL. So, unless George R.R. Martin gives me the OK, I can’t write about Sansa and Petyr - they’re not my creations. But I can write till my fingers fall off about the actors that portray them. 

I appropriately disclaim my FICTION as being exactly that: made up in my head fantasy. I also am clear that I don’t know my subjects or anything about their lives and that I respect their right to privacy and happiness. My intention is not to offend my subjects - they should consider it a compliment I pay them so much attention. 

So, to recap, I’m a sworn RPF writer because it’s completely legal and its complimentary, not offensive. For those of you who prefer illegally expropriating other people’s property for fan-fiction, well, you surely should climb down off that high-horse you’ve been riding around on. It’s your approach that is morally questionable and legally prohibited, not mine. 

JUST A LITTLE POSTSCRIPT... 

 PS. RPF must be about famous people, not you or your friends. Keep known subjects out of your stories unless they’ve provided explicit consent (like asked you to write a story for them about them and the famous person or character they’re attracted to). 

And never try to meet or coerce in any way the famous people you write about. Don’t be a psycho, have fun and be kind to one another. Seriously people, does this have to be said?

I like explaining the obviously reciprocal sexual chemistry in the relationship of my OTP so I thought I’d share. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my take on Sansa’s feelings for Petyr. Thanks ~ petyrspiper

Well, I believe Sansa fell in love with Petyr because she was coming of age and that made the following two things extremely unavoidable: 

1) She idealized and romanticized relationships with men, and 

2) She took ownership of her feminine sexual power.

Often, young women don’t make the most “safe” or “sane” decisions when they choose their lustful “first crushes.” Look at Sansa herself, with her over-romaticized crush on Joffrey. He taught her an important lesson when he burst the bubble of her “prince charming” fantasy. 

Sansa’s exposure to the pernicious ways of men at her young age gave her much to consider. She was almost raped in Kings Landing, and eventually was married off like chattel to “the Imp” (who, although frightening, socially repugnant and considerably older than her, treated her with respect). She learned to distrust men and their intentions with her, because all men demonstrated power over her and a desire to control her. Her powerlessness frustrated her and she resented being a pawn for them to toy with. 

But then there was Petyr. Not only did he step in and save her time and again, every time he did, he let HER set the pace with their interactions, and gave her an opportunity to grow and empower herself, and to be informed and make her own choices. Petyr was willing to give up some of his power to her, and he did so more and more each time they interacted.

At first, this was intellectual and intentional, but as his attraction to her increased, his acquiescence of power became compulsive and continued unchecked, against his better judgment. Soon, he was killing people - her relative, his own sham of a spouse - to protect her, and doing so in her presence. He fell so hard for her that he soon wasn’t playing his cards close to his chest anymore, ultimately revealing the secret to her that made him most vulnerable: love made him a very weak man.

When Sansa discovered this, that she was the object of his affections, not her aunt or even her mother, she wasn’t repulsed by it, afraid of him, or at all disinterested in his interest, like has been suggested by so many. Instead, Sansa’s attraction to Petyr was given fuel to grow - and grow it did, steadily.

A young woman learning she has sexual power over men experiences a zeitgeist in her pubescent development. Extremely powerful crushes can, and often do, follow - often with the teacher of the lesson. Sansa learning that she possessed this power over a powerful man like Petyr propelled her maturation into womanhood on the spot.

In the show, when Petyr comes to Sansa’s room after the trial and asks her “Why did you lie for me?” Sansa might as well have just opened her bed sheets for him right then. She knew she had him.

Did you see the way she looked at him over her hands methodically sewing in her lap (that AMAZING black dress in the same material HE wears that she dons at the end of the episode) when she confidently asserted to him “I know what you want…”? OMG her lust for him just oozed from every pore of her being. (this picture does NOT do the scene justice at all!)

And he replied back, curious, but terrified, “Do you?” The way those two tossed that question and answer back and forth throughout the series was PAINFULLY nuanced.

The very next scene between them after that exquisite sexual tension had Sansa making her grand entrance down the staircase in the Eyrie, in that Petyr-inspired black dress she’d been sewing, with her newly dyed black hair, coyly glancing at a gobsmacked Petyr and sexily purring “Shall we go?”

Yeah Sansa. We know you wanted it. You couldn’t wait to travel for many days and NIGHTS with Lord Baelish, from the Eyrie to Winterfell. When you two stopped for some food, you drank ale with him and inquired why “men like ale.”

“It gives some men courage,” Petyr replied.

Then the flirtatious Sansa immediately asked, without skipping a beat, “Well, does it give YOU courage, Lord Baelish?” Petyr smiled over his mug but didn’t get a chance to reply to her obvious come-on before Brienne interrupted. Shame, shame, shame… That was ALL Sansa on that one. She wasn’t being subtle at all. Maybe the ale was giving her courage.

Then at Winterfell, she was shocked and upset that Petyr was leaving for Kings Landing, not staying by her side, where she preferred him to be. Did you see her look at him while he told the story of her aunt Lyanna? Wow. Complete infatuation.

Her last ditch effort to get him to stay was her not-so-subtle saying to him “I’ll be a married woman by the time you return.” It was the only way a “proper young lady” could possibly offer her virginity to a noble man like Petyr (because really, he’s WELL aware she’s set to be married AND technically, ALREADY married, just unconsummated - so her saying that serves absolutely ZERO purpose other than to be an offer of her virginity). Strangely, he smiles, knowing exactly what she just offered him, but turns and leaves anyway, denying her that which they both lust after so desperately. He again, is showing her respect that most VIEWERS miss as they eventually get so wrapped up wrongfully thinking he PURPOSEFULLY left her to be raped by Ramsay.

But she IS raped repeatedly by Ramsay and Petyr does NOT return like the knight in shining armor she had come to depend upon him to be for her. This devastates her. She not only resents him for leaving her there in GENERAL, but resents him as a lover AND as her failed Knight. Yeah, if she felt like he was just a creepy asshole or a manipulative uncle, not a man she actually was in love with, she wouldn’t have bothered to actually MEET him face to face for an apology in Mole’s Town. She wouldn’t have NEEDED him to hear what Ramsay did to her. She wouldn’t have HAD to ask him three or four times if he knew what Ramsay did to her. If she was just angry and not brokenhearted too, she would’ve asked once, probably by raven, not waited for an answer, and then had him assassinated. No, her actions at Moletown were ONLY LOGICAL if she was in love. Only the brokenhearted need understanding BEFORE vengeance. Too many viewers flew right over this obvious point. 

She crushed hard on Petyr. She expected him to return from Kings Landing and save her from Ramsay. When he didn’t she was devastated. Not just because she was being brutalized but because he was her knight in shining armor and he didn’t rescue her. Because she thought he loved her and he didn’t rescue her. He tried to make up for it bringing the Knights of the Vale to the Battle of the Bastards but that saved Jon, not her. She never forgave him entirely for not being there when she needed him with Ramsay. Nothing he could do after that seemed to inspire that lust in her again. You could see how brokenhearted she was at Mole’s Town. It wasn’t just anger. It was anger and sadness. She realized the Knight in Shining Armor fantasy is just as much a bullshit ideal as Prince Charming.

Sansa loved Petyr the way a student loves a teacher. She loved him the way an ingenue loves a director. She loved him because he taught her she had power she didn’t know she possessed. But once she recognized her feminine power and knew that the Knight was a bullshit ideal, her fantasy that included him faded. So she killed him. I think she should’ve fucked him first though. Maybe she did? Maybe that’s why he got so obsessed, right?

Hopefully GRRM has more in store for Petyr and Alayne than D&D did. D&D did them a horrible disservice twisting them into an exquisite tension of erotic suggestion and then abandoning them in a fury of substandard writing.

Mad props to the excellent acting skills of Aidan Gillen though for carrying a complex character through to the bittersweet end and to Sophie Turner for doing a great job at playing Sansa so early in her career.

These two were an awesome pair. For the viewers who missed this, I feel bad. It really was a highlight of the show. Maybe to appreciate the power of their relationship, one must be a woman who had a similarly transformative experience in her lifetime and therefore can recognize the signs that it is happening on screen. I’m unsure. Regardless, it was one of my favorite things about GoT and I’m damn happy it was part of the story.

Peace. And here’s to hoping none of us mummify before Season 9 makes it to its air date! LOL

Let’s see. I’m German with a touch of Irish. I have auburn hair. Super pale skin with a million bajillion freckles everywhere. Green eyes. I’m short, just 5ft. Naturally blonde haired, blue eyes. Quite fair (but do tan fairly easily!). Not hugely tall, although I am the shortest in my family who are fairly tall (my father is 6ft 4, and my mother is 5 ft 8).

Im probably stony Dornish then, so House Dayne, House Yronwood or House Fowler. Or a Lannister at a pinch (twins now run in the family…)

Well, since I haven’t read the books I’m not that up on what the genetic stock is of every House. 

I think that the Dragon-Riders (I can’t spell their last name and I’m too lazy to go look it up right now) have violet eyes and silver hair, so I can’t be part of their clan. 

The Martells of Dorne must have rich, olive-toned skin to live in the desert so I can’t be part of their clan either. 

I remember Ned Stark making a big deal over the Baratheon clan having all brown hair and the Lannisters all being blondes (except for Tyrion, strangely), so I’d be more likely a Lannister than a Baratheon, for sure. 

But the Lannisters all have brown eyes (because they’re so full of shit? possibly) so I don’t know if I’d be a Lannister. 

Maybe the Tyrells of the Reach because Lancel had a beautiful head of blonde hair, but Margery was a brunette. I dunno.

The Tullys of the Riverlands are all brown-haired and mousy, as seem to be the Arryns of the Vale, the Boltons, the Mormonts, the Freys, and even the Starks (except for Sansa). 

The Ironborn are kind of a toss-up. Always being wet, it’s hard to tell what they look like. Maybe that would be me. 

I’m blond haired and green-eyed and a Cancer (a water-sign) and on the stocky side (OK, I’m fat). I’m also brash, quite a drinker, a fighter, and a recluse. I think the Ironborn fit my personality well too. I’d really prefer being some long lost second cousin of Petyr Baelish’s but hey, he’s tall, brunette and super-smooth. We’re nothing alike. But I still love him!

I know it’s been a minute and a lot of us have seen like every GOT opinion video on YouTube - especially those about Littlefinger and his poorly written demise - but this gem somehow escaped me until today. I was so impressed with the author’s ideas for alternative story lines (plus his spot-on condemnation for the actual course of action taken) that I felt compelled to share here with the Petyr Baelish lovers and Aidan Gillen fans I know and love.

Awards Season RPF Update

Thank all of you readers who are making my foray into RPF for Sophie and Aidan worthwhile. I wanted to fill you in on my intentions: Awards Season is planned as a 15 chapter story and, as you know, I’m only five chapters in (what I’m considering “Act 1″). I’ve had my outline for all 15 chapters since I finished the rough drafts of chapters 1-5, but I have yet to pen chapters 6-15. Hence, I’m aiming for mid to late-July to get chapter 6 posted.

TITLE: Awards Season, The Interview

Sophie couldn’t stop pulling on the edge of her dress. Gazing nervously out her limo's tinted window she wondered how much longer this drive would take. Downtown Los Angeles didn't foster quick trips anywhere, but this slow crawl towards the Microsoft Theater was bordering on ridiculous. Her being prone to over-thinking didn't help matters either.

Was Aidan already there? Would they walk the Red Carpet together? Would the paparazzi hound her relentlessly regarding the dress? Would people like the dress? Would Aidan like the dress? Had she miscalculated the risks of going this far? Would tonight be one of the greatest of her life? Or would it go down in flames, remembered as a mortifying disaster?

She ran a manicured fingertip around the outline of one of the mockingbirds stitched into the skirt of her dress, trying to ease her anxiety. With her other hand, she clicked her phone on and off, on and off, on and off. She was still hoping to see a reply from Aidan to any of the texts she'd sent him since they Face Timed, but there continued to be no messages for her. Doubt and insecurity clouded her mind. Frustrated, she decided to reach out to him one last time and the phone shook slightly in her hand as she typed. She tried to calm herself by regulating her breathing, but it wasn't really working. She'd thrown herself headlong into this crazy plan and was past the point of return. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she pinpointed her focus and tried to breathe steadily. She hit the "send" button and felt she might hyperventilate.

Suddenly, a dry voice crackled over the limo's intercom. It was her driver with good news. They had arrived. Relieved, she thanked him and scooted closer to the back door in anticipation. When she went to put her phone away into her tiny bejeweled clutch though, it buzzed. She eagerly opened her messages, presuming it was Aidan finally getting back to her, but she was wrong. It was Maisie.

So... What'd u decide to wear? I'm dying 2 C. Send a pic!

Sophie sighed sadly then snapped a selfie. Maisie was sure to give Sophie an unfiltered opinion. Sophie was ready for it.

Here ya go. U like? #SLAY?

Maisie didn't disappoint.

As she hung up, the door beside her swung open. Sophie took a deep breath of courage and stepped out of the limo, one long shapely leg at at time. Temporarily blinded by a hundred cameras flashing at once, she had to squint to see ahead of her. She paused to gather her balance, stand tall, and straighten her dress. When she acclimated she saw Shona, Aidan's matronly manager standing before her. Shona's eyes dragged over Sophie from head to toe. She had a slightly puzzled look on her face when she finally made eye contact with her, but it didn't stop Sophie from releasing a heavy sigh of relief. Besides Aidan himself, Shona was the next best person to see upon her arrival. Sophie was excited but stayed composed. She knew if she just allowed things to organically unfold from that point on, everything was going to be alright.

"Sophie, my dear," gushed the tiny woman, "you look splendid! Absolutely smashing! How are you?"

"I'm great Shona," Sophie replied and then grabbed the full of her skirt and lifted it up just enough to avoid tripping over it. "It's good to see you again! Thanks for offering me a hand. I really appreciate it."

Shona downplayed her gesture by insisting, "Oh, it's my pleasure, my pleasure entirely. I need to ask a favor of you though."

Sophie nodded, listening.

"Would you mind, terribly, walking with Aidan down the Carpet?"

Just hearing his name put a wide smile on Sophie's face and a distinct twinkle in her eyes. "Of course I wouldn't mind," she answered, trying to sound nonchalant. "Has he been waiting long?"

"Not at all, dear," Shona assured. "We've only been here a few minutes. But Aidan needs a walking companion and I thought you would be the perfect one. You're a formidable pair, you know."

"Yes," she agreed with a mischievous grin. "Quite formidable."

Shona smiled back at Sophie and began to lead her through the crowd at the edge of the Carpet. Sophie wondered why Shona hadn't said anything yet about the dress; she'd surely seen it in all its glory when she sized her up. Instead, Shona just prattled on about how proud she was of her client's nomination and how deserving he was of the honor. Of course, Sophie agreed but she barely paid any attention to what Shona was saying. Her mind was entirely on the dress. Perhaps Maisie was wrong about how people were going to react to it. She presumed she'd have multiple opportunities to explain herself before having to face Aidan in it, but any hopes of practicing her elevator speech on the paparazzi seemed unlikely now.

The spot Aidan waited with Meg for Shona and Sophie to meet them was right off the Carpet and only about 50 feet or so from the curb. Aidan had his back to them, so he was unaware of their approach. Just as Shona was going to announce her, Sophie put a pointed finger to her lips, asking her to stay silent. Shona nodded knowingly and mimed a zipping of her lip so Sophie's surprise wouldn't be ruined. Sophie straightened herself, took a deep breath and then reached out and tapped Aidan gently on his shoulder. It felt like slow motion as he turned around and set his eyes upon her for the first time in well over six months. When his eyes locked onto hers, she wasn’t disappointed with his reaction.

"Hi there handsome," she said in her sultry tone, teasing an idea of what was just below the surface of her cool demeanor. Aidan was too awestruck by her beauty to immediately reply. He stood frozen, mouth agape, and stuttered his hello to her. She couldn't help but chuckle and then demure, averting her eyes for fear they would expose her deepest desires to him. He finally broke the tension of the awkward moment by outstretching his arms and pulling her into a deep, hearty hug. She returned his embrace tightly, so happy to be touching him again. He felt wonderful. Sophie moved her mouth right up against his ear and whispered to him, seductively, "I'm so glad we're finally together."

Her breath on his ear and her voice in his head sent shivers through Aidan's body. He was amazed she would be so forward. She impressed him so much. Swimming in a sea of thoughts and feelings, he struggled to convert any of them into coherent words. He simply hung onto their embrace and held her far tighter and longer than reasonably appropriate. Just as their companions were beginning to notice and question what they were witnessing, he cleared his throat and found his voice.

“My dearest Sophie,” he started as their bodies reluctantly separated, “You've grown into such an impressive young woman. You look absolutely radiant. That gown is gorgeous on you. Let me see it.”

This was the moment she had been dreading and desiring so much simultaneously. Sophie blushed with pride and obliged him, twirling around in her designer gown to impart it's full effect. She was ecstatic that his feedback, insofar, had been positive. After all, it was he that she dressed to impress and only his opinion that mattered to her. As she spun around, Aidan's eyes grew big and an astonished look of fear came over his face. When she curtsied politely after showing herself off, a gasp escaped from his mouth and he asked her, incredulous, “Are those what I think they are on your dress?”

“You mean the birds?” Sophie replied innocently.

"Yes," said Aidan, looking uncomfortable and awkward, "I mean the birds."

“Aren’t they great?” she gushed, hoping desperately that she'd hadn't misread his reaction. She then dropped her voice to a whisper and leaned towards Aidan to add, "I was thinking of you when I got it, you know. I really hope you like it."

Aidan didn't know what to say. It felt like a practical joke was being played on him. He quickly looked over his shoulder, sure he would see the paparazzi poised to wreak havoc, but no cameras were there. Scanning around them, he saw no one taking particular interest in her or the dress, and momentarily, that relieved him. But he didn't see how attention could be avoided if they walked the Carpet together. He was panicking. “I don’t know Sophie," he stuttered. "The dress is beautiful, for sure, but it's a bit, uh, a bit risky, don't you think?”

“The birds?” Sophie asked, suddenly faltering with doubt.

Aidan didn’t reply.

“Start walking, you two,” Meg called out from behind them. Sophie was now self-conscious and awkward though. Without her confidence in place, she worried the long walk would be a disaster. She looked to Aidan for a life-line but he provided none. He looked embarrassed and adverse to walking with her. Still, she had to persevere whether Aidan liked her dress or not. As they began their walk, reporters started calling out their names to get their attention for photos and potential interviews. Shona walked ahead of them to vet out which news outlets would best cover the story of her client's nomination, and soon she had a short list of acceptable stops.

“Aidan, Sophie!” shouted Juliana Rancic from E! Entertainment News. Shona nodded her approval to them, so the co-stars moved aside to greet the diminutive reporter and her camera crew. Their first interview was underway and they both were nearly nauseous with nervousness.

Juliana spoke first. “You two look fabulous tonight. Who are you wearing?”

Aidan tried hard not to roll his eyes while Sophie answered, “I’m in Elie Saab and Aidan, I don’t know. Who are you wearing Aidan?”

“Hugo Boss, of course,” he smirked, as though he was their brand spokesman.

“Of course,” Sophie and Juliana echoed in unison, and then laughed, giving each other knowing looks of approval.

“Your gown is so unique Sophie. It's gorgeous," Juliana praised. "But those birds, are they mockingbirds?”

Sophie replied, trying to sound confident, but her words seemed forced and fell flat. “Yes, I think they are. Aren’t they marvelous? They’re what attracted me to the dress in the first place.”

“Well, isn’t the mockingbird the sigil of Littlefinger’s House, the character you play Aidan?”

“Technically, no, it’s not,” Aidan answered into the microphone that had been pushed in front of him. “House Baelish doesn’t really exist as Petyr has no living relatives and no heirs.”

“But the mockingbird,” Juliana pressed on. “It’s a symbol associated with your character, true?”

“It is,” Aidan acquiesced. “But I’d venture to say that the birds on Sophie’s dress look more like the falcons of House Arryn, not mockingbirds.”

“Sophie? Any comment?”

Flustered, Sophie blurted out the only thing she could think of to save face, “I just got the dress because I loved it, that’s all.”

“Well that’s enough,” Juliana conceded. “Thank you, Sophie. And thank you too Aidan. Good luck in there tonight.”

“Yes, thank you,” Aidan replied, nodding. He’d almost forgotten about the Emmy award he was nominated for with Sophie looking so amazing, right by his side, and with all the talk about fashion and mockingbirds. His stomach was in knots. He absolutely loathed the Red Carpet.

Suddenly he felt Sophie’s fingers searching his out and intertwining with them. Too petrified to shake them off, he kept them threaded amongst his own, soft and cool. Her fingernails scratched the inside of his palm and he looked to her, confused. She just smiled and used her other hand to wave at the crowds. They were holding hands walking down the red carpet and a million flashes were going off in their faces. What on earth was Sophie doing?

“Keep walking,” Meg reminded them again. She said nothing about their fingers.

But the comment was added to my “I Expected Haters, Fer Sure...” post, so maybe she’s just the 18th hater I was searching for before Sunday.

Either way, I love it when people say ANYTHING, bad or good, because it means they’re reading. 

And eventually, all that reading might teach them how to spell properly. Until that happens though, trolling-with-typos won’t be hurting my feelings. I find the intellectually challenged more comedic than caustic.

AWARDS SEASON, CHAPTER 4: The Restaurant

They didn’t even make it through the first course before the argument started. Aidan was mortified when their server asked them to either calm down or kindly step outside. Other guests were staring and his familiar face didn’t help the situation. If they were going to fight, he preferred to do it at home, away from prying eyes, sharp ears and smartphone cameras.

Camille was such a hothead though. She never took his celebrity into consideration when they had issues in public. It took much more effort than he liked to expend keeping her in check during her emotional outbursts. But lately he’d felt he could easily match her level of intensity and unleash months of pent up discontent towards her. It was a huge challenge to stay calm but he stood his ground and remained stoic and cool. He never let his guard down around her, ever.

“I won’t Aidan,” she stated firmly, just above a whisper. “I won’t do this anymore.”

He didn’t want to engage her but he too was unwilling to do whatever “this” was. He pled with her silently, his soft grey eyes begging her to stop making a scene. 

But she was beyond caring.

With a defiant glare, she pushed back from their table and snatched up her purse, then turned with a huff and stomped out of the restaurant like a obstinate child, mumbling obscenities under her breath as she pushed her way through the door.

“I won’t follow you this time Camille!” he called out, but only to the exhaust trails of her afterburners. A heavy sigh released from deep within his chest and his forehead sought refuge in his palm, open receptively in front of him. This time, he really meant it. He didn’t care if she walked five kilometers back to his estate. She could call a taxi. Or an Uber. This time, he wasn’t chasing after her to make everything alright. This time, he truly agreed with her; there would be no more.

“Would you like the check sir?”

Aidan was reluctant to raise his head knowing there was a room full of diners staring at him. Instead, he nodded in defeat without looking up and the bill was slid in front of him by his young waiter. Upon reading it, a cynical laugh escaped from him and he sat up straight again, taking it all in. 

No wonder she insisted on that damned bottle of Napa Valley Bordeaux - it cost over €300. Oh, that was so Camille. What a nightmare.

He’d knew he’d rather walk nude down any Belfast row than abandon a bottle of wine that expensive so he made damn sure to pour what was left of it into their glasses before he handed off his credit card. 

“Cash me out,” he said gruffly to his waiter and then began gulping down the rich elixir. He polished off his glass, provided his signature on the receipt, and started to finish hers. The vintage wasn’t a bad one but he drank it like it was a boxed wine and he was in college; he couldn’t chug it fast enough.

As soon as her glass was empty too, he stood and pulled a €50 note to leave on the table. Warmed by the alcohol, Aidan swayed a bit while gathering his belongings to leave and his attentive waiter came right to his side, offering assistance cordially. Aidan waved him off instead with a half-assed apology in consolation.

“She can pick a good wine,” he confessed. “But apparently she can’t pick a good man.” A loud burp followed his apology and then a mischievous but satisfied smile spread across his face. As he looked out over the crowd he’d been fearful of only moments before, he realized none of them were looking at him. He chuckled at the irony while he walked with his head held high straight out the same door Camille had departed through earlier. He was so relieved to be out of there. He would never go back to that restaurant again.

On the drive home, Aidan intended to hold true to his word and drive right past Camille, but nowhere along the rural stretch did he see her walking. At home, half the lights were on inside, so he gathered she’d managed a ride somehow.

After slowly pulling the SUV into the garage, he remained seated in it for more than a few minutes. At least the kids were with their mother for the week so they wouldn’t have to bear witness to the inevitable fight that was about to go down. They’d been exposed to enough lately. More than enough, Aidan thought.

He’d been with Camille nearly the entire three years he’d been separated from Olivia, but still, he’d not filed for divorce yet. Camille believed that meant he wasn’t truly committed to her and it made her very unhappy. It was a constant source of friction between them. Yes, he wanted her as his girlfriend, but on his terms, not hers.

It was getting very difficult though, to convince her to stay without that ring on her finger. Was he stalling? Did he know why? Did he love Camille? Why hadn’t he divorced Olivia? These questions ate at him insidiously, like parasites.

Eventually, he left the relative sanctuary of his garage and entered the house. Upstairs, he could hear Camille slamming drawers closed and, of course, crying. He hung his coat on the hall tree, set his keys on the kitchen table and slowly headed upstairs to confront her. When he opened their bedroom door, he found her frantically packing her belongings into the two suitcases that were opened up atop the bed. He looked around the room at the mess she’d made and shook his head.

Camille had opened a bottle of Merlot out of their wine cellar and was drinking straight from it as she stood in her closet yanking clothes off their hangers. She’d been trying to toss the items out into her suitcases but mostly they missed and fell to the floor, filling up the space between her and the bed. When she noticed him standing in the doorway looking disappointed, she stepped from the closet and seethed at him, “I hate you. I hate everything about you. You make me sick.”

“Camille,” Aidan started but then stopped. If she wanted to go, then go she should. He was done chasing her and fighting with her. The fighting had gotten so repetitive, with no resolution in sight, and he no longer cared if she believed him or not. Once, he’d wanted desperately for her to just let this issue lie, but she still refused. She insisted upon going down with the ship and there was no convincing her otherwise.

With a silent sigh, he leaned towards her, hoping to take the Merlot while she was distracted, but she caught his approach in the reflection of the full-length mirror beside them. She defensively swung out at him and barely missing his head with the butt end of the bottle, with the force of her swing sending her and the bottle crashing to the ground. Most of the wine ended up spraying around the room, making it look like a crime scene with red splotches splattered everywhere and a large red puddle pooled beneath her in the carpet.

Again, a heavy sigh overcame Aidan as he realized how ugly this was turning out to be. He extended his hand to her and unsurprisingly, Camille refused it. Instead, she warned him to keep his distance. “Stay away from me. I mean it, Aidan. Just leave me alone.”

“I don’t know how many times I have to explain to you that what you saw was innocent,” Aidan offered for the last time, exasperated and not entirely convinced himself.

“I’m not imagining it,” she insisted, distraught. “I know what I saw. She’s just a child, Aidan. She’s your daughter’s age for God’s sake!”

“Do NOT bring Berry into this! She has nothing to do with it.” he retorted sharply. His instinctively protective outburst was appropriate - she’d tread a thin line talking about his daughter. And, Sophie and Berry were nothing alike.

Where Berry struggled awkwardly, Sophie excelled. Sophie was an competent actress known world-wide while Berry was still a virgin struggling in secondary school. Sophie already had boyfriends, lovers and even a fiance while Berry was having a difficult time getting a date for her Senior Social. The two could only be compared like the proverbial apples and oranges; both fruits, true, but with flesh ripening in different seasons.

“I didn’t say she did,” came her response. “But if someone your age was dating Berry, you’d be angry. You can’t tell me it wouldn’t concern you.”

“I’m not dating Sophie,” he stated matter-of-factly. “Stay in reality, Camille.”

Sophie had reached 17, the age of consent in Ireland, when their first scripted kiss was shared. He was surprised at the viscerally unhinged attitude people had towards it. He was called a pedophile, a sexual predator and a rapist.  

Strangely, the intensity of hate directed towards him was nearly complimentary as it meant his acting was compelling enough to convince people he was his character, not himself. So he didn’t mind too much when fans got confused about the blurry lines his talent created, but fans weren’t the only ones having difficulty separating him from the character he played.

He hadn’t had this much backlash since playing Stuart on Queer as Folk. Many fans misunderstood the passion and erotic tension in the sex scenes he had with Charlie Hunnam. “That couldn’t be acting,” they assumed. “No straight man could kiss another man like THAT.” Was it really that hard to believe he was good at his job?

If people wrongly assumed he was gay, his humility allowed him to gracefully accept their confusion without being bitter or resentful. He was flattered by the misunderstanding of his sexuality back then and preferred to keep people guessing. He liked to be vague in order to maintain an air of mystery about him.

But in all honesty, the intimate moments he and Charlie shared were just as complicated as the fans considered them. Their closeness was distracting enough to make him question his orientation more often than he felt comfortable. He was almost entirely confident he wasn’t gay, but he still spent long hours obsessing over the next time he got to kiss Charlie. Those moments were the highlights of his days, and the time Charlie told him he tasted good, he felt giddy.

Charlie made him want something different in his sex life, not as a replacement, but as an enhancement. Maybe he was bisexual, or possibly just ‘Charlie-sexual,’ but either way, he no longer was exclusively attracted to women. Unbinding himself to societal expectations, he decided it was OK to expand his options. He felt free and was happy. And then he got married to Olivia and had two kids. It seemed counter-intuitive to his new found outlook, but it was his prerogative so he did it. Aidan always lived by his own rules.

But now, fifteen years later, he found himself in as deep as he’d been with Charlie. Kissing Sophie brought back all those familiar feelings of being scandalous and naughty and he didn’t care. It was that simple, and that complicated.

He found himself making subtle efforts to disrupt their kissing scenes so they’d have to be redone and, shucks, they’d have to snog all over again. When he realized Sophie had finally caught on to his manipulations he thought an immediate end would come to his ploy, but she surprised him and played along. They’d hold back giggles when they apologized and reluctantly agree to not mess up again, but it was inevitable. For a time, parting ways until the next day’s set call was like trying to separate hot water from tea. He’d barely sleep in anticipation of returning to work.

Soon enough, people started to take notice, but most everyone was too wary of the situation to say anything. Well, everyone except for Gwynnie, of course. She was always butting herself into the affairs of others. She warned them that talk would spread outside the confines of the studio if they weren’t careful, but they ignored her advice. Eventually their whirlwind romance left the privacy of the production studio and ventured out into Belfast. Everywhere they went, people whispered under their breath at the sight of them together. Their chemistry was obvious and their disregard for discretion soon caught up with them.

He really should’ve known better but he got complacent and let his pride get the better of him. He felt like he was entitled to everything he wanted, when he wanted it, however he wanted it. Now, however, he was paying for that arrogance. Funny thing about it though, the price seemed very small for the joy of having Sophie in his life.

“It’s not THAT you were kissing her,” Camille insisted, tears streaking down her face and red wine staining her clothes. “It was HOW you were kissing her. I know true passion when I see it. I’m not blind and I’m not an idiot.”

He nodded and said, “Agreed.”

“So you agree?” Camille queried, flabbergasted at his admission. “You finally admit it?”

“I admit nothing,” he backtracked. His final straw had snapped. “I have nothing I need to justify to you. I’m done with all this back and forth. You can believe whatever you want, about Sophie and me, or about anything.” 

Camille snorted in disgust but he simply did what he should have done months earlier. “Give me your house key,” he insisted, steel-faced with his hand outstretched. “Now Camille.”

Struggling to rise from the floor, she set the bottle on the nightstand and tried to leverage her weight against the bed to heave herself up and continue arguing. He made no effort to help her. She looked to him incredulously and then away, feverishly enraged that he was kicking her out before she had the chance to pack her things and leave on her own.

She snatched her purse from the nightstand and mumbled under her breath words he couldn’t discern while she fished through its contents to find her key chain. After she pulled the key from its ring, she threw the symbolic item at him, hitting him in the face with it and putting a small laceration on his cheek. “There you go, ya bastard,” she spat. “Fuck you.”

“No Camille,” he sighed as he bent to retrieve the key from the floor, “Fuck you. It’s over. Keep packing your shit and get out of this house. The sooner the better. I’m flying to California in three days and I expect all of your stuff to be gone before I leave. We’re absolutely through. I won’t do this anymore either.”

Aidan looked upon Camille for the last time as his companion and lover with a combination of sadness and contempt. He fought back the tears brimming in his eyes by grasping the key she’d thrown at him so tightly in his hand that it stung his palm, distracting him. Before she could protest with another word, he turned and left the bedroom, slamming the door shut on that chapter in his life for good.

He longed to hear Sophie’s voice but decided it best he not contact her. He fell asleep downstairs on the couch in the den, in front of the TV, after hearing Camille exit in a noisy huff and dreamed of Sophie’s sweet lips on his. Sweet dreams, indeed.
