What Monster Am I?
Welcome to my little monster project, a series that features 15 different Japanese monsters. I started this project because I had the idea of “If I were a monster, which one would I be?” And I mean based on my weaknesses and habits. Someone should make a quiz for it. It was originally going to be for all different cultures, but I decided to stick with just Japanese folklore.
Before reading the details on each individual monster, you should be familiar with this basic term:
Yōkai (妖怪)- (ghost, phantom, strange apparition) are a class of supernatural monsters and spirits in Japanese folklore. The word yōkai is made up of the kanji for “bewitching; attractive; calamity” and “apparition; mystery; suspicious”. They can also be called ayakashi, mononoke, or mamono.
Most of the monsters I decided to feature are female-based, due to the fact that my model is a girl. It was hard to choose out of them all, so I will probably be drawing more of them soon enough. You can read more about Yokai (and check out some awesome art) at Yokai.com. Most of what I’ve written comes from this site.

Japanese Edo period 18th century Artist Unknown, Japanese
Mandrake.
White Plum Blossoms and Moon. Itō Jakuchū (Japanese, 1716–1800). 1755, Japan. Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk. A large full moon is sole witness to a miraculous burst of white blossoms emerging out of a gnarled, old plum tree in the stillness of night. Itō Jakuchū, who painted this extraordinary, dreamlike image, was counted as one of the Three Eccentrics of the Edo period, together with Soga Shōhaku (1730– 1781) and Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799). In his exuberant depictions of plant life, he combined seemingly incompatible elements, such as realism with brilliant color and decorative abstraction. Born the eldest son of a wholesale grocer in Kyoto, Jakuchū inherited the family business and ran it for more than fifteen years. It was not until he reached his late thirties that he began to paint full-time. This painting, inscribed with the year 1755, is one of the earliest of his dated works. Mary Griggs Burke Collection, Gift of the Mary and Jackson Burke Foundation, 2015. MET
Something quick I put together to take to Anime Matsuri as a gift for Chuck Huber who voiced my first anime crush. //uvu// I’m taking a second copy to have him sign for me to keep.
