ā You donāt even remember how it happened. Not fully. One second you were somewhere in that cursed place. The next? You woke up in a hospital. Loved ones shed tears at your bedside. Arms held you firmly while you tried to recollect things and convince yourself it had all been real.
ā And once you did some research, you knew it was. The missing posters didnāt lie.
ā Which meant every interaction spared with the monsters had been just as real. Every glance thrown your way. Every word exchanged. The secret longing inside of you whenever certain ones neared. All of it.
ā You couldn't really look anyone in the eye after that. And suddenly, adapting to normal life seemed impossible. But no matter how fond youād become of some of those creatures, they still killed. People were still stuck back there with the ever present threat at night.
ā But how could you ever find them? Free them? You barely knew what you were up against.
ā Getting there by accident again was counter productive. You wouldnāt learn anything about getting in and out. You needed to study this weird phenomenon somehow.
ā No one around you understood your sudden fear of driving. They assumed it was because of an accident. No one really figured out what happened. No police officer would ever believe the truth, and your lips were sealed.
ā Unfortunately, if you wanted to understand, even a little, you needed to return to where you got taken. Maybe there was something there that could explain why that specific spot let you cross over.
ā So you took a bus. A bus wouldnāt cross over, you reasoned. There hadnāt ever been that many people entering at once.
That wouldnāt suddenly change, right?
ā For everyone else at Fromville your disappearance had been written off as you being dead. Only a select few had their suspicions. But the monsters dwelling the place knew the truth. You had left. You abandoned them. It had been such an unexpected turn of events.
ā A new script had been written and they werenāt made aware of it.
ā The howls that shredded through the forest were different than usual. More vicious. Their claws itched. Teeth gnashed. Longing to tear and hurt and kill. Despising the talismans that kept warm bodies away from their reach.
ā But the longer you were awayā¦ the more things returned to normal. On the surface, that is. Beneath, a strange sorrow had burrowed deep. They had a taste of something real, only for it to be taken so abruptly.
ā They barely managed to crawl back into their roles, angered over this cruelty. They managed anyway.
ā Sometimes they lingered at your window. Empty now. Your unique scent slowly faded. Your belongings sat safely hidden in buildings protected by talisman. Even that last bit of you was kept from them.
ā Some of them roamed the space they carved out for you inside the cave at times. Everything they prepared was for nothing. Yet, a few, like Smiley and the Milkman couldnāt quite keep from adding more. Things they believed youād like.
ā Others barely looked at that space anymore. Their pride stung too much. The reminders of you and how you werenāt there anymore, waiting for them, even more.
ā But they sensed something no human could. They read the signs. Thrill jittered in the air like a beating heart. Something was coming. Something exciting.
ā And it was. Ignorant people entered the Township that day. Many hid outside. Not from them. From the ones who wanted to save them and proceeded to lose control over the crowd. What a shame.
ā And amongst them, running in a hoodie in a vain attempt to blend in the night, was you.
ā The hoodie had blindsided them for a mere second. Your scent drifted from beneath foreign washing products. And when you tried to bring a couple huddling behind a car to safety, coaxing them to follow you to an unused hiding holeā
They found you. Saw the face hidden under the hoodie.
ā Truly, you would risk it all for these humans? Strangers who only gave you a semblance of trust because you were on that same bus as them?
ā The screech of the creatures who saw you first alerted everyone else. And just like that, the game was on.
ā The couple was still torn to shreds in front of the sheriff's station. Other unfortunate souls still met the same fate even as you tried to intervene.
ā Your hope faltered. Dedication turned to self preservation. And everything became instinct and fear and hunger for things you never wanted to acknowledge.
ā With such a lovely massacre on the background, chasing you was downright exquisite. Your foolish need to protect others would cost you. Perhaps not tonight, but thereās been many missed calls already. They can easily block your path. Herd you around.
ā Just one small mistake and that space back in their home could fulfill its purpose after all. Taking you, no, claiming you after tonight would make this night not just fun, but a feast.
ā Many waited for you. For years they were gentle. Patiently stoking those flames inside you higher. Bringing gifts and food and clothes. Protecting you from each other when interest was still growing amongst the group.
ā But gentle was apparently not what you wanted. Why else did your scent turn so heady while you ran? You must've been craving so badly while away. Badly enough to be outside after dark.
ā You wanted monsters? Wanted claws and teeth and brute force? Then thatās what theyāll be. Thatās what theyāll give you.
the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself

The most recent ceasefire has not meant an end to genocide. We must contextualize this truth within the larger historical reality: Palestine has been enduring genocidal aggression from Israel since 1948. There are periods of greater intensity, but no periods of actual relief from this state. This is the reality of all settler-colonial projects, including Zionism.
