It’s such a quiet moment, so quiet that he has to wonder if the universe has fallen apart, to just the sun and moon and earth — the moon, he’ll stay with earth forever, orbiting together around that warmth, that shining bulb in the dark. Jean’s voice is overwhelmed, the tears choke her words on the way to him. Logan feels it too, that suffocation, the end of a man so miserable and defeated. He’d been afraid, felt uprepared for this. He did. He does.
But it just doesn’t compare to the peaceful life that has consumed them. For now, for once, he isn’t made up of his horrors. His arm tightens around Jean, and his chest hiccups around the sob that stubbornly won’t leave his throat. He moves closer to Jean, pulling her close as he presses his lips to her temple.
He knows. He knows everything she means to say, because it’s everything he means to say. It’s all knotted up with the lump in his throat.
“Love you.” The declaration is sleepy, blurred. He’s tired too, having not slept since Jean’s water broke. He’d be stupid to forget who they are — what happens to superheroes at milestones. But that’s a faint subconscious decision. He just has Jean, and Katie, and the universe blurs behind them. He pulls back to smile at Jean, eyes crinkling warmly. Then, he makes the first move, slipping into the nursery towards the light in the dark.
Despite her mature, protective nature, being a mother is something that has never been in Jean's plans. Not because she doesn't like children, but because she never imagined bringing to the world - the world the way it is - an innocent life. All she wanted, everything she thought she needed to do, which she was meant to do, was to be a tool for making humans and mutants able to live in peace. Jean would be glad to die knowing that part of all the hatred and prejudice against the mutants had disappeared, no matter what the circumstances and what might happen to her. She was prepared for this, she decided that when she embraced Professor's philosophy and started to understand his ideas. As a faithful disciple, she was always ready to die for what she believed.
And there she is, in a soft robe, looking at her baby through the glass window of the Institute. Logan had entered the room, she stands still for a moment before following him. Jean’s bare feet glide across the icy floor of the room, shivering, as his eyes unconsciously search for the tiny, sleeping figure in the hastily prepared bed. The strange glow the child emanates seems stronger as Jean approaches, clutching her gaze with frightening intensity.
She was so beautiful.
Kate.
Kate Howlett.
Suddenly Jean feels a tightness in her chest; a good squeeze, an exciting nervousness. An awkward happiness. Her hands reach for the baby and slowly take it in her arms.
That's when she smiles for the first time that night. When Jean feels the simple weight of her baby in her arms, when she smells her scent, her texture, the brightness, when she notices the small eyes that barely opened to the world, it is as if a piece of her that she had long believed to have died suddenly had returned. A hole filled, a happiness she did not know existed. A weak smile becomes such a happiness that seems larger than her own being.
“ Logan, look. She’s so... look. ” her voice sounds shaky. Jean uses her thumb to caress the baby's face. “ She’s beautiful. She’s so... I... ” She stares at Logan one more time. “ Do you want her? ”

“ You’re my baby girl. Nothing will change that. ”

Maybe there should have been more concern on Logan’s part. But he’d been around his own kind enough to be used to abnormalities. This could have been the work of something malicious, but there was something so soft, assuring, beautiful, about the way the light shone and flickered… Logan was used to seeing miracles from his own kind. And yes, Katie was far too young to already have a mutation… but it wasn’t impossible. Logan’s arm wrapped around Jean’s waist as he quietly murmured back, “I think that’s all her. Maybe she’s dreamin’ and we’re gettin’ a chance to see.”
Her eyes are swallowed toward the baby in such a way that nothing in the world is able to push it away. Jean’s speechless, her muscles relax gradually. Logan's voice slowly fades into silence for a moment as she faintly approaches the entrance and rests her weary fingers against the half-open door. For the first time in her life, Jean is faced with something different from all the mysteries of science that truly surprises her. And yet, the redhead turns her face to her husband beloved to make sure it's everything real ------ the baby, their baby. Katie.
“ Yes... ” she murmurs, her hoarse voice explains her eyes full of tears. “ She’s so... beautiful... Logan, look... ” She points to the baby that's his, that he's been staring for the last few hours, but that he needs to look again. The mutation suddenly seems irrelevant. Jean’s body seems tired but it doesn’t matter. No matter that she's tired, no matter that she has had a difficult birth, none of this matters. She just wants to... take the small being in her arms. Their child. “ Katie... ”
