OUT OF STICKY BUNS • This came up on T.witter last night when I was yelling while I listened to my dress rehearsal audio but I’m gonna say it here too: I would not remotely have blamed Rita if she’d hatefucked Phil during the loop.
ritahanson:
She knew that outright laughing wasn’t the best idea, but she found herself fighting a smirk all the same.
“Oh they’re excited, Phil, don’t be so miserable.” Her tone was the sort that would’ve been accompanied by a gentle nudge to his side had she been next to him - a degree of fondness mixed with a long-suffering sigh. That being said, she’d kind of learned to see his various (inevitably grumpy) points after working with him for so long, no matter how reluctant she generally was to let him know that.
“It isn’t as though they’re trying to imply that you didn’t forecast the snow.”
He leaned across his desk and rested his head gently on his computer monitor, closing his eyes and praying for the last forecast of the day to be cancelled.
“I deserve a goddamn Oscar.”
hey seeing as ur never on here is there any chance you can give up ur url so i can use it? seems stupid that ur hogging it tbh
Honestly, I spent the few days since I got this sporadically coming up with witty responses or wording a small rant, but to boil it all down to the main point I was going to make:
No.
To expand upon this response:
I got here first, and you’re going to have to deal with it like a grown up.
A final point to finish with:
Fuck you. I hope Santa (or a magical being of your choice) uses their magic to sprinkle crumbs all over your bed that can never be removed, and that your New Year is filled with people drunkenly waking you up just as you got to sleep.
I will never give up this URL - even in the afterlife - and my next of kin have been informed of my wishes. You have been warned.
ritahanson:
“…Can you hear yourself? I think you’re confusing the words exciting and infuriating.”
“Tell that to Jessica from finance.”
“She thinks I’m exciting. She’s thrilled to finally be getting up close and personal with a fixture of evening family viewing.”
ritahanson:
[ text: Phil Connors ⛅️ ] Accurate! I know you too well for you to get away with lying to me, Phil. [ text: Phil Connors ⛅️ ] And we’ll pretend I believe that! [ text: Phil Connors ⛅️ ] Would I be asking if I’d got the text? I’d say ‘please tell me you’re joking’, but I have a horrible feeling you’re actually not. [ text: Phil Connors ⛅️ ] So you get a nice flashback to what it was like to forecast the weather where you started out? We’ll all have to follow your lead 😉
[ text: Rita Hanson ] You know I never lie ;) [ text: Rita Hanson ] Well, it’s true, preferred producer. [ text: Rita Hanson ] We were wondering where you were. [ text: Rita Hanson ] Funny. Velcro already existed then, I could stick that shit on.

THE FEMME FATALE
KEY CHARACTERISTICS :: mysterious, self-destructive, charming, subversive .
You are capable of using charm, beauty, and wit to work for your own gain. You understand people's desires easily and know how to use them. You may find yourself relying on others too often, and have difficulty extracting yourself from a situation once it has begun (*mun cackling*). You may one day find yourself accused of something unjustly (or possibly not, possibly by a giant demon groundhog), but if you take a moment to step back from the driving force within yourself you may avoid destruction.
FILM RECOMMENDATIONS :: ‘DOUBLE INDEMNITY’, ‘OUT OF THE PAST’, ‘MURDER, MY SWEET’.

Do you not think Phil would be too bored of Rita to want to be in a relationship with her post loop? He already knows everything about her, and I feel like they'd both find that really creepy? I think she'd still be willing to be his friend and help him deal with normal life again, but I don't think either of them are in love with each other?
[Usual disclaimer here: your opinions are your own and I respect that, but you also sent them into my inbox so I shall be responding to them honestly with my views on the subject.]
I am going to start out by saying that I think that you and I, anon, approach this musical from opposing perspectives. As such, I don’t fully believe that anything I say will convince you of anything other than what you already think, as you sent this anon to ritahanson a long while before you did me and you still felt the need to send it my way.
Groundhog Day the Musical is, due both to the nature of the story and the way it is portrayed on stage, very much a surreal piece. I mean, come on, it’s a romantic comedy about a man living the same day repeatedly - it requires a certain suspension of disbelief. It is, in it’s way, both a fairytale and a redemption tale, and as such comes with aspects of both things. Granted, it’s arguably a twist on the former, but the basics are still there. I don’t know about you, but for me that means that Phil starts out a twat and ends up a good bloke, and that there will be a happy ending.
I do not think Phil would be bored of Rita post-loop. I think there is danger in taking Phil at his word when he says that he knows everything about Rita. What Phil knows is Rita-the-person, and Rita-the-Person on February second in Punxsutawney. A single day, while offering a significant number of possibilities scenario-wise, is actually not that much to base knowing a whole person on, even if you have lived through all the possible outcomes. Phil doesn’t yet know what Rita is like when she has road rage, or what she’s like on Christmas morning, or how she interacts with any of her friends or relatives. He hasn’t seen any of her life outside of Punxsutawney and the flood story. That’s pretty fucking limited. I would also like to add that in my experience, loving someone is knowing a vast number of things about them and still being interested to see those things in action; it’s enjoying being with them, even if it’s not a wild voyage of discovery. If Phil truly falls in love with Rita during his time in the loop (something he clearly does - more on that later), it would be excessively cynical and nonsensical to assume that he as a changed man would become bored of her the second he has the opportunity to discover more about her?
Following what I’ve said above, I honestly think that Phil could manage the simple task of not doing anything creepy? He’s done it before? The vast majority of the times she has found him truly ‘creepy’ in the show involved him predicting the future, not knowing her (although there is certain leeway on this in the moments following ‘Everything About You’). In fact, his knowledge of her actually helps him to become a better person and realise that he needs to do good - the doing good that allows him to win her in the end. During the one day she remembers, he is not creepy at all.
Dealing with the idea of him having to ‘deal with normal life’: I would suggest that as the loop is a narrative construct designed to bring about a change in Phil, it’s purpose is fulfilled as soon as he has changed. He’s not horribly scarred by the experience, and as shown by ‘Seeing You’ he accepts that he needed to change and has done so. It’s given him a fresh perspective on the world. Granted, it was a difficult experience for him, but I doubt that it is something that is going to require therapy for the rest of his days, or for him to work through everything with Rita. He comes to peace with his time and place.
To put things in simple terms, Phil is born anew at the end of the show - it’s not something he needs to recover from or dwell on because he’s a new person. It’s even reflected in the dialogue - ‘Or are we through here?’ ‘Through? We haven’t even started.’
I am concerned that there must be some confusion; you and I obviously didn’t watch the same musical, since you think neither of them is in love with each other?!? What?! The fuck? (Also don’t mess with authorial intent my dude; ‘And later of course the great irony is, she does fall in love in one day’ - Tim Minchin, talking about Rita and pretty much doing my work for me on this one. And hey, while I’m here, Director Matthew Warchus is highly optimistic about their future together.)
Tl;dr: He does not get bored of her. He knows enough to love her as a person, but he still has a whole world of things to learn about her. Due to not being a moron/having common sense he is able to navigate the complex issue of already knowing things about her, since the majority would take him only seconds so learn anyway. It’s like amplified Facebook stalking. He doesn’t need to ‘deal with’ normal life, they are in love, it’s a fairytale goddammit.
Suck my balls, i’m out.
do you have a broadway character, oc, or verse ? if so, please reblog this post with your character(s) name in the tags, if you are an oc please specify that, and if you only have a verse be sure to specify that as well. please reblog once per blog.
reblog and tag appropriately and you will be added to this list.
{ ‘Sup,
This is just a little note to say thank you to all my new followers and messagers - I’m sorry I’ve given you such a shoddy welcome thus far - as well as my lovely pre-existing followers.
I have been absent largely due to some severe medical issues, but I appear to finally be on a manageable cocktail of drugs and should now be able to do useful things such as sitting up and using my arms. Oh the thrill.
I can’t promise to be back on a regular basis (this poor blog has always seemed to have me at my least reliable), but rest assured that I am not abandoning Phil (hasn’t he been through enough?!) and will endeavour to catch up forthwith.
Also because I know a few of you are there lurking, I would also like to welcome all the people who have now had the chance to experience Groundhog Day the Musical in some form to the fandom! Feel free to come at me with your questions, suggestions and general excitement about the show! I’ve seen the show a ridiculous amount of times and am ready to yell about it with anyone and everyone.
With love, Suck my balls, I’m out. -R }
Do you think post-loop Phil would tell Rita of all the things he did/went through in the loop?
Honestly, no. I’m a big believer in honesty in a relationship, but I’m also a big believer in not getting locked up in an institution for the rest of your life because you go around telling people that you were cursed to spend all eternity repeating the same day until you stopped being a douche.
And by a demon groundhog no less.
Would you be interested in interacting with Groundhog Day characters other than Rita? I saw the show a couple of weeks back and absolutely loved Nancy so I've been trying to figure out how I would write her!
{ Yes, YES, Y E S P L E A S E I WOULD LOVE THAT!
Honestly, the idea of having other GHD characters to interact with is so exciting - and especially a character as fantastic as Nancy! If you wanna slide into my inbox to discuss or anything feel free, but otherwise I shall be on the lookout! }

Phil wasn't one for grand gestures (nothing too grand, at least), especially not first thing in the morning. But even with that in mind, he did want Rita's birthday to start off in the spirit in which he intended for it to go on.
So he went about his morning as normal except, that is, for the little box that was left on his pillow - where she would be sure to see it once she woke up - before he headed out for coffee.
