I'm doing some final touches on my presentation for KDIAF here in Taipei and I stumbled on an early unused Adventure Time concept.

Early-ish Wirt and Greg art.
The incredibly illustrious character designer Phil Rynda and I will be giving back-to-back lectures at RISD on Wednesday, February 4th, in the Main Auditorium. Both talks are free and open to the public, however seating is limited so get there early! Apparently at my last RISD talk in October of 2013 there were people turned away due to fire code regulations. Don’t let it happen to you!
7:30 pm – Bryan Konietzko
9:00 pm – Phil Rynda
Phil is a really cool guy who I just met and started getting to know last year when he joined Nickelodeon as the Vice President of Artist Development. He is generously coming out to RISD to help me as a guest critic in the final reviews for my class, and he is extra-generously giving a lecture that I can’t wait to see. We’ve been looking at his work a lot in my class.
My last RISD lecture was about my whole artistic journey from school to show-creating/-running, but this time I am planning to focus solely on the making of The Legend of Korra, and then outline some advice for getting into and thriving within the animation industry. If you saw my last talk in 10/13, there will undoubtedly be a bit of overlap but I’ll do my best to make it fresh!
Phil Rynda will talk about his career in animation as well as his character design process, showing his own work as well as other examples. Phil will hold a Q&A after his lecture (not me, though!).
I cleaned up, colored, and Raava-ized my poster image based on a Korra sketch by Lauren Montgomery. Michael Kolendowicz at RISD did a lovely job with the type and layout.
I hope to see you at the lectures!
Hey guys…. I’m going to be following Bryan Konietzko in back to back lectures at RISD the night of February 4th…. gulp.
I got to know Bryan when I started at Nick and I was honored when he asked me to join him at RISD as a guest in his class as well as doing this “one two combo” lecture with him. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
I look forward to seeing you there!
reposting here in case you don't follow me on my main Tumblr.
I did some rough character layouts / special poses for the Star titles. People wanna see some?
Stumbled across some old AT stuff. ZERO memory of drawing this.
One of those nights.
Pretty surreal!! ....I have some notes though.
Sometimes nice things happen. Sometimes they don't.
At SVA I used to draw from models for 9-15 hours a week, and my work was way more sensitive. Something happened to my life-drawing when I found myself drawing cartoons all day. I'm not sure if it's good or bad (probably a little of both).
Looking at these drawings, done about a year and a half ago, I look like i'm attacking the drawing more than I would back in school (10 years ago). I think some of the confidence is good… but maybe I'm overcompensating for my lack of focus and anatomical knowledge. I'm supposed to know what I'm doing, right? …but I guess that's actually the problem. I was taught to treat the model as a miracle versus a tool. The model/pose is not something I could ever truly know, but that I should try to experience through my drawing.
I feel my identity as a character design fighting with my identity as an artist.
huh…. kinda neat I guess.
Do people read these? To the people reading: on a scale of 1 to lame, how do I come off?
Life drawings in which there is zero attempt to draw a model's face/gaze are not life drawings.
these two are better than those last two, but are still sort of "not fully cooked through".
