How To Build A Trellis For Grape Vines
When growing grapes, there’s more to it than just ensuring the right soil and weather conditions. Grape vines grow upwards, so the right support is vital. While this isn’t going to be required until they grow tall enough, it’s better to have a trellis in place as soon as possible.
One important benefit to this is that you’re not pushing into growing roots or vines within the soil itself. This also gives you time to make various adjustments before the vines settle onto the trellis itself.
What Type Of Trellis?
The first thing you need to do is to determine what type of trellis you want. Some of this is down to choice, while some factors will be relative to your local climate. If you have a region that gets colder early on, tall trellises make the most of the warmer air up top (cold air often gets trapped on the ground). Consequently, warmer regions may want lower options, to give the grapes somewhere to cool.
