âHarry Potterâ Star Alan Rickman Dies at 69
By Alex Ritman, The Hollywood Reporter
British icon of stage and screen Alan Rickman has died. He was 69.
The actorâs reps confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor had passed away on Thursday.
âThe actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends,â his family said in a statement.
Rickman, who rose to fame in Hollywood as baddie Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard film, was much-loved on both sides of the Atlantic, later adding to his list of on-screen antagonists when he played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Price of Thieves, for which he won a BAFTA, and finding a new generation of fans as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series.

Last year he released the period drama A Little Chaos starring Kate Winslet, his second stint as director after 1997âs A Winter Guest. His last film as an actor was to be Alice Through The Looking Glass, voicing the blue caterpillar again in the upcoming follow up to Disneyâs 2010 hit Alice in Wonderland.
Although Rickman would never win an Oscar, he would add to his BAFTA win for Robin Hood with a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
On stage, however, he was arguably more celebrated, breaking through in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he would earn a Tony nomination in 1986. Other standout roles included playing Mark Antony alongside Helen Mirrenâs Cleopatra in London, and in Noel Cowardâs Private Lives, which would transfer to Broadway from the West End. He also directed the award-winning 2005 play My Name is Rachel Corrie about the American student who was killed by an Israeli Defense Force bulldozer in the Gaza Strip.

.September has the unfortunate reputation of being âspider season,â but one company claims to have a new solution for at least one of arachnophobesâ biggest nightmares. A U.K. company called TigerSheds says it has developed â the only spider-proof shed on the web .â âThis product is scientifically proven to be spider proof and is the perfect shed for anyone who has a fear of spiders and wishes to enter their shed in full confidence,â the company boasts. The shed boasts airtight windows, draft-sealed doors, âspider-repellentâ lining paper, and a âNo Spiders Allowedâ sign with questionably helpful spider-proofing tips like âshut the door behind you.â If you want to upgrade, there are add-ons like a biannual pest test, âimpregnated peppermint, citrus and insecticide treatment,â and our favorite: âa detached âcreepy crawleyâ den to attract spiders away from main shed.â You know⌠in case you have any enemies. To top it all off, the whole thing is painted robinâs egg blue, which the company says is âscientifically provenâ to repel spiders. Is it worth it? Without add-ons, the shed costs an arachnophobe $3,067. And there is considerable debate over its effectiveness. Paul Hetherington of the charity Buglife told the Guardian he thinks the shed is âutterly ridiculous,â and says thereâs no science supporting any of the âspider-repellingâ features. Ouch! To add insult to injury, a well-read prankster is flooding the TigerSheds site with â reviews â ridiculing the product from the perspective of literary characters âHagrid, apparently, loves the shed. But for those of us who live in fear of arachnids, is there anything we actually can do to make our homes a little less spider-friendly? If youâre not prepared to fork over $3,000, is there really anything you can do to keep these eight-legged creepers away from your home? Lots of blogs will suggest spraying peppermint, eucalyptus , and citrus oils in spider-prone corners, under beds, and along window frames. But as Hetherington points out, âthere are a few herbs that insects donât like, but Iâm not aware of any that spiders are opposed to. ⌠Short of living in a hermetically sealed box, you canât not encounter spiders.â Part of the problem is that the spiders you encounter in your home during August and September are usually not seeking shelter from the cold, they are lovelorn mature male âhouse spidersâ wandering around looking for a mate. Theyâre most likely already in your home, hiding out in dusty corners and cluttered crawlspaces, so keeping them from coming inside isnât the problem. Most of them probably couldnât even survive outside. Your best bet? Declutter. If youâre truly terrified of playing spider host, your best option is to keep a clean, dust-free home with minimal spider-friendly clutter. Howâs that for motivation? Also, remember that spiders protect your home from flies, aphids, wasps, mosquitos, and lots of other insidious beasties. So instead of sleeping with the light on, use these sources to learn which spiders are actually a threat to you and your family. And maybe skip painting your whole house powder blue⌠unless, you know, you think that might look nice.
