I found my spirit animal
The Cog Blockers have their first bout of the season against Strawberry City Roller Derby at Everett Community College. Doors open at 4 and our whistle is at 5.
This was at the Artistic Roller Skating World Championships. Playing a giant game of chicken on skates with 18 bodies out there at the same time was sooooo insane but it did turn out pretty cool.
I remember one year where the diagonal move went horribly wrong and we crashed. There were bodies everywhere and a few of us had to go to the hospital.....in Argentina.....the night before we competed. Our team skaters were anywhere between 15 and 83 years old that year.
We fought like family. Could be that half of us were related to at least one other member. Sisters, parents, GRANDPARENTS, uncles, cousins, etc. I still wouldn't trade that time in my life for anything.
Now I coach for the same rink we used to compete out of. It feels surreal sometimes knowing that both my coaches have passed on and I am left alone to my own devices...to carry on their legacy. After all, Marlene and Gerald Bruland were in the Artistic Skating Hall of Fame. I could only hope to be up there next to them some day.
Rollerskates in the 1920s. I can see why Mordecai had a hard time using these.
I used to know a guy who had a pair similar to their. They were 2 wheeled inlines with what I believe were Lil Red Wagon Wheels. He could do jumps and spins in them and I was completely in awe. Totally my hero.
The twack heard 'round the world 🌎 😭
