@photografear said: you could have done something.
in his youth, he also tried desperately to cling to a relative’s life. he saw suffering, he saw how affliction could tear away at a body. ( the death rattle in his mother’s throat, how her entire being fell to fragility. the raw brutality of it all.. ) so there’s rhyme and reasoning to why he so vividly remembers claude, remembers him. why would he ever forget?
cruel, how tightly their lives and fates intersect. once, he saw some part of himself in joseph / saw some essence of his mother in claude. perhaps that’s why tried abandoning his principles, tried his all to aid claude. to at least ease his suffering in some way while what remaining embers of life lingered. some part of aesop wanted to help him in a different way. but heaven damned otherwise. this is where the parallels between them end, giving way to the contrasting duality of their conditions: death is final / death is indiscriminate. sacred testament to aesop, but a gospel that the other cannot accept. that resilience and defiance feels so much like heresy. such fervent fear is beyond aesop’s understanding. still, it feels unbearable being near him, knowing that joseph fought for him to stay alive. unknowing to how much blood — whose blood — stains your hands. his passing still feels like the greatest sin you’ve ever committed.
“ i … i tried. ” lying like this is horrible, there’s no greater mental agony. mouth opens to speak, to try and offer some explanation. but he can’t find the strength for excuse or confession. his voice only tremors. “ i’m sorry. ”
“ I know . ” You both have changed . Youth’s grasp loosened &&. faded long ago , past slipping through trembling fingers like water through a crack . You remember Aesop well , memory a hatchet never quite buried . You both tried — Cloths soaked in cold water , wrung over sweaty brows to keep the fever at bay ( the rattling breaths still haunt you / you can hear them in the wind ) .
He did do something . Vials of medicine , leeches — a man so enthralled with death clings so gently to the life of another . It wasn’t enough . Why wasn’t it enough ? Why him ? “ He was so young . . . ” Claude was just beginning to thrive . Like a flower , so precious , your brother was meant to bloom . He never did ( wilted instead , rotted away ) . “ Do you remember him well ? Now that you’re still here to do so . ” You thought him dead , shed tears for the very man you blamed ( why ? ) . Death was supposed to have taken Aesop , too . Does it matter ? Why do you feel rage bubbling within ? Why him ? Why not Claude ? What has he done to deserve his life ?
“ I’ll see you dead , for that some day Aesop . ” &&. you will weep , for he has your brother’s eyes , his curiosity . He is all that remains &&. soon , he too will fade ( isn’t life horrid / isn’t death bitter ? ) . You will weep . The shutter will click .
