City Hall, San Fransisco, California, USA

Completed in 1915 and designed by Arthur Brown, Jr, San Fransisco's City Hall reflects the City Beautiful movement that was sweeping the country at the time. San Francisco was working on a master plan done by famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham which included this city center which was planned to be completed for the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in 1915. Unfortunately, my wife and I did not have time to go inside, which, based on photos I have since seen, is quite grand. Luckily, I got a single image of its main entry door.

The Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Rijks museum is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw. It was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened in 1885. On 13 April 2013, after a ten-year renovation which cost € 375 million, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix. In 2013 and 2014, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands with record numbers of 2.2 million and 2.47 million visitors. It is also the largest art museum in the country.

Biosphere, Montreal, QC, Canada

Designed by Buckminister Fuller, this building was originally the United States Pavilion At Expo 67. After the exposition, the US donated it to Montreal, which turned it into an environment museum in North America and renamed it the Biosphere. The Biosphere's mission is now to raise citizen awareness, action, and engagement in environmental issues.

Perlan, Reykjavik, Iceland

Perlan (The Pearl), a museum and rotating glass dome that stands on top of Öskjuhlíð Hill , is one of Reykjavík's most distinctive landmarks. The site is built on top of six water tanks that, in total, store 24 million litres of Reykjavík's hot water. Architect Ingimundur Sveinsson originally designed the building in 1991; the hot water storage tanks that had stood on top of Öskjuhlíð since the mid-20th-century were updated when the hemispherical glass dome was added on top.

The Tropic Cinema, Key West, Florida, USA

The Tropic Cinema is an independent movie theater complex with multiple screens and a classic Key West lounge. Based on its Art Deco facade, one would think it might date from the 1920's or 1930's, but in fact it opened in 2004. Arrive early and sample wine and cheese, Zabar's coffee, and a variety of snacks not expected at a movie popcorn stand

Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark

In a city full of tourist destinations (think Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid Statue, ...), Nyhavn is almost certainly among the biggest draws. Danish for New Harbor, its brightly colored buildings make for great photograhphy. The large number of cafes make it a great place for people watching too. The story we got from our history tour guide was that, back in the day when this was a real working harbor, the sailors that lived here needed a way to easily find their residence after they got drunk, hence the different bright color scheme for the buildings.

The Railyard, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

In February 2002, exactly 122 years to the month that the first train pulled into Sante Fe, a Railyard Master Plan was approved to renovate what was then a blighted old train station. Completed in 2008, it is now a wonderful mix of food vendors, restaurants, artists, and performers musical and otherwise. And there is even a train station where one can catch the Roadrunner to Albuquerque.

Mercado Central, Valencia, Spain

This masterpiece of modernist architecture in Valencia was designed in 1914 by Francisco Guardia and Alejandro Soler and was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1928. With a surface area of over 8000 square meters, inside you can find almost whatever in the more than 1000 vendors selling fresh fish, vegetables, meat, fruit...

Central Library, San Diego, California

This 9-story structure was designed by San Diego architect Rob Quigley. It is topped with an iconic steel-and-mesh lattice dome over a two-story rare-book reading room. It opened on September 30, 2013. The library displays numerous books and collections, including the second largest collection of baseball memorabilia in the U.S.

Gare de Lyon, Paris, France

This train station was built for the World Exposition of 1900. On multiple levels, it is considered a classic example of the architecture of its time. Most notable is the large clock tower atop one corner of the station, similar in style to the clock tower of the United Kingdom Houses of Parliament, home to Big Ben. It handles about 90,000,000 passengers every year, making it the third busiest station of France and one of the busiest of Europe.

Commercial Street, Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA

Provincetown sits at the tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It is on the site of the Mayflower’s landing in 1620, which is commemorated by the towering Pilgrim Monument in town. Commercial Street is its main shopping street.

La Tour Eifell, Paris, France

My favorite fun facts about the Eifell Tower: Number of drawings = 5,300 Number of rivets used = 2,500,000 Length of time as the tallest building in the world = 41 years (surpassed by the Chrysler Building in 1930)

Chapel of the Holy Cross, Sedona, Arizona, USA

This stunning church – designed by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude (a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) in the 1950s – protrudes from the red cliffs less than 4 miles south of Sedona's "Y" intersection. The main stained glass window is held together by a giant cross and overlooks the Verde Valley.

Park Güell, Barcelona, Spain

Park Güell is an enormous garden with stunning and distinct architectural elements designed by the renowned Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí. The Park is named after Eusebi Güell, a rich entrepreneur and count that had a great passion for Gaudí’s work and who became his patron. The park was originally conceived as part of a luxury residential complex, but over the years this idea was dropped and in its place Güell and Gaudí designed a park that could be the setting for a fairy tale.

Sun and Sand Motel, Santa Rosa, New Mexico, USA

When we were there (in 2015), this classic route 66 motel was closed. Luckily, its even more classic neon sign was still there, allowing me to get this shot. Some articles on the internet point to new ownership that was to reopen the motel in 2017, but I can't verify whether or not this came about.

Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy

Architecturally, this is one of the most important Gothic churches in Tuscany. The exterior is the work of Fra Jacopo Talenti and Leon Battista Alberti. The interior holds extraordinary works of art including Masaccio's Trinità, Ghirlandaio's fresco cycle in the Tornabuoni Chapel and Giotto's Crucifix, among others. Plus there is a small plaza with lots of benches in front where you can often sit and listen to street musicians.

The rail line to North Conway was completed June 3, 1872, during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1874, the Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway Railroad built the North Conway station. Noted architect Nathaniel J. Bradlee of Boston designed the beautiful structure.
