My Shanghai by David Barlow
As I prepare to leave Shanghai, I am going to post some of (what I consider to be) my best photographs of the city taken over the last four years.
My life here began in October 2010. I had visited the city several times before, but this time it was different. I became addicted to Shanghai — to the lights, the nights, the smells, the buildings, the history, the streets, the people and the stories they had to tell. I would roam the city by day and night, my tripod slung over one shoulder like a rifle — hunting for pictures.
This photograph, titled “The Singing Ringing Tree” (for reasons I won’t go into here) sums it up for me, taken from my favourite bridge in Shanghai — the gently sloping and unobtrusive Zha-Pu Road Bridge.
It was an unusual evening — cloudy, yet clear. And the waters of Suzhou Creek were as calm and flat as I have ever seen them — mirroring the Oriental Pearl Tower almost perfectly. Brooding on the left is Broadway Mansions built in the 1930s … in front of the tower is Waibaidu or Garden Bridge that once divided the International Settlement from the Japanese Concession … old and new, borrowed and blue … rich man, poor man, beggar and thief.
This is Shanghai, my Shanghai …

Shanghai Nights : Waibaidu 60cm x 45cm Copyright: David Barlow, 2014
I am a professional photographer and writer currently based in Shanghai, China. I divide my time between art, travel photography and stock images. I took this photograph on a bitterly cold winter's night in Shanghai during a snow-flurry. Taken with a Canon 5Dii and 17mm tse lens.
