     Well that was good, so at least her words reached the other girl.

     It was just like her to be concerned with others, and that was no exception here. Even if Alyssa didn’t know what was worrying the other, she was glad that she could’ve helped in someway. Maybe she’d get to know what the other was so worried about someday, but not today it seemed.

     “It’s fine, as long as you’re okay now. Besides, it’s nice to meet new people, right?”

“Yeah! I love meeting new people and making new friends! There’s no better way to broaden your horizons.”

Now we’re getting somewhere. And that somewhere is ‘away from talking about murder games’.

That song was on his mind as he finished his duties as an Council officer for the day. The man even sang it alone as he wheeled towards the empty courtyard of Aster Academy. His voice still cracked but, at least his vocal cords were getting better. He looked up to the cloudy sky as he hummed the rest of the song to himself.

Nothing gets past your ears, piano freak. The moment I heard it, it was like gravity shifted, and I practically stumbled backward to see if I could find the source of the humming. It was such an interesting tune that I had to track it back, and eventually I narrowed it down to a boy standing in the courtyard. Now, how to make an approach without looking like a creep...?

“Hey, uh... What’s that you’re humming?”

     He’s not sure what he was expecting to find in the city, but he certainly wasn’t expecting to find one of his classmates. Especially when he saw her die right before his eyes, for a crime that she didn’t commit none the less.

     He had wanted to see her again, but he never thought it would be like this…

     There was a lot he wanted to say to her, if he could ever talk to her again. After all, he’d been carrying a heavy burden ever since she died, but he had promised her after all. That he wouldn’t lose sight of the truth, even if it was painful. Even if he didn’t want to doubt his friends, they had to survive. And survive he did…

      He’s not normally emotional, or well, over emotional, but there’s what feels like the prickling of tears behind his eyes. He’d already cried enough over her death before, but it wasn’t sorrow he was feeling. It was relief, pure relief and happiness.

     “A-Akamatsu-san…” His voice is small and choked up, but he’s happy, really happy right now, even if he can barely talk with how choked up he is.

The moment was practically straight out of some cheesy movie. 

I guess... if I had to pick a person I was ‘closest to’ back at the academy, it would have been him. But why was it so monumental, so emotional of a reunion that time seemed to stop and the world faded away? Why did it feel as though to meet him here in this city was some great stand against fate itself?

I couldn’t begin to imagine why I was feeling all of those things, even if somehow I still knew they were the right things to feel. But as I always did, and as I always have... I pushed those feelings out of my mind.

“Shuichi...? What’s wrong? You’re crying...”

✝ : perhaps there was a better way to phrase that. it seems like right as he managed to ease her worries, he only brought up more. well, no one said korekiyo was good at comforting people. actually, he’s definitely not. that’s not his job. he’d let out a small sigh as he shook his head.

“vanishing might’ve not been the proper term. returning home would be a better way to say it. they don’t just vanish from thin air. i assume they go back home. nothing is confirmed though.” 

As much as Kiyo is good at... uh, the stuff he does, he definitely needs to work on his people skills. Because somehow, he managed to scare me even more by correcting himself.

“...S-so, if they’re people we know... would they go back to the killing game?”

I was shocked to hear how quietly my voice came out.

“A-ah….” He had to pull his scarf up in embarrassment a little, realizing his assumption. A hamster poking its head out and sniffing at the strange woman, while Gundham himself gently pulled the scarf back down. It was far too hot to keep his scarf too high, and the same hamster easily poked back out to lazily get another sniff.

“I do believe if I were to join you in such an endeavor and introduction would be necessary!” He tried to save himself from feeling awkward, the realization crashing upon him how bad he was at actually talking.

“I am the overlord of ice, half-demon and companion to the four dark devas of destruction! Gudham Tanaka!” He made sure to over emphasize his name especially, to leave a lasting impression as three hamsters popped to greet the lady.

“One of the devas however, is left in my abode, as her form has left her a little vulnerable. However the rest of my dark gods are at peak health in these mortal forms!”

I jumped a bit when, to my surprise, a hamster of all things popped out of the boy’s scarf! Even as he attempted to recall it, my eyes were fixed on it. He keeps hamsters... IN his scarf... That’s beyond weird! That’s crazy! And everything keeps getting crazier with this guy! Four dark devas...? Overlord of– wait, overlord of ice? Why ice of all things? Why is he introducing himself as a demon? Er, half-demon? And aren’t demons usually fiery, not icy?! I thought he was being confusing before, but NOW he’s...

“...Wha... huh...?”

It was all I could squeeze out of my brain with his domineering personality overwhelming it.

     “Well, if you’re sure then, okay. But do keep in mind that you can ask for help from others if you need it, okay?

     Alyssa had a feeling the other girl was trying to drive the conversation away from their current topic, and while she did want to know why the other girl was so troubled, it probably was best to let it go for now. Prodding about it right now probably wasn’t the right thing to do, so she might as well let the conversation topic change.

     Then again, she was never against making friends to begin with. It’s one of the things she’s done a lot since arriving in the city after all. 

     “It’s nice to meet you Kaede, I’m Alyssa Myles.” She smiles brightly at the other girl, holding out her hand to her to shake.

“Yeah! Don’t worry, that’s something I definitely have committed to memory.”

I smiled. It’s really nice to know she’s keeping an eye out for that kind of thing. Just like I would... But it looks like she’s backing down from the questioning. Thank goodness, I don’t know if I could have kept deflecting like that.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you, too, Alyssa. Sorry about all that confusion.”

It’s while she is cleaning the lobby of the hotel that Kirumi reunites with another familiar face.

Kirumi isn’t employed by the Hummingbird Hotel, nor does she have any particular obligation to the place. But after several days in Stella City, she would have gone stir-crazy by now had she not tasked herself with fixing the place up so that those within it could work to their greatest potential.

Not as though most people would consider the place in any sort of need of fixing up… but to the trained maid’s eye, there is always work to be done. (Especially to a maid who hates taking days off more than anything else, mind you)

Were it anyone else, she might be too engrossed in her current task to notice. But of all of Kirumi’s classmates, there was one who had managed to make an impression more than anyone else from the start as a unifying force.

“Kaede Akamatsu, I wouldn’t have thought you would be brought here as well. That is you, isn’t it?”

Yet another bright and sunny morning in Stella City. I descended the stairs of the hotel to the lobby, pausing as I passed the counter.

“Oh, good, someone cleaned that tea stain. It’s been bothering me...”

That’s when I first noticed it, of course. A trail of... cleanliness. A pristine path left in the wake of someone who clearly had an eye for detail... and probably also someone who was tired of strands of wool left everywhere. And at the end of it was a familiar face!

“Kirumi! Yeah, it’s me. It’s good to see you too!”

I grinned. Of course... if anyone would be here cleaning away, it would be Kirumi Tojo.

home. one place korekiyo didn’t miss. neither the killing game or his life beyond it. neither had things to offer. if there was one thing he missed, it was traveling. he was stuck to this one city. but at least there was enough people to learn about. 

“i don’t know if or how that is possible here. i have noticed people vanishing, but once again, the selection process is too random.”

“Oooh... that sounds like a good idea...”

I almost could have started humming in joy when Kiyo brought up the idea of a music shop. What a perfect opportunity! I’ll find some new music and lose myself in it, and I’ll put all that killing stuff behind me for good.

     Alyssa was, for the lack of a better word, not sure how to respond to that. The other girl seemed…hesitant? Maybe she thought she wouldn’t believe her or something like that. What would be crazier than walking up in a city populated with mostly sheep, not really knowing how you got there?

     Okay, there probably was weirder that could happening, but that’s the weirdest that’s happened to her. Still, shouldn’t she at least try and help the other girl? Maybe she can’t understand her situation, but she could try to at least help her, right?

     After all, that’s just how she is.

     “Well…if you’re sure then, okay. It’s just, you shouldn’t keep everything to yourself you know. If you can, you should tell someone about your struggles and burdens. It might not take all of the pain away, but it’s certainly something that can help.”

“Oh, don’t worry, it’s nothing!”

I brushed it away, beginning to think that maybe I should drive the topic somewhere else. As much as I appreciate the girl’s concern and curiosity, it’s probably best not to talk about all that. Not with people who weren’t part of it, at least.

“In any case, sorry about that. Uh, I’m Kaede, Kaede Akamatsu. And you?”

As long as this is my situation, I might as well make friends like I always do.

✝ : thankfully, she still remained clueless. a topic as heavy as your own death might be a little harsh to just suddenly drop on someone, especially someone as fragile as akamatsu was. maybe fragile wasn’t the right word… painfully optimistic comes back to mind. that was more accurate. the time will come. he might not even end up the person who tells her. 

“that is more like you. i would have to think you’ve changed if you didn’t look at this situation with positvity. there are resources upon resources for the people here to live a comfortable life. it is almost picture perfect.”

“Well, you’ve got me there. That’s kind of my thing...”

I giggled. Kiyo’s right, after all. If there’s one thing I’m proud of aside from my piano skills, it’s my optimism... whenever I’m not panicking, of course.

“And if this city really is that good, it’s definitely the better end of the kidnapping bargain! Even if I still kinda want to go home.”

“Yes forgive me human, you certainly did not deserve such a speech!” He huffed, honestly a little disappointed it wasn’t his friend. He was really hoping for matched excitement, not the usually confusion and dislike. He usually wouldn’t mind but he certainly was a little excited to finally have the only friend who got excited with him!

“I suppose however, I should grace you with somewhat of an apology. As I was told by the only one who rues over me that I must work on my courtesy to continue my work!” He smirked from beyond the scarf, crossing his arms.

“I shall assist you in whatever endeavor you so wish. It is but a small task for an overlord such as myself.” Gundham deeply chuckled as a few squeaks emitted from the wrappings around his neck. Which in turn caused him to chuckle louder. 

“Consider this a treat from my own kindness.”

It took me a moment to realize he wasn’t just spouting nonsense. He’s actually saying what he wants to say with those weird words...? I paused to parse the boy’s meaning. Uh... the one who rules over him... wants him to be nicer? Maybe he’s talking about that friend he thought I was.

“I appreciate the, uh, offer, but all I’m really doing is taking a walk... There’s not much you can do to help with that, unless you wanna come along with me.”

It would make for good conversation... or at least conversation. Also why is he squeaking like that. That’s a little weird...
