Apple Blossom Connections I Noticed in Welcome Home! 💖🌸🍎
These are all just random things I’ve noticed, and I’m sure they’re not intentional, but they’re fun to think about—especially since this is my favorite ship in the series.
Wally and Julie seem to be wearing matching outfits in this picture. Or, at the very least, Wally put on a red cardigan to match Julie’s dress.
This is something a lot of couples do in real life, and it’s very strange that we’ve never seen Wally wear this red cardigan in any other context. Sure, you could argue that the Welcome Home Restoration Team accidentally colored his cardigan red in this one picture, but there aren’t any coloring mistakes like this in any other piece of artwork. Because of that, it feels really intentional.
I don’t know… it’s just not like Wally to change his cardigan, so it genuinely feels like he put on this outfit just so he could match Julie. You know, dressing up for your date, as one does.
In the Welcome Home Halloween special, “Happy Haunting to Boo and Yours,” Wally is dressed like a little devil, while Julie is dressed like a witch.
Now, I could absolutely be reading too much into this, but witches in medieval folklore we're sometimes portrayed as brides of the Devil or were often associated with the Devil in medieval European folklore. Considering that Wally originally had a religious theme, I can’t help but wonder if this was intentional….
Yes, I know that’s no longer canon, but it’s still a strange coincidence.
I mean, there’s literally a piece of artwork where he’s posing similarly to the famous Baphomet statue. Now, Baphomet isn’t actually part of Satanic practices, but it eventually became associated with them regardless.
I also can’t help but think this was a deliberate choice because Frank is dressed as a vampire and Eddie is dressed as Frankenstein’s monster.
Both of these horror icons have very prominent queer readings, and if I remember correctly, Eddie was originally supposed to be a scarecrow before they changed his costume to Frankenstein’s monster.
Maybe they changed it because of the themes of yearning that many queer people associate with the story. It’s the classic idea of wanting to be accepted, being treated as an outcast for who you are, and exploring what it means to be human.
I highly recommend looking into queer readings of these characters and stories because it’s honestly too much to simplify in this post.
Either way, you get my point, right? Wally being the Devil and Julie being a witch feels like a pairing that was chosen on purpose, even if they aren’t actually meant to be a couple. It definitely gives off that vibe.
I mean… come on… for better or worse…. Witches are often portrayed as brides of the Devil.
Connection #3: The Symbolism of Their Flowers
Okay, this is probably the biggest stretch.
Huge disclaimer: I am not an expert on Victorian floriography. I literally only did about an hour of research, and I’m pretty sure that’s nowhere near enough to understand how complex this entire subject is. Different flowers have different meanings, different colors change those meanings, and combining flowers creates entirely new messages.
I think most of us can agree that in the Floriography board game, Julie is represented by a primrose, while Wally is represented by an auricula (or an acacia, depending on which name you use).
Generally speaking, an auricula can symbolize elegance, sophistication, and artistic creativity, which describes Wally pretty well.
However, in Victorian floriography, the meaning is a little different.
If I remember correctly, an auricula generally symbolizes friendship, while a yellow auricula can symbolize secret love.
The primrose, on the other hand, has a much more straightforward meaning. It generally symbolizes youth, young love, and protection.
Now, combining flowers can create entirely different meanings. Because I found several conflicting sources online, I actually came across multiple interpretations.
One of the more positive meanings I found was:
“I have confidence in our young love.”
However, another interpretation described the combination as expressing deep devotion that borders on obsession—essentially:
“I can’t live without you, but you must not demand too much of me.”
Yet another interpretation I found was:
“I am deeply charmed by your youth and beauty, but don’t let my affection drive you to impatience or greed.”
Now, this might not be 100% accurate. Like I said, I dug through three different articles, and they all contradicted each other in one way or another.
Still, the general ideas stayed pretty consistent. Primroses were associated with young love, while auriculas were associated with friendship, creativity, or even secret love depending on the color.
And, of course, if this were an actual Victorian bouquet, there would probably be far more than just two flowers. People could practically write entire messages through flower arrangements, so it’s an incredibly complicated subject.
This all just fits Wally surprisingly well.
Especially if you lean into the theory that he’s secretly evil—which, to be clear, we still don’t know. Even so, the more obsessive interpretation of pairing an auricula with a primrose is definitely interesting.
I’m not trying to argue that Wally and Julie are 100% canon. Like I said, this is probably all completely unintentional.
Honestly, I’m mostly talking about this because they’re my favorite ship.
But I don’t know… this is all such good fodder for fanfiction, and the thought of these two together just makes me want to kick my feet, smile, and giggle to myself like a schoolgirl. 😭💖
What can I say? I’m an incredibly hopeless romantic… and it’s even better when the romance comes with a little bit of angst.
