cw: alcohol, homophobia, violence, blood
âSay it again, motherfucker,â Remus spits, hands flexing in the air. He makes a fist, releases it, lets it form again, over and over and over.
Unimpressed, the drunken asshole who started this whole thing just scoffs, swaying on his feet. âWhat the fuck are you gonna do about it if I do? Nothinâ,â the guy spits at Remusâs feet.Â
Heâs big; bigger than Remus, by far. His arms strain against the confines of his shirt, almost threatening to tear the stitches. He is ugly, face contorted and swollen from what has surely been a rough life full of fighting and alcohol in a constant cycle. Remus doesnât know this man. Heâs never said two words to him before tonight, despite having seen him in this particular bar on more than one occasion. Now, as he flexes his fists and tries to figure out the best trajectory for his first punch, Remus wants to make him unrecognizable.
The guy is sizing Remus up too. He takes in his height, then his frame, and he decidesâfoolishlyâthat Remus is no threat to him. âI said,â he slurs, smirking smugly and pointing off to the side, âheâs a fucking fa-â
Before Remus can react, the person the drunk was pointing at has shot forward and stolen the first punch. Stolen is a strong word, seeing as it was him the guy was talking about, but still. Remus was so ready to throw the first punch. Five minutes ago, Remus had been sitting at the bar waiting for his drink. The scene played out in the background, with Remus watching from his periphery.Â
It went as follows: Ugly Man throws back his 11th shot of the night. He wants to play darts, the bartender, Remusâs friend Lily, says no, Ugly Man goes into a strop and gets up to try to take someone elseâs darts. Ugly Man is chastised by the bouncer, Remusâs friend Gideon, which causes him to stumble. Ugly Man knocks a drink out of the hands of the most breathtaking person Remus has ever seen. It literally takes his breath away, causing him to sit up straighter to catch it while he watches. The spilled drink soaks Ugly Manâs shirt, which makes him angry immediately at The Breath-Thief. The Breath-Thief apologizes even though it is not his fault, pressing a handful of bar napkins up against Ugly Manâs shirt. Ugly Man slaps the napkins out of The Breath-Thiefâs hands, looks The Breath-Thief up and down, and sneers, mumbling something that Remus cannot hear but is clearly uncalled for. The Breath-Thiefâs face grows wary, angry, slightly afraid? Remus stands. Ugly Man sways on his feet, points his finger in The Breath-Thiefâs face, and yells at him to keep his hands away from him. Then he calls him a string of slurs that Remus is all too familiar with, and Remus is across the room before he knows it. Remus grabs Ugly Manâs shoulder, wrenches him around to face him instead of The Breath-Thief, tells him to say it again, and that brings us to the present moment, where The Breath-Thief has just sucker punched Ugly Man in the jaw.
Unfortunately, it seems as if The Breath-Thief has never thrown a punch in his life. He is shaking his hand out and looking down at his knuckles when Ugly Man recovers from the blow and retaliates, landing a punch of his own right on The Breath-Thiefâs cheekbone. Ugly Man is wearing a wedding ring (poor woman, whoever she is) which splits the delicate, unblemished skin there. Remus curses himself quietlyâhe shouldnât have taken his eyes off of Ugly Man. He knows better than to take his eyes off of his opponent, and itâs clear that The Breath-Thief does not. Remus was too distracted by The Breath-Thief being distracted to notice that while Ugly Manâs lip has puffed up, he did not go down by any means.Â
The Breath-Thief does not go down either, but he does take a few steps back. He seems to have friends here with him that do not know how to fight either, though they seem less willing than he was to give it a shot. Remus grins, knowing that the fight is his now. He whistles to get Ugly Manâs attention, and when he swings his head around, Remusâs fist is crashing through in the other direction to meet it. The punch lands with a dull smack, knuckles meeting skin as he hits Ugly Man exactly where he had hit The Breath-Thief. In a perfect scenario, this would be the end of it and Remus would walk away unscathed. This is not a perfect scenario, because apparently Ugly Man has some fight left in him. He hits back, which Remus blocks, but then he uses his size to his advantage and tackles Remus to the ground. Remus has been here before, though, and it doesnât break his focus in the slightest. He simply takes the punch, absorbs the fall, and uses the momentum to get the upper hand.
Remus knees Ugly Man in the side, Ugly Man punches Remus in the mouth. Remus doesnât care. He punches Ugly Man in the stomach, which gives him just enough room to flip them. He gets hit a few more times in the process, but itâs not a problem. Remus knows that when theyâre flipped itâs a done deal. Heâs won the fight. He has the upper hand and he doesnât stop punching until Ugly Man literally, genuinely taps out. No one even tried to stop them; not the bartender, not the bouncer, not Ugly Manâs friends, no one. It seems that no one wanted to stop him getting what was coming to him. It helps that Remus is close personal friends with both the bouncer and the bartender, but still.Â
Ugly Man has only been made uglier by the beating Remus gave him, all red and glistening and bruised. Remus hates him, he thinks, as he watches Ugly Manâs friends haul him up and to the bathroom with Lilyâs blessing to get him cleaned up before they get the fuck out. Gideon pulls Remus over to a booth and presses an ice filled rag he must have gotten from Lily over what definitely feels like a cut on his eyebrow. He may have won, but Ugly Man didnât give up easily. Itâs only now that the adrenaline rush is subsiding that he starts to feel the pain setting in and the sensation of wetness on his face. That canât be good.
âIs it bad, Gid?â he asks with a grimace.
âPfft, no, this is nothing!â Gideon murmurs good-naturedly, âYou should see the other guy.â
Remus gives him his best attempt at a smile, which Gideon quickly tells him might not be a good idea. Gideon is about to tell him something else, but heâs interrupted by the arrival of The Breath-Thief himself.
âCould I take over?â he asks, inclining his head towards the makeshift ice pack Gideon is still holding to Remusâs face. Remus almost wishes that Gideon would say no, knowing that he definitely doesnât look his best anymore. Despite the slightly swollen cut on his cheek, The Breath-Thief is still stunning. Perfect. Remus doubts very much that The Breath-Thief will think anything like that about him.
Gideon just hands the rag off and gives Remus a half salute, and then Remus is alone with The Breath-Thief, who is standing very close to him now.
âWhatâs your name?â asks The Breath-Thief as he presses the ice gingerly back onto Remusâs eyebrow.
âRemus,â he breathes out, trying not to wince as he does. His lip is definitely split. This conversation is more important. âWhatâs yours?â
âSirius,â The Breath-Thief responds with a smile. Sirius.
âLike the star?â Remus asks, thinking that if heâs correct, itâs as fitting a name for him as a name could be. The brightest star in the sky. Breathtaking.
Sirius lights up, laughing, âYep, like the star. Iâm surprised you know that; most people think I mean âseriousâ, which would be a horrible name.â
âSirius is a really good name,â Remus says, unable to get his brain to think of anything clever at all with Sirius moving to sit next to him in the booth.
âOnly good thing my parents ever gave me,â Sirius nods as he gets comfortable. Remus doesnât know what to say to that, so he just stays quiet and lets his eyes roam over Siriusâs features. He looks like heâs been sculpted out of fine marble.
âYou didnât have to do that,â Sirius says.
Remus blinks, then shrugs. âI know. I wanted to.â
âIâve heard it all before, what he said about me.â
âMe too. Sâwhy I wanted to,â Remus tells him, then wipes his lip on the back of his hand. The red stands out against his skin, but it doesnât bother him. It never has.
âYou know, it really seemed like you knew what you were doing back there. Makes me wonder why you didnât knock him out,â Sirius muses, tucking a few strands of inky black hair behind his ear.
âI couldnât just knock him out,â Remus tries, but itâs no good.
âYou couldâve, though, right? He was off balance, and he certainly didnât have half the skill you do. You had technique, he had brute force. You didnât have to beat the shit out of him like that. Donât you know how to knock someone out?â Sirius asks, moving the ice to a different part of Remusâs face. Heâs gotten closer as they talk, only a few inches away now.
Remus canât help but smile then, having been called out. He didnât expect to be seen like that. âI know a lot of ways to knock someone out.â
âThen why didnât you?â Sirius asks, the ice-filled rag coming to rest with his hand by Remusâs thigh. Remus doesnât mind that he stopped; thereâs new adrenaline rushing in his veins now to take the sting away.
Remusâs lip twitches up as he reaches out to cup his hand over Siriusâs jaw. He runs his thumb softly over the soft skin of his cheek, right under the cut that Ugly Man left there. There is a trail of still-wet crimson there, only just now starting to become sticky, and Remus pulls his hand away to look; to show Sirius.Â
âHe made you bleed.â
[grabs your shirt] listen. listen to me. the practical is holy. the everyday is sacred. the simple act of surviving is divine. do you get it? sanctity begins at home, in the hands that build and the lives we live and the deaths we die and the worms that eat our bodies. if making something by hand is not worthy of veneration then nothing is.
Craving wolfstar lately đșâš
remus going âi dont wanna go on blind dates what if i get stood up?â and sirius going âthen you call me and then we go eat togetherâ
and so remus pretends to be continuously stood up just so he and sirius can go on a âdateâ

How to Find a Werewolf (a week before the full moon)
The title will probably change lmfao
7 days
Sirius notices the signs from the moment Remus is awake. He's flinching every single time a fork hits a plate in the wrong way, for starters. Sirius ends up gently kicking both James and Peter, forcing them to catch on. It's clearly much too loud in the hall itself, Remus is barely contributing. Not for lack of trying, but he seems more than a little dissociated.
Then it's the walking.
As much as he's trying to hide it, the slight exhales that come with every step is enough to show Sirius that he's in pain. The hip's usually the first of his joints to start acting up, so Sirius wordlessly starts picking up and shoving Remus' textbooks into his own bag. Thankfully, Remus isn't ready to bicker about that.
No, it's much too early for that.
5 days
It's two in the morning when Sirius notices.
He's a light sleeper, so Remus' tossing and turning is more than enough to wake him up.
For a moment he just observes carefully. He knows full well that Remus is going to be exhausted, and the fact that he's still up means his skin must be crawling.
"Moons?" He says softly, and Remus stops in his tracks.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you."
"Nah, s'fine," Sirius waves him off easily. "We can go sit by the window, if you want?"
For a moment, he thinks Remus is going to say no and resign to a sleepless night, but instead he just sighs.
"...yeah. If that's okay."
Sirius is already sliding out of their bed, glancing at James and Peter to make sure they're still asleep. Then, he reaches out and offers Remus his hand. Remus takes it, letting himself be led to the big window. The windowsill was charmed years ago. Initially it was to fit the four of them, but four seventh years can't fit on it even when it's been extended. Two, though? It's absolutely perfect.
That's how the two of them end up sitting together on the sill, Sirius wedging the window open slightly and letting the cool air hit them both. He can see the way Remus relaxes as he starts to cool down, eyes sliding shut. He leans his head back against the wall, and Sirius smiles to himself as Remus finally starts to fall asleep.

It doesn't take long for the anger to hit.
Remus isn't what people expect when they think of a werewolf before the full moon. He doesn't have all consuming, blinding rage. There's no world where Remus Lupin will turn and start screaming at teachers.
Instead, it usually starts pretty suppressed.
At breakfast, he sees Remus' hand tighten around his goblet the moment Snape strolls past, making another snide comment about the moon. It's enough for Sirius to make a mental note not to push anything too far. Bickering can turn into real fighting and hurt feelings much too quickly around the full.
James, however, hasn't caught onto the timeline the way Sirius has.
They can all see Remus fighting his own tiredness in the common room, quill in hand as he absentmindedly tries to do his homework. Remus' handwriting is shit at the best of times, but before the full? It's barely legible.
Sirius' solution is to walk over and sit beside Remus, not saying a word and just making sure Remus knows he has support.
"Moony, you might need to take a break," James says softly, and Sirius almost sighs.
Poor bugger.
"I'm fine," Remus starts, and Sirius feels him tense up beside him. He tries to shoot James a glance that essentially means 'stop fucking talking', but he doesn't get the hint.
"Minnie's offered you an extention. It's probably best to wait until you feel better."
"Christ, I said I was fine! Get off my fucking back!" He snaps, James lapsing into silence.
Okay, it's hit him too.
Sirius tries to wrap an arm around Remus' shoulder, but he's shaken off like it's nothing, Remus standing. He winces as he does it, and Sirius forces himself to take a breath, not get too het up about that.
"You all just need to fuck off! You're all so bloody clingy!"
With that, he's gone. He turns and walks upstairs, and Sirius just shrugs at James.
"Give him a day, it'll be fine."
1 day
Remus doesn't get out of bed the day before.
Sometimes he does, but recently his good days before the moon are getting fewer and further between. The only reason Sirius actually bothers to go to his morning classes is to take notes for Remus, and he makes Pete promise to get Remus' notes for his last few.
That sorted, he heads up to the dorm, a hot chocolate he got from the kitchen in hand. Knocking once, he pushes the door open to find the curtains drawn in the room, the whole dorm flooded in darkness.
"Moony?"
For a moment, he thinks he's asleep, until-
"M'fine." His voice is rough, sounds almost like he's been crying.
Yeah, this is definitely one of the bad ones.
He steps into the room, letting the door shut behind him as he gets to Remus' bed. At first, he sits on the edge of it, Remus not moving.
"I've got hot chocolate?" He tries.
"...could you put it on the bedside table?" Sirius nods, setting it down.
"D'you need anything?" He asks gently. Not that he needs to ask, he knows what the answer is going to be.
"If you- maybe you could... stay?"
He doesn't waste a moment in climbing into the bed with his partner and wrapping his arms around Remus' waist from behind.
"Sorry I was such a twat before," Remus says quietly, and Sirius smiles to himself.
"Don't worry about it."
To be fair, his body is literally getting ready to break itself. In what world is he going to have boundless excitable energy?
Sirius just wants to take care of him.
"I love you," He says softly, shifting his weight to reach up and press a kiss to Remus' temple.
"I love you too."
