Remus was starting to think there was something wrong with him. All his friends were pairing off, and he wasn’t. He had zero desire to be necking some bird in a broom cupboard or worse. He understood the fundamentals of sex, but the desire to try it out for himself hadn’t happened yet, not like everyone else, at least. He was sure any day now he’d feel the desire they all went on about, but right now he was just happy to be with his friends.
The party was only small, intimate. Sixth years only. They were sitting in a circle with an empty butterbeer bottle in the middle. James leaned forward and spun it. It landed on Lily, so they leaned across the circle and kissed, in front of everybody. Remus’s collar suddenly felt too tight. He didn’t want to do this. Why had he been so stupid to sit with them? Because there hadn’t been another option. No one else had sat out. Lily spun the bottle, and it landed on Sirius. She wrinkled her nose at him, but still gave him a quick peck. Now it was Sirius’s turn. Remus watched as the brown glass bottle spun around, the neck pointing at everyone in turn, slowing down with each rotation until it landed on him. He was going to be sick.
There must have been something of his fear in his eyes as Sirius paused.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” he said gently. Remus felt his cheeks turn beet red. Everyone was watching. “Remus,” Sirius’s soft voice broke through his panic. Sirius leaned over the gap, and Remus’s heart thudded frantically. Sirius’s cool grey eyes assessed him, and a fond smile curved his lips. He reached down for Remus’s hand and placed a kiss on the back of his hand. Remus let out a long breath of relief and quickly took Sirius’s hand and copied the movement. That he could do. That was fine. He grinned up at Sirius, who winked at him, and he felt himself blushing again. “My turn again!” Sirius boomed and spun the bottle before anyone could protest. “PETER! GIVE US A SNOG!!!” And he launched himself at Peter, taking all the attention away from Remus.
Later that evening, Sirius plonked himself beside Remus, snuggling into his side and pulling one of Remus’s arms around him. He loved this. Loved the closeness. If he could have this all the time, he’d be beyond happy, but no one wanted that, did they? They’d always want more. More he couldn’t give.
“Love you, Moony,” Sirius sighed, nuzzling against his neck.
“Love you, too, Pads,” Remus returned, his hand lazily stroking Sirius’s arm.
“Can I sleep with you tonight?”
Remus’s heart thudded as dread flooded his system. “Not like that. Merlin, Moony, your heart’s about to beat out of your chest. I meant sleep, as in snoring into your ear.”
His heart settled down again.
“Yeah, that’s fine.” It wouldn’t be the first time.
Sirius nodded as though something he’d said had just made some sort of sense to him.
“But you don’t want to like shag me or kiss me?”
His heart thundered again, his mouth suddenly dry as he tried to find words to describe how he felt. “Don’t worry, Moony. Your heart answered for you.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“Not feeling the way everyone else does.”
Remus pulled away and looked at him.
“That’s because I’m not. We’re all made differently, Remus, and I love you just the way you are.”
He had no idea what came over him, but his lips were suddenly on Sirius’s, and he was having his first kiss.
It was nice, not mind-blowing like everyone kept saying, but he thought he liked it.
“Thank you,” Sirius said, holding still while Remus processed what he’d just done. He’d kissed Sirius. Sirius, whom he’d known for years and been closer to than anyone else. He looked over at their friends and imagined kissing any of them. He felt ill even trying to imagine it.
“I don’t want to kiss anyone else!” He blurted out, feeling his cheeks heat again.
“And I don’t want to have sex, like at all.”
Sirius’s eyebrows might have lifted a fraction, but the movement was so minute that Remus wasn’t sure.
“Okay. Like with anyone? Even me?”
Remus thought about it hard; his mind shied away from it all. He didn’t want that.
“Even you,” he said quietly, knowing that any second Sirius would leave him to go off with Mary or someone.
“But cuddling and maybe a bit of kissing would be fine by you?” Sirius asked; he seemed to be very interested in how Remus felt all of a sudden.
“Yeah. I think, yeah,” Remus nodded. The thought of kissing Sirius didn’t repulse him as the thought of kissing others did.
Remus blinked a few times, stunned. He’d been asked out by a few people, always saying no immediately, but with Sirius, he paused.
“I know, I’m not asking for that, just this,” he gestured to the way they were cuddling, “and you know the odd kiss when you’re in the mood.”
Remus wanted to cry. No one had ever got him as Sirius did.
“Okay then,” he said shyly, and Sirius smiled his darling smile at him before snuggling back into his side, pulling Remus’s arm tighter around him. Remus smiled uncontrollably down at Sirius. He couldn’t believe that was alright with his weird ways. Maybe he wasn’t as odd as everyone had always told him he was. Sirius against him felt perfect, and without the pressure of sex, he felt for once he could be himself. He kissed the top of Sirius’s head and snuggled up against his boyfriend.
