The world began with the spontaneous generation of four beings: first arose Khaos (Chasm); then came Gaia (Earth), "the ever-sure foundation of all"; and "dim" Tartaros, in the depths of the Earth; and Eros (Desire) "fairest among the deathless gods". From the Chasm came Erebos (Darkness) and Nyx (Night). And Nyx "from union in love" with Erebos produced Aether (Brightness) and Hemera (Day). From Gaia came Ouranos (Sky), the Ourea (Mountains), and Pontos (Sea).

From Gaia’s union with Ouranos, she birthed the twelve Titans: Okeanos, Koios, Krios, Hyperion, Iapetos, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, and Kronos. The Titans each represent qualities of their divine parents, the male Titans being gods of the sky and time, the female Titannes being goddesses of earth and prophecy. Gaia also produced the three Cyclopes, as well as the three Hekatonkheires (“The Hundred-Handed”).

Ouranos, fearing that one of his children would betray him, hid his brood within the body of Gaia, causing her great pain and discomfort. Gaia gave an adamantine sickle to her youngest son, Kronos who, with the aid of his brothers, restrained and castrated the Sky as he bent to mate with the Earth. Ouranos’s blood fell onto the Earth, and the Erinyes (Furies), Giants, and Melial (Ash nymphs) sprang from that union. Where Ouranos’s genitals fell into the sea, foam developed and Aphrodite was borne from the foam.

Nyx produced children parthenogenetically: Moros (Doom), Ker (Destiny), Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), the Oneiroi (Dreams), Momus (Blame), Oizys (Pain), the Hesperides (Sunsets), the Moirai (Fates), the Keres (Destinies), Nemesis (Retribution), Apate (Deceit), Philotes (Love), Geras (Old Age), and Eris (Discord).

Eris followed her mother’s example and produced alone: Ponos (Hardship), Lethe (Forgetfulness), Limos (Starvation), the Algea (Pains), the Hyminai (Battles), the Makhai (Wars), the Phonoi (Murders), the Androktasiai (Manslaughters), the Neikea (Quarrels), the Pseudologoi (Lies), the Amphillogiai (Disputes), Dysnomia (Anarchy), Ate (Ruin), and Horkos (Oath).

After Ouranos’s castration, Gaia went on to produce offspring with her son Pontos. Together they produced a full line of sea deities, nymphs, and monsters. Their children, Nereus and Thaumas, each married offspring of the Titans Okeanos and Tethys, producing a number of sea deities. Amongst their most notable descendants are Amphitrite, Thetis, Iris (Rainbow), and the two Harpies.

Gaia and Pontos’ third and fourth children, Phorcys and Ceto, married each other and produced the Gray Sisters (Graiae) and the three Gorgons (Medusa being one of the three). Poseidon later mated with Medusa to produce the winged-horse Pegasos and the warrior Khrysaor. Ceto and Phorcys also produced the monster Echidna, who would later mate with Typhon and become known as the Mother of Monsters (Orthos, Kerberos, the Hydra, the Khimera, the Sphinx, and the Nemean Lion), as well as the serpent Ladon, who guards the Golden Apples of immortality.

Okeanos, Hyperion, Koios, and Kronos married their sisters Thethys, Theia, Phoebe, and Rhea. Krios married his half-sister Eurybia (a daughter of Gaia and Pontos). Okeanos and Tethys produced three-thousand river gods and three-thousand river nymphs (Metis, Electra, Eurynome, and Styx amongst them).

Theia and Hyperion produced Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon), and Eos (Dawn). Krios and Eurybia produced Astraios, Pallas, and Perses. Eos and Astraios married and produced the Winds: Zephyros, Boreas, and Notos, as well as Eosphoros (Dawn-Bringer, the Morning Star), and the Stars. Pallas and Styx produced Zelos (Envy), Nike (Victory), Kratos (Power), and Bia (Force).

Koios and Phoebe produced the goddesses Leto (mother of the Twins) and Asteria, who would marry Pallas and birth the goddess Hekate. The Titan Iapetos married the Okeanid Clymene, and then produce Atlas, Menoetius, Prometheus (Forethought), and Epithemeus (Afterthought).

Kronos and Rhea would produce Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Poseidon, Haides, and Zeus, who Kronos would then eat one by one until the youngest son, Zeus, freed his family from their father’s belly.

Zeus first married the Okeanid Metis, the goddess of wisdom, whom he swallowed after impregnating her with Athena. Athena was later born from her father’s head.

Zeus then married the Titanne Themis, who bore him the three Horae (Seasons): Eunomia (Order), Dike (Justice), and Eirene (Peace), and the three Moira (Fates): Clotho, Lakhesis, and Atropos.

Zeus’s third wife, Eurynome bore the Kharites (Graces): Aglaea (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Joy), and Thalia (Good Cheer).

Demeter and Zeus were married and produced the spring goddess Persephone.

Zeus then married the Titanne Mnemosyne (Memory), who bore him the nine Mousai (Muses).

The sixth wife of Zeus was Leto, who bore Apollon and Artemis.

Zeus final wife is Hera, who produced Hebe, Ares, and Eileithyia. After Zeus’s parthenogenetic production of Athena, Hera was so enraged that she bore her own son Hephaistos.

Poseidon and Amphitrite were married and produced Triton. Haides and Persephone were married but Hesiod doesn’t mention any children, though other sources frequently mention Melinoe, and the Orphic Mysteries involved worship of the god Zagreos. Ares and Aphrodite bore Phobos (Fear), Deimos (Terror), Eros (Desire), Anteros (Love Returned), Himeros (Sex), and Harmonia (Harmony). Zeus produced Hermes with Atlas’s daughter Maia, Herakles with the mortal woman Alcmene, and Dionysos with Harmonia’s daughter Semele. Dionysos later married Ariadne, daughter of King Minos. Hephaistos married Aphrodite until he discovered her affair with Ares, after which he married one of the Kharites, Aglaea. Herakles married Hebe after his apotheosis.
