Celestial Sphere – Paul Manship (1934)

The sculpture is a three-dimensional celestial globe designed as a guide to the night sky. The sphere is oriented for a latitude of 40° North, with the North Star at the top and a horizontal band marking the horizon. It depicts 66 constellations, cast in bronze, while the individual stars are rendered in silver according to their correct positions and relative brightness.

Before creating the sculpture, Paul Manship consulted astronomers at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and Harvard University to ensure the astronomical accuracy of the constellations and stars.
