British Hunting Sword, Late 18th Century-Early 19th Century
A top quality English hunting sword or hanger, from the reign of George III, featuring a heavily blued and gilded blade. The straight, unfullered blade being 58cm long and single-edged, with a short false edge. The GR III monogram is engraved deeply in the blued section of the blade and then highlighted with gilding. On the other side is the Royal coat of arms and on both sides are additional motifs including stands of arms. The hilt with s-quillons and side shell having fittings of gilt brass, with an antler grip bound with copper wire. Housed in its matching scabbard (with period repair), with gilt brass fittings and matching original by-knife, having antler grip scales to a full tang, with a rounded-tip. Overall length in scabbard 74cm.
