a random list of things you might not remember if you weren’t there while Yuuri on ice was just coming out because I was in a mood:

-when the trailer/preview dropped and everyone was like “uuuh looks gay” and then the actual first episode came out and we were like. Yep. Called it

-when someone finally translated Stammi Vicino and everyone got really excited because it was explicitly mlm

-for about the first three weeks everyone was like “there is no way this show can get any gayer” and then it regularly did so we all just gave up

-when people caught on the fact that the opening changed details with every new episode and got really excited, and that one person who made side by side comparisons of all openings every week

-that very short period of time when we genuinely couldn’t tell if Yurio was meant to be an antagonist or not

-I’m pretty sure Evgenia Medvedeva was there from the start and there was just this. Surreal feeling that along with all of us trash goblins one of the rising stars of the figure skating world was also very emotional over these anime boys

-on that note, those actual figure skating fans who were delivering a ton of meta over what actual skaters the characters were based on

-when everyone lost it after ep3 came out and we were all like! did Victor just tell Yuuri he loves him through food metaphors??

-just. “I’m a pork cutlet bowl fatale that enthralls men”. that was good shit

-the “Victor is going to leave Yuuri and break his heart!” discourse that came with that episode

-and then we all kinda calmed down with episode four and I remember everyone crying because,,,, they took one whole episode just for character development,,,,, we stan one (1) good anime

-the smol japanese skater that got really excited about meeting Yuuri and we were all like “mood”

-also when Christophe was introduced and everyone was just like, WHAT THE FUCK

-when ep6 came out with the preview for ep7 and everyone was like. THEY DIDN’T SHOW ANYTHING TOO GAY IN THE PREVIEW WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? SHOULD WE WORRY???? (no literally I just found some screenshots of a text I sent to a friend of mine that says “the preview doesn’t look gay enough and I don’t trust that”)

-when ep. 7 dropped and everyone and their mother lost their shit and YOI trended for a whole week on tumblr and people were joining the fandom in HORDES which to this day is probably still the most surreal fandom experience I’ve ever had

-idk if this was a universal thing but the italian subfandom had all those michele crispino memes about wine

-also when Sara Crispino got introduced and the subtitles said Sala and everyone was crying because it was just really bad

-everyone shouting to know Victor’s backstory

-that whole week of being 100% convinced Makkachin would die, fun times

-when episode? 10 I think? came out and it was revealed that Yuuri had seduced Victor at the afterparty the previous year and everyone was LOSING IT

- that whole episode just killed everyone tbh

-also Otabek showed up and people were thirsting reaaal hard

-the Otayuri discourse which I’m assuming continues to this day

-HAMSTER META

-“I will give you something gold and shiny for your birthday” and everyone being like. Are they tricking us into thinking it’s a medal when it’s, in fact, a wedding ring, or are they tricking us into thinking it’s a wedding ring when it is, in fact, a medal?

-everyone crying after episode 11 and all the meta on what was gonna happen. I think the general opinion was that Yuuri would win gold and then he and Victor would retire together lmao

-also when it got strongly implied that Christophe had a boyfriend and people got really emotional, that was cute

-I just remember everyone dying over the final episode, with the freaking Stammi Vicino duet, tbh

-overall it was just a freaking wild experience and two years later I’m still so glad I was there for that

‘to all the boys i’ve loved before’ aka the title of a viktuuri uni au fic wherein yuuri thinks he’s fallen in love at first sight w 5 different guys on campus not knowing its actually 1 guy named victor playin and cyclin thru different aesthetics

1. running man

running man is always sweat-glossy and wears a headband in a way that is absolutely devastating. he’s honestly a bit of a blur because he’s constantly moving but his head tilts toward the sun like he’s blooming for it and it’s super beautiful

2. blind as a bat

night on the town wears a lot of tight, flashy clothing. he smells really good, almost dizzying. he dresses like he doesn’t plan on coming home that night. he makes yuuri feel like he has the swagger to offer to buy him a drink. makes yuuri feel like he has the money to buy him all the drinks he wants. the light catches on him, on the glitter on his face, on the compact mirror glued to his hand. he speaks—fast. too quickly for yuuri to understand. yuuri’s not even sure he speaks english

4. rich international student

rich international student definitely doesn’t speak english. also, all the international students are rich, but rich international student is RICH rich. yuuri can just tell, from the way he walks, like he has all the time in the world. from the way he dresses, like the watch on his wrist could pay for yuuri’s tuition. from the way he doesn’t really look at people, just glances in their general direction, like he can’t be bothered. he honestly seems like an asshole, but in the way that yuuri’s kind of embarrassingly aroused by it. yuuri thinks the way his leather shoes click against the stone of the courtyard is a form of asmr

5. i’m home

i’m home is—okay, yuuri’s never actually seen him. not his face, at least. yuuri has seen big fluffy sweaters. yuuri has seen big fluffy towels wrappped around a head. yuuri has seen too-short pajamas that end at the knees, and a silk robe with matching slippers. he’s yuuri’s neighbor, and he always announces when he’s home. and the university apartment walls are kind of thin, so yuuri always hears it. the announcement’s probably not for yuuri; he’s deduced that his neighbor has a dog. yuuri hears the soft yips, the scratchy claws against hardwood floor. i’m home has another name: sign here please. this is because he is an avid online shopper. he gets takeout delivered a lot. yuuri was actually in the elevator with him once, but didn’t realize it was him until he reached his door and heard the door across the hall being unlocked too. by the time yuuri turned around his neighbor was singing “i’m home” to his dog and kicking the door shut behind him

So, just imagine for a second Yuuri and Phichit having a movie night in college. They’ve rented The Princess Bride because Taylor in Comms 220 said it was a classic and “Oh my God if you haven’t seen it you haven't lived.” Phichit, of course, loves it, and it grows on Yuuri because it’s sappy and cute and it makes him laugh.

But fast forward a few years to when Yuuri’s back in Japan being coached by Victor Nikiforov aka his biggest celebrity crush ever. And Victor gives him instructions, of course, because he’s a good coach. And sometimes, rather, a lot of times, Yuuri replies with a simple “as you wish”.

Victor doesn’t get the reference.

Until about a year later, when he sits down with his darling fiancée for a movie night. And the first time he hears Westley’s iconic line, he just chuckles a little- “Yuuri, that’s your thing right?” But then the grandfather starts talking about how when Westley was saying ‘as you wish’ what he really meant was ‘I love you’.

And Victor looks at Yuuri.

And looks at the screen.

Then back at Yuuri again.

And has a small existential crisis.

Viktor is not into flamboyant clothes

Hey, unpopular opinion probably. I know loud clothes and especially womenswear are fun to write and draw (heck I used to be a womenswear designer), but there is no canon indication Viktor Nikiforov is into bright color, patterns, flowy things, dresses or anything of the type. Quite the opposite!

(We’ll ignore official art that are collabs because those tend to force the characters into outfits that don’t always fit)

First consider his skating outfits. Young Viktor was adventurous, but adult Viktor has very specific taste. You can see all his costumes have classic menswear elements like collars, lapels, epaulettes, doublebreast, waist darts, and the silhouettes are cut close and simple. He is also, apparently, really into chains…

Now, coach Viktor. You know the opportunity to wear a 3-piece suit is part of what makes him love being a coach. Do we even need to discuss his love of tailored outerwear?

And Yuuri, of course Yuuri.

Casual clothes, he’s actually a minimalist. His blazers are almost all double vented so he obviously pays close attention to style, but everything is very classic and understated.

One thing that fandom sometimes gets wrong is that he is NOT into colors and prints! We really only ever see him in blue and neutrals. Are you gasp afraid of color, Viktor?
