He shields Jane with his body, even mindful of how to hold his dagger so it won’t hurt her. He pushes Jane out of danger instinctively, without a second thought. You can’t do that if you’re not protective by nature. There is a moment that you can see he has realized that he is going to die. There’s a flicker of resignation on his expression. But then Thor saves him and…Loki didn’t expect it, didn’t expect that Thor sees him across the field or care enough to save him after everything. And it breaks my heart every time. Because he always keep an eye on his friends and protects them. It’s been what he was doing probably most of his life with Thor and W4 if the way he fights in Jotunheim along side them is any indication. The way he observed all of them during the fight, and came to Fandral’s rescue when he needed it. But he doesn’t expect to be saved, to be protected. And perhaps at this point doesn’t even consider himself worthy of that, to the point that he doesn’t expect it of Thor, heroic Thor, his brother and friend for a thousand years. And interesting thing is later Thor isn’t surprised that Loki came to rescue him. No, he was probably sure of it. His brother was always beside him and Thor despite everything that went wrong between them, still trusts Loki with his life and is assured in his belief that Loki will protect him. I can even imagine a conversation before battle. Thor asking Loki to not leave Jane no matter what happens. And Loki laughing dismissively, saying he won’t interfere with Thor’s battle. But in the end, he didn’t listen.
