Making a ‘The Elder Scrolls’ style fantasy world -
I think dinosaurs are underrated in fantasy, and usually when they are represented, it’s something basic like a featherless T-rex. Morrowind has some dinosaur-esque creatures, and they are nice. I wanted to make some dinosaurs for one of the environments, I still haven’t placed all the provinces and regions on the map I’ve made; however, I’d like to create some mood sketches for different biome ideas. This is one of those. The closest comparison in TES to this region would probably be Stonefalls in Morrowind, but I’m not sure if there will be any large mushrooms… not that my world will have no large fantasy mushrooms, but I might place them elsewhere so that my world isn’t too similar to TES.
The fella on the top is inspired by the Ceratosaurus, of course. I imagine it as more of a predator. The fella on the bottom is inspired by smaller dinosaurs like the Archaeopteryx, one of my favorites, except he ain’t got no arms. I gave him a thick bushy tail to help balance out the body weight. I imagine the little ones steal eggs and young from other creatures.
Working on a The Elder Scrolls inspired fantasy world -
Yesterday I sketched this creature, it lives underground.
The UESP and TIL have been given permission to share something very special with you all. There's been longstanding rumors about the original D&D games that helped influence The Elder Scrolls, with it even rumored that Arena started out as one. While that is a myth, we do have evidence that there were at least two D&D campaigns played by the developers in Tamriel.
Today, with permission from Julian Lefay's family and Bethesda, we would like to share with you the actual notes from those games. We hope you enjoy getting to explore this look into the early history of The Elder Scrolls, and all of the little things that helped build the larger setting within.
You can find them here, and we'll have more exploration of these in the future:
A longstanding myth in the Elder Scrolls community is that the series began as a Pen and Paper RPG using 1st edition Dungeons & Dragons (D&

May I introduce: Corpse Man. Dragon priests are one of my least favorite enemies in Skyrim lmao but I think they're also hella cool so I had the impulsive urge to create one 👁👁
I thought it would be interesting to have a dragon priest be confronted with modern society and the remains of his cult (though I have to say that he didn't fully agree with the dragons at some point nearing the end of the dragon war, which is partly the reason he went into hiding). I actually have a shit ton of more info on him but I'll put all that into his Toyhouse profile once it's fully done.

Ancient skeletons are pretty interesting, and have a lot of different implications depending on their age and former allegiances. So here are two armor concepts I made for one of the main three ancient factions, I’m gonna do three main ones because I feel like it. These are both inspired by ancient Mycenaean designs that I saw online and liked. The bronze is maybe a bit too colorful for skeletons, so I tried to tone it down on the left side fellas armor.
So there were three ancient empires that fought against each other, and there are many tombs left behind that carry the fallen from the war. I’m unsure as to how skeletons rise without the aid of a necromancer, but it’s a pretty common thing in fantasy.
Word Upgrades & Adverb Replacements
Not banning adverbs, just helping you avoid the icky ones.
1. Swap the adverb, not the meaning. Instead of: “He whispered angrily.” Try: “He hissed the words between his teeth.”
2. Replace “said” only when it changes tone. Not every line needs flair! But sometimes: • mused (thinking aloud) • snapped (tension) • muttered (quiet frustration) • chirped (bright and quick)
3. Alternatives to ‘almost’ that aren’t icky. Objects: brushing against, bordering, adjacent to Actions: poised to, ready to, about to States: akin to, resembling, not quite Misc: a whisper from, at the cusp of, within reach of
Example: Instead of: “She was almost smiling.” Try: “A smile hovered at the edge of her mouth.”
Punctuation as a Writing Superpower
Punctuation is mood.
1. Em-dash = drama or interruption. “The decision — reckless as it was — already felt final.”
2. Semicolon = linked thoughts. “The storm hammered the walls; inside, her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.”
3. Colon = emphasis or explanation. “He wanted only one thing: answers.”
4. Ellipses = hesitation or fading thoughts. “I thought I saw someone behind the shed, but…”
5. Intentional fragments = emotional punch. “The letter fell from her hands. Silence. Then breathing. Then panic.”
Making a The Elder Scrolls inspired fantasy world - These are some concepts for “River Elves.” They are inspired by Native Americans, along with some elements from Mongolian armors.
The drawing is kinda green tinted because I lowered the opacity on the flat colors. The dog is supposed to be white and the Elves skin is supposed to be a warmer tone.
The top armor is supposed to be a medium armor, and the bottom one was supposed to be a heavy armor but I’d say it’s more befitting of a guard.
The dog is a unique breed used for hunting river trolls and wild boars. They have small heads but strong bodies, and they excel at swimming due to their strong legs and webbed feet.
These concepts are mainly warrior related but that’s not indicative of their nature, they are as any other race. They may be shaped by their location and history, but the different races have no inherent personality traits. That (inherent personality traits) is something that I dislike about many fantasy worlds; I just think it’s generally kinda boring.
In my fantasy world, I want to have many different cultures inspired by real world cultures. A lot of cultures in The Elder Scrolls are very European, some more so than others. I don’t think that’s all bad, but I like a lot of diversity in fantasy, it’s more interesting.
I might do some concepts of River Elf mages soon, and some architectural stuff.
