Since I’m on a streak of Arley ramblings I think one of my thoughts when revamping Arley to the way she is now was “I think Kieran would benefit from meeting someone similar to him”. Of course not being my main thought, obviously. While she’s very involved with Kieran I hate centering a characters entire existence around another character. ESPECIALLY if they’re a love interest (yuck, where’s the sauce?? The intrigue??)

Anyway. I felt like even after Indigo Disk, Kieran still hasn’t 100% gotten over his insecurities. They’re just.. quieter now, if that makes sense? He may have a forming support system from the league club, but from how he acts in Pokemas I’ve come to the conclusion that he still feels alone in his feelings and experiences. But I had that thought even before he came out in Pokemas, given Arley’s revamp was before then.

So then, though it was when I already had an idea of her new personality in mind, I had the thought midway. This happens a lot with me by the way, be making something and immediately go “oh shit this makes so much sense” sometime in the future when it was unintentional. I thought that one of the most effective ways Kieran might begin to recover was if he met someone similar to him. Someone who feels alone, powerless, weird, and alienated, meets someone who feels the same way for different reasons. And of course the next thought is “how do I build off this concept…”

People have a big love for ships with opposing personalities, I mean… look at some of the ships I have on my own blog. Coughs at Rinyma and Larry. And I think part of this is because it’s an easy way to explore those characters in two entirely unique lenses.

But there is still substance to be found in pairings (whether romantic or not) with similar personalities and conflicts. It becomes a creative exercise because now you have to think harder about what makes these two characters interesting.. what caused them to have such a negative interaction in this scene? What was it that they disagreed on? It forces you to dig into those characters on a level beyond the surface. Think about what their opinions, preferences, pet peeves, and more are, sometimes in a deeper sense than you would with opposing dynamics

And then there’s the beautiful “characters who are similar but think they’re nothing like each other”. But the ocs I’m referring to here aren’t even Pokemon… but Wukong and Macaque from Lego Monkie Kid are good examples here heehee

Uhhh tl;dr: Opposite character dynamics are great but characters with similar personalities, goals, and insecurities force you to think harder about what makes them interesting and I think that’s really fun too
