DIY: Steven Universe/ Rose Quartz Shield Tutorial
Wow! I’ve had a lot of interest and asks about how Rose/Steven’s shield was made, so without any further ado - a tutorial!
Materials List:
A Clear Base (Search for party platters/bowls, plant trays, light shades, sky-light domes, local plexiglass dealers, OR I’ll be selling the blank base since I have a source with a discount - email me at [email protected] for a quote ($20 + shipping for blank base and no paint; $25 + shipping for base with transparent paint, center, spiral, and border painted; or $40 + shipping for base with all paint, gem, and strapping)
Turquoise spray paint (for the edging) - I used Design Master’s “Robin’s Egg” available here but is cheaper at Micheals’ stores (with or without a coupon)
Design Master’s Pinkolicious “Tint It” spray paint (for the background) - this paint will remain transparent even with multiple coats! It’s available here but is cheaper at Michaels’ stores (again, with or without a coupon)
Light Pink spray paint (for the spiral/vine) - I’m pretty sure I used Krylon’s Fairytale Pink “Paint and Primer” but I’m not sure whether it was the “Plastic Fusion” line or not. Any light pink spray paint should do, though.
Turquoise/Teal acrylic paint (for the border on the edging) - I used Americana brand Desert Turquoise and highly recommend it
Lighter pink acrylic paint (for the border on the spiral/vine and thorns and center of the “gem”) - I used FolkArt brand 438 Ballet Pink (but if you can get a similar shade in Americana brand, doooooo it)
Clear Vinyl or Backpack Strapping (for the straps) - I’ve used the vinyl and I’ve used the backpack strapping. Which you use is completely up to you but… I’ve started preferring the backpack strapping.
Clear Gloss spray paint
Masking tape or painter’s tape
Hot Glue
Gorilla Glue
X-Acto Knife (or other detail blade)
Permanent marker and pencil
Ruler and/or drawing compass (Optional)
Scrap paper or cardstock (any paper)
The Follow Materials are Only Needed if You Intend to Use PortadorX’s pepakura gem for the center, as I did!
Pink acrylic paint (for one side of the gem) - I used Americana brand Royal Fuchsia and it was great
Purple acrylic paint (for one side of the gem) - I used Americana brand Purple Pizzazz and again highly recommend it
Thin cardboard (for the gem) - I used boxes from cereal and granola bars. DO NOT USE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD.
Step 1: Wipe down your base with soap and water or rubbing alcohol to remove any finger prints, oils, or debris. This is super important for the tape to adhere properly.
Step 2: Taking your masking or painter’s tape, begin taping across the base from the center outwards. Don’t worry about the tape being straight but be very careful to have it all flat against the shield - no puckers or wrinkles. See Step 3 for an example picture.
Step 3: Start with the border and measure it evenly around the edge with a pencil or other light-colored pen. I did just around an inch as the border on a 16-inch shield and it looked pretty close to the screencaps. Then (if your base doesn’t have a hole in the center, use your ruler to determine the center and draw the spiral/roses and thorns. (I’m sorry I can’t give more tips on the drawing but I completely freehanded it. There are templates available online if you’re not comfortable freehanding.) Once you’re happy with the drawing, go over it with permanent marker.
***Special Tip*** Drawing compasses are fantastic for keeping the center centered. I simply taped a piece of cardboard on the inside to provide an axis point. Also, if you’re making mistakes as you draft the pattern on the shield, don’t rip the tape off or try to erase the pencil marks - just tear off another piece of tape and stick it over the mistake. You can see all the extra pieces of tape on the below picture >.< I
Step 4: Taking your X-Acto knife (or other detail blade), very carefully cut out the spiral/vine and center ONLY. Take your time on this one and make sure the remaining tape is still secure.
Step 5: Take your base outside and lightly spray a coat of Tint It Pinkolicious on the INSIDE of the shield. It’s very important to do it lightly because the Tint It is very thin and runs easily. Allow to dry 20 minutes between each coat. Repeat 3-5 times dependent on evenness and desired transparency. ***Please note*** The color does get darker with each coat.
Step 6: After you’ve gotten the desired color and transparency on the inside and it has fully dried, turn it over (tape side up) and lightly spray a coat of the lighter pink on the spiral and vines. With the Krylon I used, it only took 2 coats to coat it. Allow each to dry thoroughly! ***Please note*** I didn’t tape off the center hole on mine because I figured any splashback would be hidden by the non-transparent center. It was so that worked for me. Dependent on how domed your base is, you may or may not have to tape of any hole in the middle to keep from getting paint vapor on the transparent side.
Step 7: Repeat Step 4, but with the edge. Take your detail knife and gently cut the tape and remove from the edge only. Then take your scrap paper and gently tape it over the center and spiral so it will be protected. Make sure not to tape over the paint itself unless you’re using fragile painter’s tape and the paint has had several days to dry!
Step 8: Spray-paint the edge, tape side up. If you use Design Masters Robin’s Egg as I did, be patient - it was pretty runny and I had to do multiple coats very, very lightly to keep it from running and dripping.
Step 9: Remove the scrap paper and repeat Step 4 with the thorns. With your detail knife, gently cut the tape and remove each thorn individually. Get your light pink and teal acrylic paints. Where the tape stops on the edge, lightly paint a teal border. Where the tape stops on the spiral/vines, lightly paint a light pink border on each side of the vine. Where you cut out the thorns, paint inside the tape cut-out. This will take a couple of coats but it’s worth it. Take your time - this was the slowest part of the whole build for me.
Step 10: Gently - VERY GENTLY - remove the tape from the face of the shield. Tough up any edges with acrylic paint as needed.
Step 11: Print PortadorX’s sapphire pepakura gem (the color will not matter) and adhere to any thin, non corrugated cardboard. Cut and glue to assemble. ***Please note*** I flattened the bottem of PortadorX’s pattern so it would sit flush against the shield.
Step 12: Paint the center of the gem the same light pink as the thorns on the shield. Paint one facet of the gem with your standard acrylic pink. Paint another facet with the purple acrylic. For the third facet, mix the pink and purple together and paint. This should take a couple of coats for each facet. I got this inspiration from an optical illusions gem painting tutorial here.
Step 13: Once the gem is dry, give it several coats of clear, glossy spray paint. Yes, the shield will get the same spray-paint later, but the gem needs extra to keep it from looking like paper and cardboard.
Step 14: Glue the gem to the center and allow to dry thoroughly. (I used hot glue and gorilla glue)
Step 15: Lightly spray the shield (inside and out) with the glossy coat spray paint. Allow to dry super thoroughly - I’m serious. Gloss coat is unforgiving it it’s touched when still tacky.
Step 16: Take the vinyl or backpack strapping and determine how you want to hold the shield (in your hand, on your arm, etc) and measure appropriate length needed to hold or wear the shield. Cut the material into the relative straps. Whether or not you want to “hem” vinyl is up to you - I didn’t worry about it for my sewing machine’s sake. After the straps are cut, take the strapping and put a little bit of both the hot glue and the Gorilla Glue onto the inside of the shield - TRY to keep it under the border or center if you can so that they won’t be visible from the outside. Again, allow the glue to dry thoroughly. I use the combo of Gorilla Glue and hot glue because the hot glue holds it on while the Gorilla Glue cures.
Step 17: Have fun with your brand new shield!
Again, if you want to purchase the blank base, a base with the base paint (transparent, spiral, and border), or the finished shield, please contact me at [email protected]. I do rush orders but I do not have an Etsy or Ebay shop because I’m doing on-demand production and I want to keep overhead low (no listing fees) so that I don’t have to charge more for the shield (Pricing is currently $20 + shipping for blank base and no paint; $25 + shipping for base with transparent paint, center, spiral, and border painted; or $40 + shipping for base with all paint, gem, and strapping) . If you want to verify I’m a real person, I can also be found on Facebook at Kintsugi Cosplay. Thank you for all the interest and support! If anything in the tutorial is unclear, please let me know or send me an ask! I’m happy to help!

Don’t let me draw when I’m supposed to be sleepin it never pans out
I needed to say this because I feel like respect has been forgotten.
isn’t it funny how he thinks it’s his place to defend the guy who paid two men to hold a sign that said “death to all jews” on the internet but didn’t think it was his place to condemn the worst mass shooting in recent history?
I’m sorry Mark, but it’s one or the other. ether you believe it isn’t your place to speak on hate crimes against minorities that you aren’t a part of, or you don’t, but the fact that you chose this topic to brake your silence on and in this way speaks volumes.
“death to all jews” isn’t a joke (and you wanna talk “respect”? how about respecting jews? do jews not count as people in need of respect? cause lemme tell ya, “death to all jews” or “death to” any oppressed minority is beyond disrespectful), and the fact that he even for a second thought to do that tells us everything we need to know about him as a person, and the fact that you think it’s ok to even refer to it as a joke says a lot about you as well (and don’t think I didn’t notice the way you changed your voice, made it deeper, and used the volume and tone to intimidate us into not speaking out. hate to break it to ya but that only works irl).
jewish families have continued to be targeted by nazis. the end of the war never stopped them. anti-Jewish violence is seven times higher than in the 1990s, and 40% of racist violence is against Jews, despite them making up just 1% of the population.
and I’d also like to remind everyone of this
Mark wants to insist that no matter how bad a person someone is, we must treat them with respect, and basic human decency.
tell me Mark, do you think this man will treat us with the same respect that you’re demanding we treat him and those like him?
you say “we’re ether all people who deserve respect or we’re not” and let me make it clear if that image isn’t enough: he thinks we are not, and openly talks about genocide, as nonchalantly as we talk about removing mosquitoes from the planet.
you say “we must take the high road”, and claim it’s hard because it’s “lonely”.
I’m sorry Mark, but it isn’t “hard” because it’s “lonely”, it’s impossible because doing so will result in our deaths. (and btw? what you’re doing here isn’t “the high road” that’s taken a lot of courage to take. it is, in fact, incredibly cowardly)
it is extremely easy to blow us off when you aren’t the one being targeted, when you aren’t the one being dehumanized and treated like a pest in need of extermination.
you aren’t the one scared to go to your place of worship because today could be the day it’s bombed with you in it. you aren’t the one scared walking down the street because today could be the day a police officer decides you’re a threat. you aren’t the one scared to hold the hand of your significant other (let alone kiss) because today could not only be the day that you yourself and your partner are murdered, but that show of affection could be the thing that sets off someone to then go and massacre your community.
if we lived in a world without bigotry, particularly this kind of wildly unchecked racism, maybe. maybe this could be a statement to listen to, or at least think about.
but until men in power stop debating my humanity and wondering how to best rid me from existence, along with everyone else deemed less than human, this could not be more ignorant, silencing, and actively helpful for men like richard spencer.
I want to reiterate something I was having a hard time putting into words last night.
the biggest problem I have with this, is how victim blaming it is.
he targets the entire message at the victims speaking out. he completely glossed over the actions of pewdiepie and focused the entire video on the message that “no matter how bad the person is, they deserve respect”
yet at no point did he call out bigots and tell them “no matter what you think of any minority, they are still human and deserving of respect”
he never addressed anyone besides those calling out bigotry.
and that’s where the problem really lies.
had this been a “hey nazis, jews are people too and deserving of respect, and hey jews nazis are still people too and deserving of respect” I’d have a lot less issue with this message. there’d still be some fucked up things in need of addressing, but at least then truly the intent would have been..at least there would have been an attempt at something good.
but instead this entire video is “hey jews, nazis are people too and deserving of respect” period, end of statement, all while using curse words and volume and clearly barely restrained anger (and everyone knows how violent and dangerous an angry man is).
that is the biggest reason this message is such a mess, and really shows where Mark’s actual morals lie.
@markiplier you got anything to say for yourself? Doubtful, coward.
@markiplier :/
@markiplier
Hey @markiplier You say you’re not above criticism, right? Well, here’s some. Some words, please?
Sure!
The quest against bigotry and hate is a goal that I actively encourage. However, in the fight I see people losing sight of what connects us all.
Because I didn’t talk about what you WANTED me to talk about my entire message must have been invalid, wandering, and I must also be a bigot. But just because it wasn’t what you were looking for doesn’t mean there wasn’t something to learn, on both sides.
I can see that you don’t like me and I’m fine with that. I truly am. And I’m fine if you hate Felix too. That’s the honest truth.
But my message wasn’t about liking everyone you disagree with. I only encourage you to see a fellow human for the entire person that they are.
The main point of my video was that it’s so easy to label people. Because a label is a convenient, easy-to-consume description of a person’s entire existence. And know that I’m not saying people CAN’T be a bigot or a racist or a nazi or a sexist, but understand that when you apply these labels recklessly you gloss over the entirety of who a person is.
You miss the true depth of who they are as a person.
And while that depth may be terrible and their actions abhorrent, if you disrespect the fact that they are just as human as you are you will never learn anything from them. And understand that I’m not saying, “learn and replicate exactly what they’ve done” but rather learn who YOU are in the face of such actions.
It does nothing to label Felix a nazi and demand that everyone agree with you. That doesn’t create dialogue, that doesn’t encourage people to learn, and that definitely doesn’t lead people to help.
Does that mean you have to like and support him? Hell no. Condemn his actions all day long but NEVER FORGET that we are all EQUAL. And a label does not summarize the entirety of who we are.
I know this wont seem satisfying as a proper response, considering I didn’t counter-point the evidence you provided, but I’m not arguing against you about those facts.
Yes, evil exists. Yes, bigotry exists. Yes, people are murdered for it every day.
And I’m fighting against it. Whether you believe that or not, I’m fighting the same fight as you. Even if you think I’m naive, not fighting hard enough, defending the wrong people, I will still encourage you all to show each other the respect you would want for yourselves.
So for those of you who’ve gotten to the end of this long post and feel that I’m still wrong and completely missed the point, that’s fine. If you think I’m a terrible person for my opinion of Felix, that’s fine too. I’m proud of what I’m doing with my life and I’ll continue to fight for good and the equality of all. And I’ll continue to learn.
Just remember that if we want the world to be truly equal, we must all treat each other with respect.
-Mark “Talks Too Much” Iplier
