In survival mode

I feel like I’m drowning, and I’m gasping to assess the situation

I’m frustrated that I can’t see beyond myself. I keep looking at the haggard face in the mirror, thinking, “why are you so tired? why can’t you just figure this out?” and I’m tired of thinking of how tired I am, how bloated I am with these images of failure, shame, and humiliation, of how there’s no one around me that can give me a real, empathetic hug and tell me it’s OK, that the hard things are hard, and so my ego starts where my brain stops as a way of survival.
