We need to talk about Owen Teague’s amazing performance in IT (2017)
Okay. Okay. So, reading the book twice and watching both film renditions of Stephen King’s It multiple times, I have no idea why Owen Teague is not getting oodles of props for his perfectly eerie performance as Patrick Hockstetter.
Like in the first scene he’s in when he’s watching as the boys pass, the look he gives Finn is so great.
Just look at that! Look at that look! It is charged with an uncomfortable amount of sexual energy, and it is perfect. The other guys just look mean, but Patrick looks like he has more than humiliating Richie on his mind.
One thing Pennywise will not hesitate to mention in the book is how little you have to pay Patrick for a blowjob, he’ll even do it for free if you ask. Then in his (book) scene with Henry, there is no doubt in my mind that if Henry hadn’t stopped Patrick, he would have kept escalating.
So yeah, I think Patrick totally gets off on the idea of doing whatever he wants with one of those boys. They’re smaller and weaker, than him, definitely weaker than Henry.
The quality is a mess, but you get the basic sexual predator feel he’s projecting. He’s leading with his groin here, which is obviously such a sexual approach. He’s pushing his hips, his shoulders are elevating quite a bit when he walks, making him seem more threatening, predatorial.
As an actor, I am just, so pleased with the amount of work Owen put onto Patrick even knowing he was an extreme side character and dies first in the gang. We get no obvious screen evidence of Patrick’s sexual preference, and that’s why I appreciate Owen as an actor so much more because that was an actor choice.
