Fandom is weird now. It’s becoming less trusting and friendly, and the Orwellian surveillance issues that are currently running rampant in the USA and UK have bled over into fandom spaces.

I’d read the articles that young people have no privacy and have become so accustomed to it that they enact on themselves. Abstractly I knew this and had accepted it, but it’s only now that I’m seeing it become a major issues.

Obviously part of the problem is I need to become a trusted member of my new fandom. But fandom in general is becoming far more hostile to privacy than even just 5 years ago.

I’ve had to leave 3 servers that want to do age verification. And this is new. Not even 5 years ago when I started zines ppl just turning 18-20 were far more receptive to the ideas espoused by us older folks about not being surveilled. But now it almost feels like they *want* to be surveilled.

They’ve become so used to it from tiktok and their government that they crave it. I’d write a dystopia about it but unfortunately what even is there to say that hasn’t already been said?

If you’re 18-22 now and you’re reading this and willing to listen without immediately calling me suspicious: this is not normal. Age verification will not keep you safe and will not keep minors safe either. It will only lead to the normalization of further surveillance and erosion of your privacy.

I know it can be an unwieldy text especially if you’re not used to reading academic sources, but go read The Panopticon. Watch V for Vendetta or read the comic, read 1984. Watch The Lives of Others and understand the ways this modern era is not so different from the Stasi in the film.

James Milner scored 19 of the 21 penalties he took for Liverpool. When he left the club, the Anfield groundstaff carved out the Kop End penalty spot and gave it to Millie as a goodbye gift.

It made me really emotional. Millie is probably my favourite ever Liverpool player. Always showed class and grit.

I said this to Kiril over text earlier, but I wish that Milly had announced earlier in the season that he was planning on retiring so that he could do a farewell tour and get showered in appreciation wherever he went (at the very least let us say goodbye to him at Anfield)...but that's probably exactly why he didn't because he's so humble.

#i hesitated on bringing this up the past few hours #but i'm going to. i think i knew when milly changed his number to 20 that this would be his last season #i couldn't imagine him switching back to another number #and i feel like that last season...honoring diogo...it just felt right to close this chapter of his life that way #and i think that's beautiful #diogo's been on my mind the past few days because i didn't expect ibou to include him in his farewell video #and not only once but several times because he's not going to stop talking or thinking about diogo #he's going to remember him because that's the way to keep him alive #and that both broke me and comforted me because there he was still vibrant and full of life and happiness

jamesmilnerofficial After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League's youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I've been on, right through to not being able to lift my foot last year and then coming back to be part of BHAFC qualifying for Europe for the second time in their history at the age of 40.

To have gone on to represent NUFC, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool FC and BHAFC — and not forgetting a memorable month at Swindon Town — has been an incredible privilege. Every club has played a huge role in my life and career, and I want to thank everyone involved - the owners, staff, coaches, teammates and supporters who welcomed me and helped me along the way.

I've been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country, England, at two European Championships and two World Cups. But more than anything, it's the people and friendships I've made throughout the game that I'II cherish forever.

To the fans, thank you. To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you'll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too - you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person.

To my family, thank you for every sacrifice, every mile travelled and every moment of encouragement. None of this would have been possible without you.

I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.
