The Problem With the True Canon

The obsession with the “real” story behind fictional universes—like those of Marvel or Star Wars—makes fan communities toxic for everyone.

This is a must read article, Olicity fans.  I touched on some of the themes in a recent post, but this is such a fabulous, timely article.  Please take the time to read it. 

Once you have, take a good long look at your social media involvement and start reassessing who you’re allowing access to you, what’s negatively impacting your enjoyment of your shows (including Arrow), ruthlessly take charge of it (mute, block, etc), and give yourself permission to be a fan of what you like, whatever you like, without needing to explain it or defend it to anyone.  I just wanna have fun!

There’s only one problem with true canon: It doesn’t exist. And in an effort to hold people to it, enthusiasts strangle criticism, hamstring creators, and make fan communities far more toxic for everybody. 

Worse, these pieces [easter eggs] often implicitly hold up source canon—and loyalty to it—as the only thing that matters.

Which leads directly to the near pathological hatred for outside opinion in fan communities. Fans might complain bitterly about adaptations they consider flawed, but many get really angry about criticism of ones they consider canonically faithful. … This reaction also has historical roots: The social dynamics of science fiction, fantasy, and comics fandom have historically made them into ferociously policed boys clubs, with perceived outsiders—often women—subjected to spontaneous canonical inquisitions by the self-declared clergy.

The truth is that nobody—not the company, not the fans, not even the creator—can dictate the nature of a story to you. Batman v Superman is not canon. Neither is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, or the current Batman run, or the Star Wars novels, or even the films. The only true canon is personal, and it lives inside your head.

Olicity WIP Fic Recs!

@geniewithwifi asked me for some WIP fanfiction recs, and I figured I might as well share them all here for everyone! 

A Tempest in a Teacup by sbarmarj (Rated M) - a brilliant, enticing fic. When Felicity’s connection to the Bratva puts her in some unexpected danger, she’s rescued by her boss, Oliver Queen, and finds out he’s not the playboy he appears to be, but a Captain in the Bratva. I love the unexpected twists in this fic! The characters are so rich and vibrant! 

A Weekend in Vegas by BingeWriter (Rated E) - Takes place mid-season 1. Felicity and Oliver meet in Vegas and spend the night with each other. A new and riveting take on a possible first meeting, and the consequences as they fall back into the normal events of season 1. 

Against All Odds by @nikkibeckettcsm (Rated T) -  Eleanor Queen travels back in time in order to save her future. Join her as she tries not to ruin the past, most significantly her parent’s lives. Have I ever mentioned I have a HUGE weakness for time travel? This is EVERYTHING I ever needed it to be and I CANNOT wait for the next update! Every chapter so far has just been fantastic!

All About You by javajunkie (Rated T) - Married in Vegas AU. And the judge won’t let them get the marriage annulled: cue hijinks as Oliver and Felicity decide to let this mistake work to their advantage.

all the this waiting for the sky to fall by looney_lovegood (Rated T) - BIRDS OF PREY AU!! Need I say more?? It’s wonderful and phenomenal! And there’s only one chapter up so far! I can’t say enough about this, but why listen to me? Go! Read it and see for yourself!

Before the World Wakes by @foreverfelicityqueen and @holysmoaksoliver - Set about three years after the sinking of the Gambit. Tommy enlists the help of a spunky IT girl (yes, Felicity) to find his best friend, who he believes to still be alive. Flommy, intrigue, around-the-world chases! What’s not to love? (Not to mention my weakness for all Felicity/Tommy greatness)

Cupid’s Angel by @sandys18 - Felicity’s one of Cupid’s angels, and she’s not particularly good at her job. After another disastrous failure, Cupid turns her human to rectify her mistake and get Laurel Lance to fall in love with Oliver Queen. But once she meets Oliver and sparks fly, things change. A wonderful, epic roller coaster ride, full of laughs and love!

Death in the Family by  @angelqueen87 (Rated M) - Diverging from Arrow S2. Basically Felicity used to be a superhero in her own right, and when Ra’s Al Ghul threatens, she leaves Starling, and her and her partners fake their deaths and disappear. But even if she’s “dead”, she’s not idle. I can’t even come up with words to describe how incredible this is: just READ IT! Go! 

Decode by @thatmasquedgirl (Rated T) - Oliver’s on the run from, well, everyone, and Felicity needs some protection. Through coincidence they meet and discover they could really help each other. And why wouldn’t you read something by thatmasquedgirl? It’s apparently based off a movie (or something) I have never seen, but it’s wonderfully written and crafted for the Arrowverse.

Forever is Composed of Nows by @dust2dust34 and @so-caffeinated (Rated M) - What would you do if a speedster appeared in the Foundry and handed you your three year old daughter from the future? Straight from the mind of two spectacular writers, meet Ellie Queen! She might have landed in the middle of a dangerous time, but she still manages to change the lives of all the adults suddenly taking care of her. And everything changes. (Seriously, you guys, this is AMAZING!!!)

Did I mention I love time travel?

His Girl Wednesday by Bluebayou (Rated M) - Felicity rushes into Queen Consolidated five minutes late for an interview and they turn her away, but she still manages to walk out with a job…as assistant to Oliver Queen, an executive known for his tardiness and sleeping with his assistants. Can she get him back on track? It’s a fun adventure with laughter, shenanigans, and drama. 

How to Train Your Vigilante by @alexiablackbriar13 (Rated M) - HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON AU!!!! Read it!! Now! Go! It’s spectacular and fantastic and edge-of-your-seat amazing. (And I’m not just saying that because Toothless is my screensaver). Seriously, it combines HTTYD with Arrow and the result is phenomenal! Each new chapter makes my day! 

Mark of the Angel by @some1foundme (Rated T) - Soulmate/Angel AU, the one you never knew you wanted. It’s beautifully written and OH MY GOSH I CAN”T WAIT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! Check it out!

Never Forgotten by @sandy18 (Rated M) - Oliver stays in Nanda Parbat and becomes Al Sahim, forgetting everything that tied him to Oliver Queen, but a faceless woman keeps haunting his dreams. Then a familiar blonde arrives demanding protection, and he starts to question himself. Heartfelt, and suspenseful, this is definitely worth the read!

The Darkness Within by @geniewithwifi (Rated T) - Beauty and the Beast AU! I’m a sucker for fairy tales and this enrapturing creation is no different! I don’t want to give a lot away, but it’s a gem!

The Offer by mogirl97 (Rated M) - Framed for a murder she didn’t commit, Felicity makes a deal with a certain vigilante to help him save the city and uncover her boyfriend’s real killer.  Sexual tension abounds and the words keep you glued to the page! Go! Read!

You Have (Not) Failed This ‘Verse by @so-caffeinated (Rated E) - So I mostly kept crossovers off this list, but I couldn’t resist: Firefly meets Arrow, and I could not be more happy about the results! It’s sublime! 

Et voila! There are more fics I’m reading, but these are the ones I’m most excited about! I hope you find something new and HAPPY READING!!
