It was hard for Krux to understand the world around him. He always longed for a home he never had and he always felt the urge to run away. To run as far as possible. No destination in mind. It's hard to see the future when your worth is defined by your ability to bring back the rotten past.

Forty years is a long time. The weather is warmer, the water is dirtier, the city is louder and the people are more tired and angry. And the old lady who worked at the local store is gone.

They keep inventing. But this is not about progress, this is about money. Invent a beautiful future and sell it, disregard the past and call it obsolete.

Krux spent forty years thinking about his twenty year old brother while turning into an old man. But he loved aging, it meant running away from the reflection in the mirror. The one that looked all too familiar.

Acronix was still a kid. Less hours spent in pain and less tears shed. Less knowledge but also less burdens that weighted on him.

Because his abilities only allowed him to pause and reverse the flow of time, Krux could never imagine the future. He only saw glimpses of it and felt some sort of twisted hope when he was with Acronix.

Acronix could only remember the past when he was close to Krux. He was always in a rush. Thinking about the next exciting thing to do. Afraid to stop, as if stopping for a moment meant instant death.

Krux's eyes had no glow to them. As if his vision was turned inwards, to his memories, as if he was rewinding a VHS tape. Over and over again.

Acronix's eyes seemed to glow. It seemed like there were ripples in them. As if he was switching between channels, trying to see all the possible futures. Not that he needed to, he was fine with any future where he was with his brother.

Krux could not recognize the very person who haunted his dreams for decades. He knew it would happen. He knew that every time you revisit a memory you taint it. He knew it too well. The version of Acronix that he missed all those years never really existed.

Acronix couldn't figure out what to think about the man who stood before him. He was in a hurry to see his brother. The one who always reminded him who he was and where he belonged. But this stranger looked like he didn't know anything about him. He was a collection of artifacts that were covered in centuries old dust. He relived their past in his head so many times, rewinded the tape so often it was no longer playable.

Remember swimming in the lake? Remember how I burned my hand? Remember that story our mom used to read to us before bed? Do you remember mom?

You cannot get those years back. The past doesn't exist. But neither does the future.
