Emmet and Elle do not follow traditional gender roles. They split chores, both have high paying jobs, and both put equal effort into their relationship.
Elle does most of the buying. She likes to spoil Emmet with new clothes or necessities, or just anything he likes. Emmet doesn't mind because Elle loves shopping and has great taste.
Elle will also always carry the shopping bags or basket when she’s with Emmet. She wants shopping to be as fun as possible for him and wants to do all the hard work. Once Elle is unable to lift a bag from the weight of it then that's the cue for Emmet to help her carry.
Emmet does pay for dinner though. He insists, and he’ll even save up money to take Elle somewhere fancy for a special occasion. Getting food paid for her is a quick way into Elle’s heart.
They info dump about their interests after work. Elle loves sharing her interest in fashion, or even stuff that happened during the week. I headcanon Emmet as a history nerd and yaps about the books he's been reading.
Elle and Emmet share a love of Redbull, even before they met. When Emmet saw the stack of Redbull cans in Elle’s room, he knew that they had some kind of connection.

Elle’s love languages are gift giving and physical touch.
Elle is obviously a big gift giver. She likes to surprise Emmet with energy drinks and other stuff mentioned.
Elle is constantly touching Emmet, whether it’s holding his hand, jokingly poking him, or touching up his outfit. Even before dating, it took others telling her for Elle to notice how much she touched him.
(Emmet doesn’t mind either of them one bit. He loves being pampered but would rather die than admit to it.)
Emmet’s love language is words of affirmation
He’s just like. The most supportive boyfriend in the world and constantly reminds Elle how amazing she is.
Elle's brain short-circuits whenever she gets a compliment and tries very hard to play it cool.
Emmet becomes a better gift giver as their relationship develops. It's to the point where intsead of 2-in-one shampoo, he knows what jewelry goes with her outfits and color scheme.
I like to imagine that for their first kiss, Elle asked to kiss him and Emmet was so flustered that all he could do was nod yes.

And I also witnessed Christian Borle doing that. I mean, he is the 'idea here', 'idea there', 'let's change this line to that', constantly at the creative team's table with ideas. And I saw that happen and I was like, 'I can do that too!' And he and I really worked very hard together to build in where these two people become friends, where these two fall in love, because it wasn't really in the script at first, so we really had to fight for that. So, I was scrolling through TikTok and then I was reminded of this passage in journal 3 where Ford says that he keeps a picture of Nikolas tesla in his desk, and I thought "What if Bill got jealous of it and decided to switch it for one of himself?"
