recent epidemic of adaptations that take lots of liberties with the source material and also, separately, are bad. but then if you say "this is bad" you get hit with "you're just being a source material purist and you don't understand the vision"...like. well actually I think it rules when people do new and different things with classic works. I just think these particular new and different things suck ass.

Marius's problem with Armand in the books is not that he ever got too old and it's not even really that he was taken by the cult and it's not even really his various religious convictions. Marius is happy to encourage Armand's religious persuasions when they benefit him ("He took my outstretched hand and bent my finger to point to a tiny winged infant etched in glittering beads on a worn square cushion that lay beside us. "Amadeo," he said, "beloved of the God of love.") but when they signify Armand's independence of thought or his connection to someone other than Marius, they are childishness or delusion or zealotry

I think it's possible that Marius might have stepped in if he saw Armand subjugated by the Children of Darkness. but he doesn't- he sees Armand having already taken his place as a coven master. when Marius sees Armand in Paris he says:

How firm, how clear was his voice. How certain he was of what he said. How quick he was to correct any Child of Satan who had not slain mortals ruthlessly. It was a man's voice I heard coming from the lips of the boy I once knew. It was chilling to me.

Marius decides as soon as he hears Andrei's mind in the brothel that this child will be his empty vessel. he is, by his own retelling, almost immediately proven wrong, almost immediately confronted with the fact that this is a real person with his own thoughts and feelings and desires and beliefs. and yet Marius spends the rest of that damn book series deliberately closing his eyes to this reality, and once he can no longer pretend to be dead, takes every opportunity he can to assert his control over Armand, prevent Armand from speaking or discredit or outright punish him when he does, and ensure- by violence when necessary- that Armand never has anything Marius hasn't touched.

At this point it feels like genuinely the only thing holding this show together to the point that it makes a modicum of sense is the actors having a deep understanding of their own characters and an inner narrative that they are fighting for their fucking lives to incorporate into their acting choices

Assad Zaman: There’s something about Armand when he’s not being observed that I took [from the books]. I think if you know the books you know that he’s… the specific alien quality about… when you’re in stasis, you’re almost on standby. Statuesque. You’re unable to emote or think anything because everything you do is shaped on either being obsessed with someone, manipulating someone, or trying to survive your trauma in someway. What do those people do when they’re not being observed? The way Anne Rice describes Armand, several times, is sort of this ethereal, alien quality that doesn’t quite feel like it’s… She called it childish, but I don’t see it as childish. I see it more as like an alien that’s unable to understand himself, his own needs[?], only able to play a part. So when there’s no one to see them, they kind of just go a little bit dead, soulless, that kind of thing. That’s something that I took on, tried to.

I dont really care if this headcanon is projecting, but I really truly feel like Armand is dissociated 24/7. The reason he can never seem honest when apologizing for things or why he doesnt even really realize hes the one getting himself into/causing so many shit situations is because hes so disconnected from himself and nothing really feels like its really happening to him. It would make even more sense since hes constantly made to relive his trauma with literally everyone around him bringing it up every five seconds to remind him he was a child sex slave. And because everyone loves sending Armand lovers to the guillotine no im not exusing the stuff hes done copy paste this is just an idea of WHY he keeps acting in the ways he does
