Summary : your husband tried to give you the best anniversary, but work gets in the way of nearly everything, including this. Not proofread!!
Three months. That's how long it'd been since you and your husband, hiromi, did anything together. He's been busy before, but never like this. In the past, you two could at least share the mundane moments of life together but now there was barely any trace of him at home.
Gone were the sweet morning kisses, and shared cups of coffee. Nowadays, his presence could only be found in the lingering scent of his cologne and the case papers strewn about the house.
To say the least, you were tired but more paranoid than anything. Had he grown tired of you? Is there someone else? Is this what people meant when they said the honeymoon phase will end? Each day that passed in these past two months was like your own personal hell.
The first few weeks were fine, but then you started seeing signs, purchases for flowers you never got, expensive gifts, having to cancel plans for overtime and the final nail in the coffin, missing your anniversary.
The dinner table was adorned with candles, cutlery neatly laid out and a myriad of cusines, albeit they were now cold from how long they'd been sitting out. You sat in the chair across from the one you'd set out for Hiromi, hands tightly clasped in your lap, wrinkling the ethereal dress you'd worn just for him.
Your hands kept reaching for your phone, refreshing the screen over and over again in hopes that he'd text you, that he'd remember, that he'd care. Hours passed by with you sitting there in silence and not a single word from him.
By the time the clock had struck 12:00 a.m., you'd lost any hope of him coming home tonight. A large lump had formed in your throat, tears clouding your vision and eventually staining your cheeks as you got unready, slipping into something more comfortable and falling asleep in your shared bed, now cold without him.
Hiromi staggered through the front door at around 2:00 a.m., flowers in hand as well as bags from different stores, all the things he'd been hiding just to surprise you on your anniversary, exhaustion weighing him down, his eye bags darker than they were that morning, his briefcase, coat and shoes haphazardly tossed on the floor. The sweet scent of candles hit him instantly, pulling his gaze to the decorated dinner table, then their bedroom door, tightly shut.
“damn it..” He whispered to himself, his voice hoarse, dropping all the bags with the bouquet, running a rough hand through his hair, messing up his perfect slicked-back hair. He stepped inside the bedroom cautiously, the sight of your sleeping, defeated form hidden under the covers breaking his heart.
He crouched down next to you, placing a comforting hand on your cheek, his thumb gently brushing under your eye, wiping away any lingering tears. He sighed, knowing how badly he'd messed up and yet feeling so powerless as to how he could make it up to you.
Hiromi didn't sleep for the rest of the night despite how tired he was- he couldn't, not when he was the reason you'd been so upset. With a heavy hand resting on your waist as you slept, soothing you, he took the next few days off work, uncaring about the consequences, and immediately made a reservation at your favourite restaurant, planning a whole day of things be knew you'd love, all to see his precious girl happy again.

★ Synopsis : finding out your husband isn't coming back home to you.
There was something off about today, you’d woken with this unshakeable, heavy feeling in your chest, sluggish and somehow anxious at the same time right from the moment you opened your eyes. You’d rolled over in bed, the lilac sheets tangled around you, expecting to find your husband, Kento, but getting cold pillows and disappointment in return. You pulled yourself up with a groan, rubbing your eyes as your feet dragged along the hardwood floors, walking into the bathroom, finding him standing there, the same stoic expression on his face, wearing the exact blue shirt you’d come to despise, reminding you of his responsibilities, of how he has to put his life in danger to keep everyone else safe.
He catches you staring at him, stepping away from the mirror to face you instead, a softness washing over his face, one he’d reserved for you. His voice came out low, hushed, almost inaudible, casting a warmth within you despite the morning chill.
“Everything alright?” His hands came to rest on your cheeks, the warmth radiating from him providing a fleeting sense of comfort, his eyes catching the solemn expression that had made its way onto your face without you even realising it. You pull away with a noncommittal shake of your head, wrapping your arms around yourself as you made your way to the kitchen to pack his lunch for the day, trying desperately to shake away the feeling of dread washing over you in waves.
Your hands moved almost robotically, yet they still shook for reasons unknown to you. In this daze of seemingly unexplainable worry you’d been drowning yourself in, you failed to notice how your lover was already putting his shoes on, ready to head out the door, his briefcase in hand. You spun around, rushing to wish him goodbye. Your heart gave a sharp tug, as if warning you. Letting him go felt wrong, abnormal, almost dangerous. Nevertheless you couldn’t bring yourself to speak up, a thick lump forming in your throat as you watched him quietly.
Kento glanced back at you, worry clear on his face, worried about you. One of his hands came up to cup your cheek, you eyes catching the faint glint of his wedding band. His mumbled reassurances went unheard by you, too consumed by your own panic, only snapping back to reality when he pulled away, stepping out the front door, leaving you standing there in the deafening silence of your home. You turned around, making your way to the living room, your eyes drifting over to the kitchen, realising he’d forgotten his lunchbox, wrapped in a soft, cherry blossom pink cloth, one you’d picked out just for him.
The entire day passed in a blur. The clock on the coffee table read 12:24 a.m, the TV casting a warm orange glow over the otherwise dark house. It wasn’t abnormal for Kento to be late considering his job, but something about tonight felt wrong. You’d tried calling him but it went straight to voicemail. An overwhelming sense of fear filled you, leaving you frozen on the beige loveseat usually shared by the both of you on movie nights.
1:18 a.m. That’s when you got the call. Half asleep and delirious against the cushions, your eyes catching the caller ID flashing across the screen, Yuji. Even before you picked up, you already knew. His voice was shaky, terrified, alone. The poor kid, the thought was pushed to the back of your mind as what he said next crushed you. The words he spoke were muffled to your ears, a heavy loneliness settling over you, your husband was gone. No remains of him left behind for you to mourn over, nothing to bury, nothing to reconstruct.
The sharp click of you hanging up echoes throughout the silent, cold home house. Sitting there hunched over, you couldn’t bring yourself to move, to inform his family, to inform yours, you could only sit there as tears escaped your eyes, quickly followed by gut wrenching sobs, your hands dug into the pillows until your knuckles turned white, keeling over from the unbearable amount of anguish you felt. You stood up on shaky legs, trying to make your way to the bedroom, your eyes falling on the calendar hanging on the wall, Thursday circled in red marker- your anniversary. As your gaze shifted, you noticed the lunchbox in the kitchen, wrapped in the same cherry blossom pink cloth that seemed to be mocking you now, one that was meant to be his.
You collapsed to your knees right there with a soft thud, hyperventilating. Every little mundane thing reminding you of him. Your throat growing hoarse from the sheer force of your cries, your nails digging into your sides, the chill of the night seeping deep into your bones, with no one to hold you, to comfort you, with no Kento.
