I just wanted to ask what your thoughts on serpico/farnese's relationship from berserk are?
it’s surprising that someone suddenly comes to me with a Berserk question, taking in mind that i haven’t done any fanart for a while, but that’s ok. I’m going to assume you know what’s my posture about incest, so just in case I’ll just go ahead and say that it’s not something I condone and I generally hate it when it’s fetishized (particularly when it’s abusive), but I admit that I don’t have a say when such relationships happen in real life between consenting adults even if they’re extremely rare. I don’t approve it, but I can’t do anything about it, and if external people wish to get off from that, that’s going to be their own damn problem.
When it comes to fictional works, you are able to safely explore these taboos, and I personally find incestuous relationships fascinating if they’re written right, and I can appreciate good quality in writing even for things I’m not particularly fond of.
Now, to Farnese and Serpico, I did find this pair very fascinating as far as fucked up relationships go; the flashbacks show some sort of parallels with the initial relationship between Guts and Griffith (‘I took you in, now you belong to me’ kind of deal if I remember correctly), but they turned out to be a very unbalanced servant-master relationship in which Serpico put up with Farnese’s childish cruelty caused by her loneliness and the negligence of her parents, and even after all her was put through he understood Farnese. Now, despite he realized that he was Farnese’s half-brother, their relationship developed into more something more intimate while Farnese was unaware of this truth and perhaps Serpico knew that this was for the best.
The thing is that Serpico is obviously in love with Farnese, but I believe he also lives on with that guilt and frustration, not only for being her half-brother but also because despite caring so profoundly for each other, Serpico couldn’t help Farnese out of the toxic world she built around herself and he can’t do much or can’t allow himself to do much.
Well, I somehow turned my opinion on them into a small essay, but I think that if I have to pick one well-written incestous relationship, that’d be the relationship Farnese with Serpico.
