mothHERs day
Last night I went to the movies to see a good friend star in the new film Mothers Day Out. A hilarious and rather real picture of what it FEELS like to be a mother, I laughed and cried and laughed again. Going to the movies is a rare occasion for me these days. Entwined in the love and building of my 1 year old son I don't find time to go to movies much. I don't find time to do much of anything for myself actually, including continuing this poetry blog. But here I am, sitting, rather guiltily, in front of my computer taking 5 minutes for myself while my husband is in the yard with the baby. I'm here not because I want to be, but because my husband sat me here, and said "Happy Mothers Day. You have to write a poem." He knows I need it. He knows it more than I do. I, left to my own devices, will stick with my son 24 hours a day, serving and caring and loving and wiping and feeding and clapping and singing and kissing away tears and being and ohmygod I gotta get a minute to myself!!! MOTHERHOOD is the most consuming, life changing, beautiful, heart expanding, difficult thing I have ever done. It is more than a full time job. Even sitting here to write a poem I cannot stop thinking about my job as a mother. 24 hours a day and then some. Today I commend all mothers. To every mother who ever cried herself to sleep because the day was just so much and she did the best she could and then some and she still felt like a failure: YOU ARE AMAZING. YOU ARE DOING IT. AND THAT IS A MIRACLE IN ITSELF. I know I am so far from perfect. I cannot do this mommy thing alone. It is only through constant, and I do mean CONSTANT, daily prayer for patience and peace and whatever else I may need that day, and the grace of God that I parent even close to the way I'd like to parent.
Each new day brings its challenges, and the sun comes up, and it shines in our faces as we greet the day, and we suit up and show up and do the best we can. WE ARE MOTHERS, AND WE ARE AWESOME.
