My beautiful Dalai Lama passed away one year ago today. We adventured together for 18 years. She was silly, playful, loving, adventurous, kind, snuggly, loyal, curious, confident, and so, so soft. She was the prettiest cat I’ve ever seen. She loved Christmas and opening presents. She loved morning and evening snuggles. She loved bathing in the sun and playing. She was so extremely playful well into old age. I always say I had a kitten who suddenly turned into an old cat. She did not love most kitty treats. Very selective with the treats. She sat in my suitcase when I had to go on vacation or to see the family. She sat on my book when I tried to read and she wanted my attention. She sat on my lap for hours on end and gave me the best purrs in the world. She was with me as I learned how to be an adult in the world. Those who knew her knew she loved to be at the center of the party. We traveled together from Chicago to Colorado to Los Angeles and we took many road trips to Colorado to see the family. She was Dalai the Amazing Adventure Cat. She loved me as much as I loved her. If there was ever a purrfect kitty companion for me, it was she. I wished she could live forever and we could spend our whole lives together. I never needed or wanted another cat. Just her. She was perfect. My sweet angel baby. But that is the tragedy of loving these little furs babies. Their lives are short. Saying goodbye to her was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I miss her so much. But I’ve stopped crying every day, and even every week. Now it’s usually just a few times a month. Except this month. It’s been a lot. I believe she met my little Luci on the other side and sent her to be with me to make sure I’d be ok. Maybe Dalai’s spirit came back as Luci. I certainly feel her through Luci and Luci chose me hard and wouldn’t let go. Dalai helped me through a lot of hard times with her purrs and cuddles and sweetness. She even helped me through her passing. So, I’ll be ok. I miss you, my Dalai Dal. And I thank you for always looking out for me as my faithful companion and fur baby. #52hikechallenge Hike 23 was an evening cruise around Silver Lake Reservoir with @marpasq, Beatrice and Roxy! We had good times and those hills getting to and from the res are always a little extra when your pushing a stroller with the kiddos or carrying one on your back. #52HikeChallenge hike 22, a wonderful hike through Lynn Canyon Park in Vancouver with @martacp28! We had such fun exploring the beautiful forest and finding wee pine cones, chilin by the river, swimming in the river (very cold in case you were wondering), crossing the bridges (including a suspension bridge) and finding wee baby duckies as we walked around Rice Lake. What a beautiful day! I think we hiked about 6 or 7 miles in total. Writing excerpts from on of my 5th grade classes. We are creating an original devised theatre piece with poetry and movement based on the topics that they brought up in our "council light" story sharing circle: travel and how the world opens up as you travel and families being separated by ICE and the effects of DTs immigration policies. My heart is cracked wide open. My hope is that through this, these kids can process some of what they are seeing and realize that art is an immensely powerful tool to push back against injustice and change culture. Cultural change leads to policy change. There is a reason dictators always come after the artists. My job this week (since we don't have class) is to turn their writing into the first draft of a script. Many tears are flowing on this one. It's official! Thank you Sarah Ezrin and Amy Rose Stably for such a wonderful journey during teacher training and beyond. When I walked into the information session on teacher training, I was about 50/50 whether or not I would do it. After meeting Sarah, I knew she was my teacher so I signed up. Beautiful, full day today facilitating a Personal Influences training for Playworks with my beautiful friend and creative partner, Gilbert Salazar @unmaskedgs, followed by playwriting workshop at Vaughn with another beautiful friend and creative partner, Maria Pasquarelli. The mask is a collaboration between Gilbert and I. We had masks for all participants, but didn't have one left over for me. So he offered that we could share a mask, each using half to create on. Later he offered that maybe we could put something on each other's half relating to an identity we saw in the other. He drew me an antelope. She did not consent.
