Writing excerpts from on of my 5th grade classes. We are creating an original devised theatre piece with poetry and movement based on the topics that they brought up in our "council light" story sharing circle: travel and how the world opens up as you travel and families being separated by ICE and the effects of DTs immigration policies. My heart is cracked wide open. My hope is that through this, these kids can process some of what they are seeing and realize that art is an immensely powerful tool to push back against injustice and change culture. Cultural change leads to policy change. There is a reason dictators always come after the artists. My job this week (since we don't have class) is to turn their writing into the first draft of a script. Many tears are flowing on this one.
