Local Lens: Hidden Streets of Cluj-Napoca

“The modern era keeps us in a very alert rhythm, but sometimes we have to remind ourselves to slow down and admire what is around us. It’s such a pity to miss all those special moments,” says Mihail Onaca (@mihailonaca), who moved to Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from the northern part of the country to pursue acting. Mihail is inspired by the baroque architecture of the vibrant city, which is the historic capital of Transylvania. “I hope to make people aware of the diverse beauty around us. Large squares, narrow streets, inner courtyards, hallways, hidden places – all of these can contain something special for the eye.”
With a large population of students and young people, Cluj has a vibrant café culture, and is also home to the Transylvania International Film Festival. But some of Mihail’s favorite places to capture include the city’s large squares, including Piata Unirii and Piata Mihai Viteazu, and he likes to show how the open spaces contrast the distinctive cobblestone streets in the old town. Unirii and Mihai Viteazu squares – “The main squares are places where the architectural beauty is most astonishing, where one can breathe after walking around the many narrow streets in town.”
Cetatuia Hill — “Cetatuia Hill offers a great panorama and is an ideal place for walks and romantic sunsets.”
Around Muzeului Square (Museum’s Square) — “Old streets photos can be taken anywhere around Muzeului Square.”
