FACT: Arizona liberals DO EXIST.
I'm an Arizona Liberal and I'm frankly sick of feeling like I should apologize for it. With the exception of my Canadian Father and American born brother most everyone in my family is a Limbaugh listening, Fox News Regurgitating conservative republican.
I happen to be a white male raised in the Affluent Paradise Valley area, and up until highschool I didn't know it but I was a republican talking point machine. Listening to Dr. Laura and Rush Limbaugh in the car with mom and then NPR in the car with Dad I never really knew what side of the spectrum I fell on. I always Identified with democrats because in my mind they were the party of the people, but the personal responsibility aspect of conservatism has always been a draw for me as well.
My Mother in unapologetically Conservative but not in the bible thumping, gay hating way we often characterize. She was on the side of Chic-Fil-a not because she's against homosexuality (far from it) but because she say that we should respect the personal views of the CEO. I won't get into a debate about chic-fil-a mostly because it will never accomplish anything..ever...so shut up.
My Father on the other hand is Canadian, because of this fact he is a default liberal on most issues especially things like gun control. My father is part of the reason for this post and the subsequent posts I'll be sending out, because he unlike my mother, doesn't like to proclaim his liberalism. I'm not sure why he stays so quite on this but I believe its has to do with him being Canadian and thinking his opinion isn't valid. When you do get him going my father is a fire breathing liberal, if he could, he would confiscate your Ferrari, castrate you for buying such an ostentatious and flashy toy.
So where do I fall? How is it that with such a divided upbringing I choose to identify myself as a democrat? I'll tell you that and much more in my next installment of "I'm an Arizona Liberal, please don't shoot."
