Two films from two very different time periods reflect on the universal battle between love and hate in this film reference. One idea. Two movies. One film reference. Love and hate are in our hands. Through the right hand of love and the left hand of hate, we shape our worlds. Both films studied in this film reference article, The Night of the Hunter and Do the Right Thing, explore the symbolic duality of human consciousness, from biblical texts to modern reinterpretations. In Genesis, Cain strikes Abel with his left hand. That same symbolic divide extends from the right hand of God to pop-culture images of angels on our right shoulders and devils on our left. Love and hate. Giving and taking. Yin and yang. Dark and light. It is one of storytelling and filmmaking’s most powerful themes.

This film reference study explores a connective thread of inspiration between two iconic cinematic interpretations of good and evil. Across two different eras, both monumental films comment on mankind’s ongoing Love/Hate battle.

Character Study: ‘DJANGO’ Played by Jamie Foxx

DJANGO UNCHAINED {2012}

The character Django is a multifaceted and deeply developed figure, embodying themes of freedom, revenge, and transformation. He is portrayed as a former slave turned bounty hunter, skilled and rapidly growing in his abilities. Django's primary motivation in the film is the desire to free his wife, Broomhilda, and restore their love.

The film has been described as a 'spaghetti western' and a 'Blaxploitation film', notable for its use of violence and the unusual choice of a black hero in a genre typically dominated by white characters. Djangois a complex character whose journey from bondage to freedom is intricately woven with themes of revenge, moral ambiguity, and personal growth. The film presents a unique interpretation of the Hero's Journey, see Joseph Campbell1. Layers of social commentary explore themes of freedom, revenge, and self-determination. Django's transformation is both a personal journey and a symbolic representation of the struggle against oppression.

Character Study ‘The Haywood Family’ NOPE {2022}

Otis Jr. (OJ) and his sister Emerald are the main protagonists. OJ, takes over the family business after their father's death. Emerald, more outgoing and ambitious, seeks opportunities beyond the family's traditional role in Hollywood. Their contrasting personalities and approaches to the family legacy add depth to their characters and the story.

The Haywoods’ story intersects with the film's broader themes of exploitation and the human obsession with spectacle. Especially when it comes to the African American experience. Their attempt to film the UFO parallels historical exploitation in Hollywood, especially relevant given their family's past. The resolution of the Haywood family's storyline ties back into the film's themes of spectacle, legacy, and the human spirit's resilience. Their encounter with the UFO serves as a catalyst for confronting their family's past and deciding their future path, both as individuals and as a family unit.

Character Study

‘Bart’ played by Cleavon Little Blazing Saddles (1974) Cleavon Little portrayed a groundbreaking and positive representation of a Black hero in a Western comedy. Bart's character is celebrated for its role in challenging racial stereotypes in cinema. Today, the film and its characters are regarded as important cultural landmarks in the history of American comedy and satire. Bart, played by Cleavon Little is the film's protagonist and the first Black sheriff in the fictional town of Rock Ridge. He is intelligent, quick-witted, and calm under pressure. Despite facing racism and prejudice from some of the townsfolk, Bart uses his wit and charm to win over the community and ultimately bring law and order to the chaotic town. His character serves as a symbol of resilience and progress in the face of bigotry, making him a central figure in the satirical Western comedy.
