Writing Challenge 7 | Pizza
Kate pulled up at the curb outside Clint’s apartment building, looking up to see the window dark. “Where the hell are you now Barton?” She muttered, getting out, locking the car behind her. She’d seen the disasters with the mansion, with SHIELD and with Stark Tower on the news, had been out of state at the time on vacation.
She had given up on that completely and had got behind the wheel, driving back to New York once again. It had been hours. She’d kept the radio on in the car, soundly cursing super villains, super heroes, Avengers, and everyone in between as she went, keeping a few special epithets to one side for Clint, pushing down the worry that she felt.
"You’d best be in one piece." She muttered as she stomped up the stairs to his apartment. "Or at least as much as you ever are." She amended, using her key to let herself in. Vaguely she wondered if he actually realised she had a key, then decided that really it didn’t matter worth a damn. She flicked on the lights, hearing the unmistakeable soft whine of Lucky as he got up and wandered over to her, thrusting his nose into her hand.
She smiled, ruffling behind his ears. “Take it he’s not here then.” She said, scanning the apartment in front of her. Not exactly in the best of states but then, it had been a bit of a tense time. She glanced at the clock, deciding that it probably wouldn’t be that long before he was back.
With another pat to Lucky’s head she wandered into the kitchen, scouting through the fridge, finding a beer and some leftover pizza. She sniffed at it, wrinkling her nose, deciding that it was probably still edible. Or at least it didn’t have anything growing on it. She shrugged and headed back across to the lounge, sprawling out on the sofa, biting into the pizza, flicking the TV on.
A soft laugh left her with a little huff as Lucky settled down beside the couch, ready for the pizza. She grinned, dangling the remainder of her slice over the edge for him. “Can’t leave you out can I?” She asked, picking herself another slice, digging in.
Talk [Reed invents a talking dog collar]
"Pizza?"
That was not his head voice. That was from the new collar Stretchy had put around his neck, complete with a special blinking... thingy on it with a speaker, that seemed to be able to make his voice like theirs. It was weird. But cool. Maybe more people would understand him now?
"Pizza!"
"Fascinating. I wondered if it would work -- of course it would, I mean, I've created more complex designs before, but it makes one wonder why no one else had done it before," the scientist hummed out thoughtfully, gently adjusting the collar so it sat more neatly and comfortably. "And this is just the first design; I could make it even more compact and it would still receive the right transistor data."
Lucky butted his head against Reed's arm, panting away happily. "Stretchy promised pizza," his collar proclaimed, voicing his thoughts above the low rumbling bark he gave. "I like Stretchy. You give me food and hugs and shiny things. Archer thinks you're good person too. Makes me like more if Archer likes!"
"Fascinating."
"Stretchy food!"
Reed laughed then, rubbing under Lucky's ears which had his hind leg twitch and thump against the floor. "Oh! That feels good," he rumbled. "My favourite thing."
"Yeah, well, I think I know all your favourite things without the collar, fuzzball," Reed laughed out, smooching the fine fur between Lucky's brow before standing. "C'mon, I did promise pizza, but I also recall saying something about--"
"BALL!"
Beach
Stick stick stick stick stick —- stick!!!
Stretchy threw great sticks, threw better than Archer (but never tell Archer that or he’ll get sad), so when the stick was lobbed over the sand Lucky was right after it at full speed, excitedly panting and loving the feeling of sand between his toes. Of course, the only downside to Stretchy throwing so well was that he threw really far, and Lucky only had one eye, so sometimes finding the stick was...
Difficult.
So Lucky decided that the huge hunk of driftwood he found was the perfect stick replacement.
"Oh my -- Lucky that thing is huge!" Reed laughed out as the labrador proudly trotted up dragging the huge chunk of salt-tinged wood. "I swear I didn't throw that. Or did I?"
Lucky gave him the equivalent of a shrug in dog, which involved tilting his head and grumbling out a bark, before dropping the chunk of wood at his feet with an excited yap, tail flicking up sand. Stretchy took the hint and stretched his arm around the piece of wood, wrapping around it a few times even, so he could heft it up to swing it --
Stick!
Splash! Into the water it went, and Lucky followed eagerly, only to be assailed by Reed diving in with him laughing all the while.
It was good to hear Stretchy laugh. That meant Stretchy was having fun too.

Gift: Your character or mine, surprising the other with a present
Ever since Glass Lady had arrived, Stretchy was much happier and even had started to work in the lab again instead of moping around all day, which was good, so Lucky decided that it was time to celebrate.
It was just finding a present to give Stretchy was hard. Stretchy wouldn't like stick, or ball, or Archer sock, or even chewy bone; maybe he could bring him pizza? Couldn't smell pizza anywhere in food place though. Would Stretchy like food today?
So many thoughts made Lucky's head hurt.
The labrador decided to roam the mansion to see if maybe he could find something, Sky Voice making sure that he could get through the doors okay as he rummaged around. Amidst his adventure Lucky found himself back at home, in Archer's place, and he sniffed and huffed and puffed as he searched around. Near the drawers, near the bathroom, near the bed--
Oh!
Right there, under the bed. Lucky stuffed his muzzle beneath it and nipped at the edge of the book he'd found, tugging until he'd safely pulled it free. Archer had been falling asleep with Curls a lot lately and hadn't been reading his book to go to sleep, so maybe Stretchy would like book. Archer had shared books with Stretchy before, after all.
Book safely in mouth, Lucky struck up a trot out of home and wandered the hallways down to the laboratory where Reed was tinkering away on something one handed.
<>
"Thanks Jarvis," the man chimed, putting down his tools to push his goggles up before turning and facing Lucky. "Oh-- hello!"
"Wrrrmnnph!"
Lucky plopped the book in Reed's lap and sat on his haunches, panting away happily.
"For me?" Reed queried warmly, wiping the dust jacket clean before admiring the book. Something called Watcher. Archer had read it before and was reading again before he got sick. Lucky liked it because it had a dog too when Archer read bits to him. "Hmm, fascinating. Maybe it's time for a break and a good read, hmm?"
Lucky raised his front paws and happily panted away, and Reed scruffed the long fur at the back of his neck.
"Good boy -- thank you."
Accept me
The place with the machine grease and robots was where Greasy always was.
Greasy had been ignoring Lucky for years around an hour now. No matter what Lucky tried it seemed that Greasy was determined to not look at him, or give him scratches, or even acknowledge whenever he put his head in his lap and whined up at him (save for pushing his head away) because Grease was very tired.
Looked just like Archer when tired; all sunken eyes. Silly people.
"Go away, go on. Git," Greasy growled out after a while. Ah! Finally! He speaks! "I thought your owner didn't let you down here."
<>
Greasy looked at the ceiling with a frown. "Jarvis, you betray me."
No, Sky Voice helps Lucky lots. Something the labrador excitedly rumbled and barked about, which had Greasy's head snap down so he could look at him. Look hard, with eyes cloudy, bit glassy.
Like sad.
Lucky whined and bowed his head, booping his damp nose against Greasy's knee.
"Great, now I'm having a crisis in front of a dog."
Lucky tilted his head and raised his ears curiously, before raising a paw which was gently pressed against his leg. When he wasn't swatted away this time he pushed a little more, both paws resting on Greasy's lap with Lucky leaning up and excitedly licking his cheek, tail starting to waggle happily against the floor.
Greasy grumbled, then smiled, then hugged Lucky which had the dog excitedly butting his head against him and nuzzling him back.
"Yeah, yeah. But don't tell anyone."
Bark!
Addressed to Lucky: Pizza.
‘Lucky, pizza!’
It didn’t take much to make Lucky’s ears perk up and his sole eye open, he had to keep a close eye on Archer after all and make sure he was okay so he slept lightly, but heeding the call for his most favourite food ever tended to make him wake up a lot faster than anything else.
Stretchy called for him again, and Lucky barked excitedly as he launched off of his sleeping spot by the sunlit window and eagerly trotted into the halls of the mansion, following the trail of salt and cheese and meat that he could smell leading into the kitchen.
"Ah— there you are, I knew you wouldn’t be far if I had one of these."
Lucky’s tail lashed from side to side eagerly, the dog almost dancing along the tiles in his excitement as he saw Stretchy holding a box of very good smelling pizza. Pizza needed to be in Lucky’s mouth right now. Pizza pizza pizza—
Squeak!
Stretchy laughed, the sound bright, a sound that made Lucky pant and smile and howl animatedly as he squished his paws up on Stretchy’s chest while trying to stand up tall enough to reach the box. But the box kept moving away! Stretchy cheated a lot when it came to sharing pizza. “Hey now, I need to eat some of this too; Clint’ll be mad if I let you eat all of it.”
Archer had fed him a whole box before. Archer wouldn’t mind. That response was spoken in barks and rumbling wuffles, clearly to Stretchy’s amusement.
"Yeah, well, if you promise to let me have a few slices too I’ll let you have more than just one."
Bark bark bark!!
Stretchy was best friend.
